Large volume of ning files in subdomain - hurting or helping?
-
I have a client that has 600 pages in their root domain and a subdomain that contains 7500 pages of un-seoable Ning pages. PLUS another 650 pages from Sched.com that also is contributing to a large volume of errors.
My question is - should I create a new domain for the Ning content - or am I better off with the volume of pages - even if they have loads of errors?
Thanks!

Heya,
I don't know what 'Sched.com' is as there's nothing on that domain, or what you mean by a 'Ning' file, but applying basic rules
- Do what you can/have to, to reduce errors on the site - this may involve restructuring the site or moving files around
- You don't need new domains for storing content, sub-domains or sub-folders will suffice
- Having content/files which are not 'SEO-able' is not an issue. If you focus on the user's experience of the website, reduce clutter and errors and ensure the site is easily crawlable then you are getting things off on the right footing.
- 600 pages in a root domain is crazy, but if they are named helpfully then it doesn't necessarily have to be a problem. I often have sites where an index.php governs the site and then all the content is stored in a sub-folder. It's not necessarily where the files are stored, but how they are managed and organised that makes a difference to the webmater, website visitors and indeed, search engines.
- You should be able to fix errors without moving pages off-site, else why have them anywhere?
Hope this helps in some way

If I redirect a subdomain, does this affect the parent domain?
Hi I have a company for example: abc.com and they have a subdomain def.abc.com with a lot of errors. These errors i believe affect the parent domain abc.com. So my company would like to redirect the subdomain to another domain altogther ex: xyz.com Can i redirect the subdomain def.abc.com to another website domain? Would this affect the parent domain in a good or bad way? Or should i be using an external links to point to a new domain for the subdomain? Trying to think what's best for SEO and the parent domain. Thanks!

Orphan Duplicate is created as Subdomain in Google Search
We noticed that some of our results on google for the blog are also come up with subdomain that is not linked from anywhere on the website. For example: SUBDOMAIN1.website.com/blog/content.html -> it redirects to website.com/blog/content.html SUBDOMAIN1 is not linked anywhere on the website. How did the google find it in the first place? Why does it still keep it in the search results? How do you get rid of it?

Hacked website - Dealing with 301 redirects and a large .htaccess file
One of my client's websites was recently hacked and I've been dealing with the after effects of it. The website is now clean of malware and I already appealed to Google about the malware issue. The current issue I have is dealing with the 20, 000+ crawl errors which are garbage links that were created from the hacking. How does one go about dealing with all the 301 redirects I need to create for all the 404 crawl errors? I'm already noticing an increased load time on the website due to having a rather large .htaccess file with a couple thousand 301 redirects done already which I fear will result in my client's website performance and SEO performance taking a hit as well.

Clean URL help!
Hi all, In short, i'm looking to redirect examplepage.html to examplepage .I've got rid of the .html, sitewide this morning. However I want to redirect Google & people who have bookmarked the old url structure. Currently if you have the extension on or not, it will show in your browser. I'm wanting /examplepage.html to 301 redirect to /examplepage I've gone the normal way I'd do it by adding in .htaccess: Redirect 301 /examplepage.html http://www.example.com/examplepage I'm assuming it isn't redirecting as the example.html page is no longer... what is the way around this? Thanks for any help! In firefox the error of the page is: The page isn't redirecting properly Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete.

Robot.txt File Not Appearing, but seems to be working?
Hi Mozzers, I am conducting a site audit for a client, and I am confused with what they are doing with their robot.txt file. It shows in GWT that there is a file and it is blocking about 12K URLs (image attached). It also shows in GWT that the file was downloaded 10 hours ago successfully. However, when I go to the robot.txt file link, the page is blank. Would they be doing something advanced to be blocking URLs to hide it it from users? It appears to correctly be blocking log-ins, but I would like to know for sure that it is working correctly. Any advice on this would be most appreciated. Thanks! Jared ihgNxN7

I have evidence that product videos are hurting our rankings - How do I hide them!?
We normally rank between #1-3 for long-tail product related keywords in our industry. Then we saw our rankings drop when we added product videos to some of our product pages. My hypothesis was that for most ecommerce-related queries, Google has a certain aesthetic that they are going for in the SERP's. They like to show video listings somewhere in the middle of the first page.. not as one of the first 3 results. Product page Product page Google shopping results Product page Video Result on product page Video Result on product page Product page I did an experiment by removing the product videos from a selection of our product pages and as soon as they were reindexed w/o the video we saw an average of a 3 spot jump in rankings! Since the product videos have actually helped on-site conversion rate.. we'd like to keep them on the product pages but hide them from being indexed by Google. Is there a safe way to do this? Is it possible to use an i-frame, or will Google still see the video on the page and index it as such. Thanks for any advice!
