Will having a subdomain cause referral traffic from the domain name?
-
Hi!
One of our clients has a site with the store on a subdomain: store.example.com. When we've set up goals for order confirmation pages, we often see most of the sources attributed to example.com. Is this because of the subdomain issue?
How would we correct it so that we would see as the referring source for the goal the site that sent to the root domain originally, and not the site that sent to the subdomain?
Thanks!

I can't speak for all analytics programs, but I can say that YES - with Google Analytics and Omniture, at least - clicks from the subdomain to the main domain will show up as referral traffic on a default installation.
However, there are ways around this. For instance:

Hi Dylan,
Thanks - that was very helpful. I sent the link off to the site webmaster, so hopefully that will be taken care of.

Hi,
Purely on personal experience (don't know if it applies universally) I think you are correct.
Our Australian site is site.com/order/ and has never had this problem. Our UK site is order.site.com and is the only site where we have noticed this occuring (i.e. sub-domain being treated as an entirely separate domain)
Google also ahs some good resources on this:

This also might be useful if you want to adjust the analytics code as opposed to the site structure

Thanks, Dylan. That's something to bear in mind if the client would be interested. But back to the original question: is this because store.example.com is a different subdomain? If it were example.com/store - would we be having this issue?
Thanks!

First touch tracking might assist in getting clearer analytics. We tested it in a similar situation and it did make things much clearer. Note that it isn't necessarily tracking the immediate referrer to the store or order page - but the first one.
Seomoz itself has a really good blog roundup on the process

Cheers

Has anyone else seen a large increase in Direct Traffic in Analytics since August 21 2017?
I work at an agency that has Google Analytics to many different sites. About half of them have seen a huge increase in their "Direct" traffic since August 21. Given the cross section of sites I am viewing, I don't think this issue just effects our clients. So has anyone else seen this issue? Any ideas on how to correct/filter?

Traffic Drop Observations: Google UI, Mobilegeddon
Our traffic has dropped 25% in the last 3 weeks while maintaining our keyword rankings. At first, we thought it was due to the simultaneous change in Google UI where they removed the separators between ads and organic results. However, now, we have also noticed that our user devices have gone from ~ 50% desktop/50% mobile to 20% desktop/80% mobile. Just food for thought ...

Why Pre roll Youtube video ads are being recorded into Organic Traffic?
Hi Mozzers, Last month, one of our clients(appliance and kitchen design) has started a video ad campaign on Youtube for a specific Appliance brand, since then I have noticed Organic traffic has been inflated. I was able to figure it out thanks to some keywords that we never ranked for. How is this possible? Google Analytics should at least be able to segment that into a Youtube Referral traffic.

Spike in 404 Errors from a redirecting domain
All, The non www version of a site I own redirects to the www version. Recently, WMT began showing a big spike in 404 errors (1,000+) on the non www version of the site. Site traffic is off about 15% since the spike in 404 errors. There was also a brief period about two weeks ago, where the site went down due to an issue with the code that has now been resolved. Any ideas how WMT is showing 404 errors on redirected pages? Thanks, John

SEO traffic had significantly dropped
I know this question has been asked before, but I'm hoping someone can address my specific issue. We recently did a complete redesign of our site and moved it over to a new server. The site was even "down" for about a week, where we had a static splash page. However since relaunching (it's not been over two weeks) we've seen a significant drop in search engine traffic. We are using Yoast for Wordpress. The site is The Tech Block. Could anyone see if there is something we're doing wrong? Thanks
