Dmoz.Org listings - how much more difficult can it be?
-
We have had a quality website for 12 years. We have good rankings and good PR.
But for some reason, I have never been able to get listed on Dmoz.org - it's like they're not even reviewing it. It's not like I got a rejection letter or anything, just a no response and we just can't seem to get listed there. It's almost like the editors for our category are just not responsive or just not around. Or maybe they're a competitor and don't want us listed?
Questions:
1. How important is it for an established site to get listed? I imagine that dmoz being an authority site, it would still be very helpful for rankings.
2. There are dmoz "submission services" - where they claim to list your site the proper way. They don't guarantee their service, since they obviously can't, and you have to pay either way. Does anyone recommend these services and anyone know of a particular one that is up & up?
Any help on getting listed would be appreciated!

Honestly, submit and forget it. You could wait months, and I don't know of any secret way. If you're following the DMOZ rules, then no submission service is really going to help. In many cases, there just aren't enough editors.
The other issue is that many new DMOZ links are on deep pages, some of which aren't even getting indexed. No indexation means no link-juice. See my blog post from last year:
http://www.seomoz.org/blog/wheres-the-love-dmoz
At the end of the day, it's just one link. It's nice to have, but your efforts are better spent elsewhere, IMO.

I think thats it's kind of ironic how long it takes to get listed in DMOZ..
I know lots and lots of people who havent been able to get listed in there... but then you look at some of the sites that are in there and they are complete garbage!

Hi Applesofgold, Please look at the below link:
Firstly you should know how to submit the site to the open source directory(ODP).
After that why it is so important i.e DMoz Listing?
I hope that you will found the solution.
-
I have submitted two other sites in the past well over a year ago and forgot about it, the third right now is just about the 5-6 month time period, so hopefully third time is a charm.
-
Firstly how long have you been waiting? You can expect waiting times of up to 6 months or more.
Secondly it’s possible a competitor is the editor for that directory but pretty unlikely, it more likely they have a big back log. Or they don't have an editor / active one for that section. You can always try and apply for the editor position yourself (although I've had no luck with this).
DMOZ can be a really powerful link, but it really depends on the section you are trying to get, and how many other listings are already there.
I would submit once and then forget about it and focus on content creation and other areas. Add yourself to BOTW and dir.yahoo.com.
Never hear of these “Submission services” but they sound like waste of money and time.

Sorry, I don't have an answer, but I would like to hear some input from people that might have knowledge of DMOZ.org. I too have been trying for a while on several sites, and can not get any into that directory. I also see plenty of competitors that have awful content and they were able to get listed, so I am not sure what needs to be done.

How can I find and fix my broken links
There are a number(110) links that SEOmoz has found to have 404 errors. I have been able to find and fix many of them but there are links that are coming from our home page that do not seem to exist. I cannot even find the links in our system in wordpress. Is there something obvious that I am missing? Is there a way to locate where the links are originating from?

Backlinks: What are they really and how can I create them.
I am relatively new to the SEO world, and I want to build backlinks linking to our main site. My preferred way to create backlinks is by adding them in my blog comments or forum responses. I am an active participant in a large number of blogs/forums related to our field and I would like to add relevant backlinks in the comments/answers I post. I originally thought that a backlink was just a link, but none of the links that I have added to blogs like that have been recognized as backlinks. https://www.dynaread.com/ Why is this so? I know now that good backlink would be something like: Dynaread is a science based dyslexia remediation program for older struggling readers. However I have no idea how to add this types of links to blog comments or forum pages where there is no link tool. Do I have to do something with HTML? Please explain briefly what a backlink really is and most importantly how I can create them. Thank you in advance for your help! Joy P.S if you have suggestions about some resources where I can learn more about the subject please let me know. I love to learn more.

Can indirect linking be valuable?
I have a client who is using a SEO company (Hubshout, delete name if necessary) to boost traffic to their website. They are doing this by publishing articles and submitting them to article directories, then they use their own sites/blogs (which are valueless, PR and MozRank of zero) to point to these articles and they say that this helps boost there rankings. How? They are not linking to the clients websites, creating artificial links from their own websites to article directories instead of the clients website. Are they trying to boost the value of the article or trying to boost their own websites? How does this help out the client? It is similar to three way linking but is not.
