How to Link build for our site
-
Hello,
A client of mine has a site that gives advice to people. It's moderately competitive. It's a content site.
Using Open Site explorer, I looked up competitor's top pages and backlinks, and there were things such as sites that were heavy on directories, sites heavily on editorial mension, sites on juicy topics that I don't want to cover, and the rest was pretty much junk.
Just so that you know, I only link build with quality websites that look strong, long term, have a nice design, are high quality, and are not a directory (with a few exceptions)
What's the standard way to link build with a site like this? We've got 7 articles of good content that is from me spending hours learning about the subject and using my skills as a life coach.
Right now I'm just adding quality content and social media. I am not a top expert in the field, but I'm learning as much as possible.
How do we link build?
-
I'd say that standard link building strategy for a content site is split between:
- Proactive: doing webmaster outreach by email and asking for people to share the content
- Passive: encourage people to share the content on their own (social sharing buttons being the easiest way to do that)
Depending on the value of the content (you'll have to be honest with yourself as to whether it's amazing content, or just decent content) you can have great results from proactive outreach to other site owners. Think of who would find the site valuable and start looking for sites like that. The best place to get started is by reading up on link building / outreach posts here on SEOMoz: http://www.seomoz.org/pages/search_results?q=outreach - Pay attention to email templates and how you might be able to use them for your own situation.
Competitive analysis is a great place to start, and there's nothing wrong with spending a little time on directories if it's a one and done thing. I wouldn't spend days on it but there are plenty of high quality directories, especially for specific niches. Don't be scared off without researching each directory first, here's a good article on testing their relative value: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/using-blekkos-seo-data-to-evaluate-web-directories-14678

SEOMOZ Crawling Our Site
Hi there, We get a report from SEOMOZ every week which shows our performance within search. I noticed for our website www.unifor.com.au that it looks through over 10,000 pages, however our website sells less than 500 products so not sure why or how so many pages are trawled? If someone could let me know that would be great. It uses up a lot of bandwidth doing each of these searches so if the amount of pages being trawled reduced it would definitely assist. Thanks, Geoff

Two different Domain Authorities for one site?
The "Domain Authority" of my site on the "Link Analysis" section of SEOmoz Pro (34) is different to what it is on Open Site Explorer (36) - how can this be? All I can think is that one hasn't been updated yet (I'm hoping the lower one!). Elucidation gratefully received! Alex

Open Site Explorer Backlink Numbers Wrong?
So, I have a new site that we are currently building links for, lots of hard work. Anyway, I was a bit shocked when I viewed my site through Open Site Explorer and found only 4 backlinks!!!!! Alexa.com, Majestic, and Google Webmaster Tools don't show the exact same numbers, but their figures are all MUCH higher, 4 to 566 for example. What gives Site is www.powerequipmentplus.com for those who want to look themselves. Thanks for your time and concern.

What analysis exists for Out Bound Links (OBL) from your site
Hi Maybe I am missing this but I can''t seem to see it. I am doing some analysis on a client's site and want to get a csv list of links from the client's site to external sites. So what I am looking for is a list of Out Bound Links (OBL) from the client's site. I want to run these past a black list / bad link neighborhood checking script I have. This would actually be a nice feature in SEO Moz Pro, unless it actually already does and I am just missing it or not setting filters correctly. Thanks Trevor

Why am I not seeing an increase in external followed links?
Ive been getting some really good links pointing to my domain as of lately, and they appear to be followed links. yet the number of external followed links shown in my seomoz tool bar does not want to budge! nor do these links show up in site explorer! Is there a delay in the toolbars response-time? or could it be something else? Thanks
