Is this duplicate content?
-
My client has several articles and pages that have 2 different URLs
For example:
is the same article as:
I was not sure if this was duplicate content or not ...
Or if I should be putting "/article.cfm" into the robots.txt file or not..
if anyone could help me out, that would be awesome!
Thanks

Agreed - although I think a 301-redirect or canonical tag implementation would probabyl be ok. If there's a database lookup that can translate the DocID into a URL string, the canonical is easy (I write some CF code, so I can at least tell you it's doable). Keep in mind that "article.cfm" is only one template, so if you can find a solution that's data-driven, it's just as easy for 1,000 pages as it is for 10.
You could also create a dynamic 301-redirect via <cfheader>- the core logic is the same. Basically, you look up the URL from the DocID and dynamically create the tag. You just need someone who understands your CMS and data. The actual code is only a few lines, but understanding your setup is the time-consuming part.</cfheader>

ATMOS, those are just the same page, so Canonical tag should do it, but also you want to stop google indexing it, so you could detect that it is called with the article.cfm and use a no index META tag too, but not if it uses the friendly url

I mostly agree with kchan.
- It is considered duplicate content.
- Simplest way is to do rel canonical for the pages with ids.
However, I suspect 301 redirect is not the best way. Especially, if your website is using Omniture and/or Google web analytics code, you might get miscalculated traffic through them because of 301 redirect.
Be careful if you choose the last route.

Awesome Chan, thanks. That was my thought as well. Most difficult part will be determining how to get that script in place.

Any chance you can spend a little time writing it out?
My guess is that we should be doing a rel canonical tag on all the article.cfm?intDocID=22572 type pages, that would then direct the bots to our /bc-blazes-construction-trail. But what's the easiest way to do that across the whole site?
-
Hello,
It sure is duplicate content. By putting "/article.cfm" into the robot.txt won't work because if you do that you are just re-directing the whole folder. You need to do a permanent re-direct. I had a brief look at the site and it seems like there are over 1000+ pages. This might take a while but it is neccessary to do it, if not your clients rankings will not perform and most likely penalised. A simple way would be doing a canonical link in /article.cfm?intDocID=22572 so you are showing google the main article is located at /bc-blazes-construction-trail.
However, the best way would be doing a 301 permanent re-direct of course. I'm sure you could get a web dev to write a script to automatically run through the database and output the re-directs than manually re-directing 1000+ pages. If it can't be done, you could outsource it on freelancer.com for around $2-300.
Thanks

That would definitely be considered duplicate content. There are a few things you can do to fix it, but rather than wasting a bunch of time writing it out here I would recommend visiting the link below for more detailed info:

Backup Server causing duplicate content flag?
Hi, Google is indexing pages from our backup server. Is this a duplicate content issue? There are essentially two versions of our entire domain indexed by Google. How do people typically handle this? Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks, Yael

Do I need to add the actual language for meta tags and description for different languages? cited for duplicate content for different language
Hi, I am fairly new to SEO and this community so pardon my questions. We recently launched on our drupal site mandarin language version for the entire site. And when i do the crawl site, i get duplicate content for the pages that are in mandarin. Is this a problem or can i ignore this? Should i make different page titles for the different languages? Also, for the metatag and descriptions, would it better in the native language for google to search for? thanks in advance.

Manage category pages and duplicate content issues
Hi everybody, I am now auditing this website www.disfracessimon.com
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | teconsite
this website has some issues with canonicals and other things. But right now I have found something that I would like to know your opinion. When I was checking parts of the content in google to find duplicate content issues I found this: I google I searched: "Chaleco de streck decorado con botones" and found First result: "Hombre trovador" is the one I was checking -> Correct
The following results are category pages where the product is listed in. I was wondering if this could cause any problem related with duplicated content. Should I no index category pages or should I keep it?
The first result in google was the product page. And category pages I think are good for link juice transfer and to capture some searchs from Google. Any advice? Thank you0 -

http://www.sitename.com/category-name/filter1
http://www.sitename.com/category-name/filter1/filter2 Firstly, I thought that the filtres don't work. But, when I browse the site and I test it, I see that the filters are working and generate links like bellow:
http://www.sitename.com/category-name#/filter1
http://www.sitename.com/category-name#/filter1/filter2 The links without the # do not work; it messes up with the filters.
Why are the pages indexed without the #, thus generating me duplicate content?
How can I fix the issues?
Thank you very much!0 -
Duplicate Page Content Issues Reported in Moz Crawl Report
Hi all, We have a lot of 'Duplicate Page Content' issues being reported on the Moz Crawl Report and I am trying to 'get to the bottom' of why they are deemed as errors... This page; http://www.bolsovercruiseclub.com/about-us/job-opportunities/ has (admittedly) very little content and is duplicated with; http://www.bolsovercruiseclub.com/cruise-deals/cruise-line-deals/explorer-of-the-seas-2015/ This page is basically an image and has just a couple of lines of static content. Also duplicated with; http://www.bolsovercruiseclub.com/cruise-lines/costa-cruises/costa-voyager/ This page relates to a single cruise ship and again has minimal content... Also duplicated with; http://www.bolsovercruiseclub.com/faq/packing/ This is an FAQ page again with only a few lines of content... Also duplicated with; http://www.bolsovercruiseclub.com/cruise-deals/cruise-line-deals/exclusive-canada-&-alaska-cruisetour/ Another page that just features an image and NO content... Also duplicated with; http://www.bolsovercruiseclub.com/cruise-deals/cruise-line-deals/free-upgrades-on-cunard-2014-&-2015/?page_number=6 A cruise deals page that has a little bit of static content and a lot of dynamic content (which I suspect isn't crawled) So my question is, is the duplicate content issued caused by the fact that each page has 'thin' or no content? If that is the case then I assume the simple fix is to increase add \ increase the content? I realise that I may have answered my own question but my brain is 'pickled' at the moment and so I guess I am just seeking assurances! 🙂 Thanks Andy

Advice needed on how to handle alleged duplicate content and titles
Hi I wonder if anyone can advise on something that's got me scratching my head. The following are examples of urls which are deemed to have duplicate content and title tags. This causes around 8000 errors, which (for the most part) are valid urls because they provide different views on market data. e.g. #1 is the summary, while #2 is 'Holdings and Sector weightings'. #3 is odd because it's crawling the anchored link. I didn't think hashes were crawled? I'd like some advice on how best to handle these, because, really they're just queries against a master url and I'd like to remove the noise around duplicate errors so that I can focus on some other true duplicate url issues we have. Here's some example urls on the same page which are deemed as duplicates. 1) http://markets.ft.com/Research/Markets/Tearsheets/Summary?s=IVPM:LSE http://markets.ft.com/Research/Markets/Tearsheets/Holdings-and-sectors-weighting?s=IVPM:LSE http://markets.ft.com/Research/Markets/Tearsheets/Summary?s=IVPM:LSE&widgets=1 What's the best way to handle this?

Press Release and Duplicate Content
Hello folks, We have been using Press Releases to promote our clients business for a couple of years and we have seen great results in referral traffic and SEO wise. Recently one of our clients requested us to publish the PR on their website as well as blast it out using PRWeb and Marketwire. I think that this is not going to be a duplicate content issue for our client's website since I believe that Google can recognize which content has been published first, but I will be more than happy to get some of the Moz community opinions. Thank you
