Organic traffic down after 301 internal linkstructure
-
Hi, i have a question.
On a wordpress site i made a change redirecting (301) all traffic from /category/subject to /subject/ - I removed the /category/.
Now i have a big drop in visitors from google. I waited for the traffic to return for some over one month now but with no luck.
What can i do best. return to /category/ with 301 redirect or will this hurt me more.
Thanks,
Robin

A small amount of weight / authority will be lost when changing the URL's and 301 redirecting to the new locations. It's only fractionable but could be the difference between 3 or 4 positions in the search results within your niche.
It's possible there could be an issue with the 3rd party plugin you used, they may have overlooked something critical in this process.
When did you notice the drop in rankings / traffic? Is it possible it could also be due to Panda/Penguin preparation/updates also?

Thanks Geoff for youre responce.
I did change the permalinks structure with a plugin, this plugin also made a redirect to the new url.
I can see ranking drops for specefic category urls. these category used to get much traffic from google (organic).
But i waited for more then one month to get back the normal rankings id did have before. but wit no luck.
Because i dont want to have a drop again, i am not doing anything right now. i mean not changing back the urls to its original form with the /category/
i know there are several links pointing to category's.. external i mean. So when changing back to the original form should get the linkjuice flowing again. You should think.
But is this so? because the urls are new again in google.
I never tried this so i dont know what to expect.

Did you actually rewrite the URL's using mod_rewrite in .htaccess or change the permalink structure in Wordpress?
If the new URL structure was implemented correctly, did you test the 301 redirects to ensure they were actually redirecting to the correct destinations?
Have you analysed the traffic in analytics to establish what URL's are seeing the drop in traffic? If the old URL's were indexed in Google with authority, the change to your URL structure would have caused a dip in organic rankings and subsequently traffic...

Internal links best practices
In looking at the inbound links to a client’s Home page, I see that the link from each page of the website back to the Home page is an image, and the ALT text is “Home.” I have a few questions about this, and would appreciate help understanding best practices: --Does it matter that the link back to the Home page is an image (presumably the client’s logo)? -- If we keep the image link, wouldn’t it be better to use “client’s company name” as ALT text rather than “Home”? --Should I recommend using an HTML link back to the Home page, and using the company name as anchor text? (I don't think it's relevant, but the site is built in Drupal.) Thanks!

Did I cause my 70% drop in organic traffic?
Held top 10 SERPS for brands over the past few years, did a site redesign on May 19th, site used to have a long left hand nav consisting of each brand I carried. Site redesign was an attempt to make it cleaner and more compact. Now the site has a top nav menu with categories based on garment type and the addition of a brand category, no fly out nav menu, these links just open the sub-category page. On the 10th I checked my SERPS and almost threw up, off the map, no where to be found at all. Would a site redesign take almost 2 months to reflect? Am I being penalized by Google(no notification in GWT). I'm lost and thinking of how to tell my landlord I'm not going to be able to pay rent in a couple weeks.

Traffic stats disaster
Hi, We have recently moved a few old websites to an existing one and redesigned the existing website too. The visits in Analytics have fallen though the roof in the last few days. I would expect the traffic to have gone up because visitors from the old websites should now be on the redesigned one. Not sure what the problem is entirely. GA code is on the site but not before the closing head where I asked for it to be put. It's just before closing body tag. Does it make a difference? (It's a CMS site). GA code must be working because visits are being recorded (tens rather than the expected hundreds). Redirects have not been done properly - not sure what IT have done there. Would the lack of proper redirects be the sole reason for the drop? I am still hassling for 301's to be sorted. Thanks all

Am I using 301 correctly?
Hello, I have a 'Free download' type site for free graphics for designers. To prevent hot linking we authenticate the downloads and use a 301 redirect. So for example: The download URL looks like this if someone is clicking on the download button: http://www.website.com**/resources/243-name-of-the-file/download/dc37** and then we 301 that URL back to: http://www.website.com**/category-name/243-name-of-the-file** Is a 301 the correct way to do that?

301 redirects on Windows server
Hi, We are soon moving www.ourumbrellaorganisationwebsite.co.uk/oldsubsidiaryname/index.aspx AND www.differentolddomainname.co.uk to just www.ourumbrellaorganisationwebsite.co.uk (an existing site which will no longer have the old subsidiary name sub section). How do we do the 301 redirects on a Windows server? Helicon has been suggested but I don't know it. I know we need to 301 redirect 'old' pages to the equivalent new ones, but is it a problem to do all of the old pages (there are lots) or should we just just do a few? is there ever a downside to doing individual redirects for an entire old site? Also, once the 301 redirects are in place from the old domain, is it possible to let the old domain expire and if so, at what point? Thanks

301 redirect Issues
my clients site is www.greenbayharvest.co.uk When you enter that URL it redirects to www.greenbayharvest.co.uk/shop, dont ask why, thats the way they set it up and thats what im stuck with. So, how do i resolve the 301 issue here. we want all things to point to www.greenbayharvest.co.uk, in terms of SEO but does the fact that there is a redirect going to /shop make this an issue? we appear to have: www.greenbayharvest.co.uk/shop www.greenbayharvest.co.uk greenbayharvest.co.uk greenbayharvest.co.uk/shop all these URL's go to the same same page so what is the best way to correct this? thanks for any help on this Lee

301 redirects and OSE
We run a blog/video real estate site (yochicago.com) as one of the venues for sponsored content for our clients looking for off-page SEO and inbound links. I'm working with a client who we've linked to a handful of times in the last few weeks, but I'm not seeing any external links from our site on PRO/OSE. Come to find that our writer has been linking to http://clientsite.com, instead of http://www.clientsite.com, which is the canonical site. I wouldn't have thought that this would make a difference, and about an hour of web research seems to confirm that it shouldn't make a difference, save for losing a little bit of SEO credit. What am I missing? Any input would be appreciated.

How do I 301 url's with numbers in them?
I have a number of 404 error pages showing in webmaster tools and some of the url's have numbers, % symbols, and some are pdf's. My usual 301 redirect in my htaccess file does NOT redirect these pages where the url's have special characters. What am I doing wrong?
