Ranking for a plural keyphrase, but very poorly for the singluar?
-
Hi everyone, our site is ranking well for the plural of a key phrase. But very poorly for the singular. Any suggestions?
-
No problem at all. Thanks a lot for the tips!

Recall the importance of the page title in establishing page relevance. The page title in this instance is using the plural version of your targeted keyword. Perhaps this is factor alone is influencing the ranking priorities of the search bots and producing the results you are seeing.
I do see the singular version of the keyword appears in several instances on the page, but is wrapped in an
with an
appearing _prior - _which struck me as a bit odd.
Sorry, but I didn't have time to dig into linking profiles

We have one page for both phrases (absoluteautomation.com/driveway-alarm.html)
-
Assuming your on-page optimization is in place; do you have separate pages optimized for each version of the keyword (e.g. plural and singular) or are both versions of the keyword on the same page? Linking profiles utilizing variations of the keywords could also be a factor... sorry, but you really haven't presented enough information to arrive at a sound assessment.

How do I make sure my homepage ranks better than my 2nd page when I need the same keywords for both? I don't want them competing against each other for keywords.
I seen here on SeoMoz something about more than one page having the same keywords so they don't compete against each other for the same keywords that makes sense to me. But I would like my main page (homepage) to be ranked better over time rather than the 2nd page or do I just not care about the second page ranking at all and don't SEO the page very well? ,Both pages have similar content so I need the keywords for both. So im very confused on what to do with the second page. Thanks in advance to any helpful answers, i am a newbie when it comes to SEO.

Keyword affected by the following word, forming a keyphrase?
This came to my mind: Can word(s) immediately following a keyword hurt the ranking for that keyword, if they together form a phrase known to Google? Should I avoid keyphrases to rank better for a single keyword? Let's say that I have a website that ranks very well for the keyword "rice". The home page title and headline might be "Rice around the world". Now let's assume I change the "around the world" to "pudding", making the title "Rice pudding", which is in fact one of the keyphrases suggested by Google Instant when one types "rice". Is it possible that Google now decides the page should not rank well for the generic "rice" search any more, because it is not about rice as such but rice pudding, and as a result the ranking for the "rice" search suffers? This would probably make sense in some cases. A "flights to Hawaii" page should not rank very highly for a generic "flights" search, but just that specific search. However a "flights online" page might be all right to rank as high as any, if the meaning is understood (in all languages).
