Adding .html To Wordpress Site
-
I am working on a team (my part is the SEO) where the developer added the .html extension to the permalinks. I don't understand why, on Wordpress, you would do this.
Is there any benefit, or penalty for it as an SEO standpoint?
I usually just set mine up %postname% as the permalink structure, but I am not the web design lead on this project.
I asked the designer why, but he seems to be reluctant to answer any of my emails about his work, (like he is above that or something).
Not wanting to make things worse, I dropped it and thought I would ask here since I saw a few posts in reference to it today in the forum.
Is there an advantage or disadvantage (either way) to using the .html extension on a Wordpress site?

There is no advanage, but there is disadvanatges.
There s the fact that now you have a 301 redirect to the new url. every 301 redirecte leaks link juice.
there is also the conversion factor, where you really want clear clean data, haveing the .html makes things look that little bit messy.
Most people rewite the other way for this reason, to get rid of the extentions.
Try uising the old url, does it work?
I dont use wopprdpress of develop in php, but php being a server side technology, the webserver will need to know that the page is php. So i assume what the dev has done is rewite the urls, so when .html is used, it rewrites to a url that the web server can understand. When you do a rewite you need to do a 301 redirect from the old url to the new url so that you dont get duplicate contnet, you can not have both redering the same content. UYou also need to change every internal link on the site so that they link directly to the new url, you dont want your internal links going thougth a 301 as they leak link juice, leaking link juice on internal links that you have full control over is an un-necessary waste.
See http://thatsit.com.au/seo/tutorials/friendly-urls-using-url-rewrites-with-iis
This is for Microsoft IIS serrver, but the concept is the same

My guess is either developer preference or lack of knowledge. Joomla is the same way. You can have domain.com/about or domain.com/about.html - both accomplish the same thing, one takes an extra step to do (adding the .HTML suffix.)
I guess if you are coming off of an old static HTML site and moving to a CMS, including the .html would allow you to keep the same URL structures much easier than setting up 100s of redirects.
-
Then I guess I would ask why? Why would you setup a wordpress (new installation) blog to have .html extension? You have to go out of your way, as the default is to not have it.
Just old school? If there is no benefit, I just wonder why I guess.... but not that it matters much.

Nope, either should be fine. The biggest thing to remember is if you change any URL structure, setup 301 redirects to go from the page's old URL to the new URL.

Duplicate pages on wordpress
I am doing SEO on a site which is running on WP. And it has all pages and categories duplicates on domain.com/site/ However, as it got crawled I saw that all domain.com/ pages have rel=canonical with main page tag (does it mean something?). Thing is I will fix permalinks structure and I think WP automatically redirects if it is changed from /?page_id= to /%category%/%postname%/ or /%postname%/ Isn't there something I miss? Second problems is a forum. After a crawl it found over 5k errors and over 5k warnings. Those are: Duplicate page content; Duplicate page title; Overly-Dynamic URLs; Missing Meta descr; Title Element too long. All those come from domain.com/forum/ (fortunately, there are no domain.com/site/forum duplicates). What could be an easy solution to this?

Adding Google + to SEOmoz
I wanted to add my google + signature to every post I make on SEOmoz and I think every user should do the same... Two reasons why... Google helps our existence so we should help theirs. If someone likes what I wrote or vice versa we should be able to follow each other in a simple click. In my opinion all blogs forum posts etc... should Lead to a user not a website, this will prevent spam and help people network. In other words blog spammers and forum spammers will be SOL (Which they all ready are lol).

Mobile site rank on Google S.E. instead of desktop site.
Hello, all SEOers~ Today, I would like to hear your opinion regarding on Mobile site and duplicate contents issue. I have a mobile version of our website that is hosted on a subdomain (m instead www). Site is targeting UK and Its essentially the same content, formatted differently. So every URL on www exists also at the "m" subdomain and is identical content. (there are some different contents, yet I could say about 90% or more contents are same) Recently I've noticed that search results are showing links to our mobile site instead of the desktop site. (Google UK) I have a sitemap.xml for both sites, the mobile sitemap defined as follows: I didn't block googlebot from mobile site and also didn't block googlebot-mobile from desktop site. I read and watched Google webmaster tool forum and related video from Matt Cutts. I found many opinion that there is possibility which cause duplicate contents issue and I should do one of followings. 1. Block googlebot from mobile site. 2. Use canonical Tag on mobile site which points to desktop site. 3. Create and develop different contents (needless to say...) Do you think duplicate contents issue caused my mobile site rank on S.E. instead of my desktop site? also Do you think those method will help to show my desktop site on S.E.? I was wondering that I have multi-country sites which is same site format as I mentioned above. However, my other country sites are totally doing fine on Google. Only difference that I found is my other country sites have different Title & Meta Tag comparing to desktop site, but my UK mobile site has same Title & Meta Tag comparing to desktop. Do you think this also has something to do with current problem? Please people~! Feel free to make some comments and share your opinion. Thanks for reading my long long explanation.

Too many links on my site
Hi there everybody, I am a total SEO newbie and i am burning with questions. I had my site crawled and found out that it contains too many links. The reason is that it is a site where I constantly write news and articles and each one of them is a new Joomla item, thus a new link. I actually thought lots of content is good for SEO. How am I supposed to reduce the link amount?

Problems with changing the page title on Wordpress Site...
The website is http://www.masterpieceinteriors.co.uk/ I'm not sure why the homepage title is reading 'masterpieces' in Google but looks fine here. There seem to be 2 versions of the homepage coming up in google - you can see them both by searching 'masterpieceinteriors' and then 'masterpiece interiors'. Some help would be hugely appreciated!
