Duplicate Page Title
-
Virtually all of my pages are coming up with a "Duplicate Page Title" error even though the page title are different. I assume this is down to the end of the page title having the company name. Is this the reason and is it a problem to have a page title like below...
"Page title description - Company Name"

Hi Justin
I have now resolved the duplicate page title as mentioned.
However I am still getting lots of "duplicate page content" errors on all my wordpress tags pages. Any idea's why and how to resolve this?
Thanks
Pete

Facepalm. Such a good call. Can't believe I didn't think of that.

It isn't possible to change from a root to a subdomain, the only way of doing this is to create a new campaign, you will however start from scratch on the historical data of rankings etc.
I would strongly recommend you keep the campaign set up as is and use 301's to resolve the duplicate issues, as if you don't you rankings are likely to be hurt by duplicate content.
I'm sure you are aware already, but if not, here is the info for setting up 301
For apache
http://www.isitebuild.com/301-redirect.htmFor Windows
http://thatsit.com.au/seo/tutorials/how-to-fix-canonical-domain-name-issuesAs I say, you really should fix this issue as opposed to working around it.

Thanks for the reply. Your right. I can't see the option in my settings to change from a root domain to a sub domain. Any idea's?

I assume here that you are referring to a "Duplicate page Title" error showing up in the SeoMOZ web app?
The most likely issue is that you have set your campaign up as root domain (i.e. with no www prefix for the domain), Root domains are fine, however if the links in your site point to www.domain.com and domain.com this will show as a duplicate page.
This behaviour is by design of SeoMOZ as Google will also be seeing your pages as duplicates which will most likely harm your SERPs
The best solution to this problem is to 301 or rel=canonical to the preferred domain
ie: if a user types in domain.com you 301 to www.domain.com
Make sure you do this for all domains/subdomains you have pointing to your site and add the trailing slash to the domain i.e. http://www.domain.com/ as this gets added anyway.
This will stop the page reporting as duplicates, also Google will only see one version of your pages which should pack some rankings bonus' for you.
Hope that helps
Justin

Depends on the tool you are using but duplicate page title would have to be an exact match on the page title I would expect...
-
Where are you seeing this error appear?
And no, it's unlikely that if all your page titles are being appended with your company name that this would flag duplicate page titles.
If your website is dynamic, it is likely that your page titles are being rewritten but something is delaying the time it takes to rewrite them so any bot/crawler is just detecting them as duplicates... Possibly.
-
Thanks, but I'm still unsure.
Does "Duplicate Page Title" mean the whole page title is used on another page or can it be just certain words are repeated as I am getting lots of errors even thought page title is different?
-
If the words are different it is highly unlikely that this is the issue. It might be possible if the titles were (for example) Sugar-company name Sugars-company name, sugary-company name.
But even then it would be a stretch. Are you sure that your website platfor hasn't dynamically created mirror pages? This happened to us in Magento recently. The developer didn't know any better and we had to set him straight.

We added hundreds of pages to our website & restructured the layout to include 3 additional locations within the sub-pages, same brand/domain name. How long could Google take to crawl/index the new pages and rank the keywords used within those pages?
We added hundreds of pages to our website & restructured the layout to include 3 additional locations within the sub-pages, same brand/domain name. The 3 locations old domains were redirected to their sites within our main brand domain. How long could Google take to crawl/index the new pages and rank the keywords used within those pages? And possibly increase our domain authority hopefully? We didn't want our brand spread out over multiple websites/domains on the internet. This also allowed for more content to be written on pages, per each of our locations service's, as well.

Problems preventing Wordpress attachment pages from being indexed and from being seen as duplicate content.
Hi According to a Moz Crawl, it looks like the Wordpress attachment pages from all image uploads are being indexed and seen as duplicate content..or..is it the Yoast sitemap causing it? I see 2 options in SEO Yoast: Redirect attachment URLs to parent post URL. Media...Meta Robots: noindex, follow I set it to (1) initially which didn't resolve the problem. Then I set it to option (2) so that all images won't be indexed but search engines would still associate those images with their relevant posts and pages. However, I understand what both of these options (1) and (2) mean, but because I chose option 2, will that mean all of the images on the website won't stand a chance of being indexed in search engines and Google Images etc? As far as duplicate content goes, search engines can get confused and there are 2 ways for search engines

to reach the correct page content destination. But when eg Google makes the wrong choice a portion of traffic drops off (is lost hence errors) which then leaves the searcher frustrated, and this affects the seo and ranking of the site which worsens with time. My goal here is - I would like all of the web images to be indexed by Google, and for all of the image attachment pages to not be indexed at all (Moz shows the image attachment pages as duplicates and the referring site causing this is the sitemap url which Yoast creates) ; that sitemap url has been submitted to the search engines already and I will resubmit once I can resolve the attachment pages issues.. Please can you advise. Thanks.0 -
Our on page blog is off page! What?
Hi Moz Community, I have a customer who has a blog that is FULL of great unique content however the blog resides at a URL that differs from the main site. Eg. blog.mywebsite.com Instead of www.mywebsite.com/blog . With the latest Google updates I fear that this may be hurting our web ranking. In addition the web blog is a carbon copy of the main URL. My Question: I am going to schedule a meeting with the web designers, How vociferously should I argue for having them move the blog onsite and write 301 redirects for the current blog site?

Google result showing old Meta Title / Description even though page view source shows new info.
Hey guys! I'm struggling with why Google is ignoring my Meta Title / Description. I made a pretty drastic change to both about a week ago and on the results it hasn't changed. I'm on first page with several keywords and I think this weird caching is hurting me on where I'm at on the page. Thoughts / Ideas?

Am I pigeonholing myself with a geo-targeted titles?
I've got a site that ranks very well in my local area for mobile app development related keywords. We use terms like "NYC" and "New York" in our title tags. However I do not believe that this is NORMALLY a "local" geo keyword. The reason that I believe this is because my competitors rank all over the USA (and even in Europe) for these keyterms, but we only rank in our local area of New York. Is it possible that by including geographic terms like NYC and New York, that we are actually HURTING our rankings in other cities like Los Angeles and Chicago? If we removed these words, could we see rankings increases in other parts of the world? The other side of the coin is that if we remove the "NYC" and "New York" keyterms, could we see serious drops in the local area as a result?

SEO page length 4500+ words
I have read varying discussions on this... some say it is good or rather it does not really matter (as long as not stuffed with keywords) and some say more than 1000+ words is bad! I have a travel site and I want to add an historical page about the zone. It is very interesting (very organic, not written for SEO purposes as such). It adds flavor and details to a site that is really all about sales. Does anyone have an opinion whether this is detrimental to SEO or not?

Duplicate home page /index.asp /index.php etc
We recently moved www.devoted2vntage.co.uk to shopify but seem to have multiple home page variants still in google index. I am concerned that these will be causing duplicate content. I have redirected the offending URLs below to www.devoted2vintage.co.uk/ and have set up a canonical URL but need an expect to tell me if I have taken the current steps and if not, exactly what I need to do. www.devoted2vintage.co.uk/index.php www.devoted2vintage.co.uk/index.htm www.devoted2vintage.co.uk/index.html www.devoted2vintage.co.uk/index.shtml www.devoted2vintage.co.uk/index.aspx www.devoted2vintage.co.uk/index.cfm www.devoted2vintage.co.uk/index.pl www.devoted2vintage.co.uk/index.asp
