Does having a page (or site) available on HTTP and HTTPS cause duplication issues?
-
Say I've got a site that can be accessed using either protocal (i.e. HTTP and HTTPS), but most (if not all of the links) are pointing to the HTTP versions. Will it cause a problem if I start link building to HTTPS versions?
In other words does google see http://mysite.com as the same page as https://mysite.com?
Thanks

Got it - saw your other question. This is definitely a bit tricky.

Thanks for answering Dr. Pete
The reason I want to build links to the https version is because I plan to redirect the non secure homepage to the secure one.
The home page captures some customer details, so I don't think it makes sense to have the non secure version available as well.
If that makes sense.

Present day, Google has no issue with crawling/indexing secure pages, but Naghirniac is right - they will be seen as duplicates. The canonical tag is probably your easiest solution.
The best canonical solution, though, is to use the same URL consistently. Out of curiosity, why are you building links to the secure versions?

Thanks Vizergy

Makes sense - thanks

I have heard many times over the years that Google does not crawl/index secure pages... however, when performing a inURL:https search in Google you will see that this is certainly NOT true; they not only crawl, they index. So, if it is being crawled and indexed I would say there is a very real chance that it could cause a Dup issue.
I would set up a canonical tag to be safe.

Yes, you will have a duplication issue. You can work with both, but you will need to use the rel cannonical.

Email and landing page duplicate content issue?
Hi Mozers, my question is, if there is a web based email that goes to subscribers, then if they click on a link it lands on a Wordpress page with very similar content, will Google penalize us for duplicate content? If so is the best workaround to make the email no index no follow? Thanks!

Car Dealership website - Duplicate Page Content Issues
Hi, I am currently working on a large car dealership website. I have just had a Moz crawl through and its flagging a lot of duplicate page content issues, these are mostly for used car pages. How can I get round this as the site stocks many of the same car, model, colour, age, millage etc. Only unique thing about them is the reg plate. How do I get past this duplicate issue if all the info is relatively the same? Anyone experienced this issue when working on a car dealership website? Thank you.

Crawl Diagnostics: Duplicate Content Issues
The Moz crawl diagnostic is showing that I have some duplicate content issues on my site. For the most part, these are variations of the same product that are listed individually (i.e size/color). What would be the best way to deal with this? Choose one variation of the product and add a canonical tag? Thanks

Duplicate Content Issues on Product Pages
Hi guys Just keen to gauge your opinion on a quandary that has been bugging me for a while now. I work on an ecommerce website that sells around 20,000 products. A lot of the product SKUs are exactly the same in terms of how they work and what they offer the customer. Often it is 1 variable that changes. For example, the product may be available in 200 different sizes and 2 colours (therefore 400 SKUs available to purchase). Theese SKUs have been uploaded to the website as individual entires so that the customer can purchase them, with the only difference between the listings likely to be key signifiers such as colour, size, price, part number etc. Moz has flagged these pages up as duplicate content. Now I have worked on websites long enough now to know that duplicate content is never good from an SEO perspective, but I am struggling to work out an effective way in which I can display such a large number of almost identical products without falling foul of the duplicate content issue. If you wouldnt mind sharing any ideas or approaches that have been taken by you guys that would be great!

Site not passing page authority....
Hi, This site powertoolworld.co.uk is not passing page authority. In fact every page shows no links unless it has a link from an external source. Originally this site blocked Roger from crawling it but that block was lifted over 6 months ago. I also ran a crawl test last night and it shows the same thing. PA of 1 and no links. I would like to point out that the problem seems to be the same for all sites on the same platform. Which points me in the direction of code. for example there is a display: none tag in the ccs which is used to style where the side bar links are. It's a Blue Park platform. What could be causing the problem? Thanks in advance. EDIT Turns out that blocking the ezooms crawler stopped it from being included.

H1 - site name or page title?
Hi all, I have always used h1 tags for the site name and then h2 tags for the page title, thus: Bob's Chunky Bacon Store Smoked Bacon Bacon bacon bacon bacon etc... My reasoning for this is I believe it is semantically correct. The h1 represents a book's title and the h2 the name of a chapter. I seem to have read, in a few places, that my h1 should be the page title: Bob's Chunky Bacon Store Smoked Bacon Bacon bacon bacon bacon etc... From a SEO view, which of these is the better approach? Thanks in advance for any input.
