Duplicate title tag error
-
Hi all,
I am new to SEO, and we have just launched a new version of our site (kept the domain name the same though). I keep getting errors for duplicate title tags - e.g. www.sandafayre.com/default.aspx and www.sandafayre.com/Default.aspx, www.sandafayre.com/StampAuctions.aspx and www.sandafayre.com/stampauctions.aspx (plus loads others :o). The only difference each time seems to be the capitalisation of the first character - but I though URLs were not case sensitive? I've been advised to add the rel canonical tag to one of the pages, but the problem is I really only have 1 version of each page! Can anybody help please?
Many thanks in advance!
Nikki

Thanks Steven and Roel, that points me in the right direction and seems a logical way to proceed!

Hi Nikki,
You can fix this by editing your .htaccess (if you use one) or by making changes on the server-side, just like Steven said.
Some more info on changing it by .htaccess:

Hi Nikki,
Some web servers are case sensitive (ours is) and it can cause problems with "duplicate" pages and even 404 errors for capitalised urls.
The first thing you should do is talk to the people responsible for managing that server and see what they can do to normalise the file structure of your website.
Be careful though that links to any capitalised version still pass through.

Meta tag Syntax
Hi, This might seem silly. What is the correct syntax for the meta tag used when noindexing webpages? I have "". I have seen it both with and without the forward slash before the greater than sign. Does it make any difference if the forward slash is present or not? Cheers

When is Duplicate Content Duplicate Content
Hi, I was wondering exactly when duplicate content is duplicate content? Is it always when it is word-for-word or if it is similar? For example, we currently have an information page and I would like to add a FAQ to the website. There is, however, a crossover with the content and some of it is repeated. However, it is not written word for word. Could you please advise me? Thanks a lot Tom

Why are my 301 redirects and duplicate pages (with canonicals) still showing up as duplicates in Webmaster Tools?
My guess is that in time Google will realize that my duplicate content is not actually duplicate content, but in the meantime I'd like to get your guys feedback. The reporting in Webmaster Tools looks something like this. Duplicates /url1.html /url2.html /url3.html /category/product/url.html /category2/product/url.html url3.html is the true canonical page in the list above._ url1.html,_ and url2.html are old URLs that 301 to url3.html. So, it seems my bases are covered there. _/category/product/url.html _and _/category2/product/url.html _ do not redirect. They are the same page as url3.html. Each of the category URLs has a canonical URL of url3.html in the header. So, it seems my bases are covered there as well. Can I expect Google to pick up on this? Why wouldn't it understand this already?

Swapping key phrases in URL, Title and H1 tag
I was wondering if swapping key phrases would still work in URL, Titlte and H1 tags For example: <code>Car Sales Melbourne Sales Car Melbourne carsalesmelbourne.com.au salescarmelbourne.com.au</code> So the second key phrase would you be able to get similar effect with correct key phrase or if location is different, would this not work at all?

Fixing Duplicate Pages Titles/Content
I have a DNN site, which I created friendly URL's for; however, the creation of the friendly URL's then created duplicate page content and titles. I was able to fix all but two URL's with rel="canonical" links. BUT The two that are giving me the most issues are pointing to my homepage. When I added the rel = "canonical" link the page then becomes not indexable. And for whatever reason, I can't add a 301 redirect to the homepage because it then gives me "can't display webpage" error message. I am new to SEO and to DNN, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Tagging Assets
As I am finding ways to integrate keyword diversity into my key landing pages, I want to start adding META information to content such as images and videos. 1. Any blog posts on best practices you can send me to? 2. Can I add META information to iFrames? Or do i have to rely on the tags added within Vimeo & You Tube? Thank you again

Crawl Errors for duplicate titles/content when canonicalised or noindexed
Hi there, I run an ecommerce store and we've recently started changing the way we handle pagination links and canonical links. We run Magento, so each category eg /shoes has a number of parameters and pages depending on the number of products in the category. For example /shoes?mode=grid will display products in grid view, /shoes?mode=grid&p=2 is page 2 in grid mode. Previously, all URL variations per category were canonicalised to /shoes. Now, we've been advised to paginate the base URLs with page number only. So /shoes has a pagination next link to /shoes?p=2, page 2 has a prev link to /shoes and a next link to /shoes?p=3. When any other parameter is introduced (such as mode=grid) we canonicalise that back to the main category URL of /shoes and put a noindex meta tag on the page. However, SEOMoz is picking up duplicate title warnings for urls like /shoes?p=2 and /shoes?mode=grid&p=2 despite the latter being canonicalised and having a noindex tag. Presumably search engines will look at the canonical and the noindex tag so this shouldn't be an issue. Is that correct, or should I be concerned by these errors? Thanks.
