Few questions regarding wordpress and indexing/no follow.
-
I'm using Yoast's Wordpress SEO plugin on my wordpress site which allows you to quickly set up nofollow / no index on specific taxonomies. I wanted to see what you guys thought was the best practice in setting up my various taxonomies.
Would you noidex, but follow all of these, none of these, or just some of these:
Categories, tags, media, author archives ( (My blog is mainly a single author blog (me) but my wife does sometimes write posts. So I didn't know how this effected everything. Also I could simply make the blog a single user blog and just have her posts be guest posts, but I'd rather leave her as a user.), and date archives.
The example I read on line only no-index's the date archives. Just curious what you guys thought.
Thanks.

And yah, he is one happy little panda.

Thanks Dan. This is great info, and your post was great. Right now I'm ont really using tags, and just using categories (around 4.) I'm about to start adding a few more categories and some child categories.
If you get a chance feel free to check out my site and see if my structure look ok. I'd appreciate it.

Hi There...
Definitely check out the SEO for WordPress post I did for Moz. I wrote it for those very types of questions.
However, to answer a little more specifically in your case, I would;
Index
- Categories
- Pages
- Posts
Noindex
- Author
- Dates
- Media
- Tags
- Search results
Follow
- Everything
Disable
- Nothing (in your case, you have two authors, so make the pages accessible, just not indexed)
NOTE: This is assuming (as Saijo says) you have the structure set up correctly. Usually this means;
- 5-8 Categories
- As many tags as you want
- Categories are more general (the 5-8 topics covering the whole blog)
- Tags are more specific fine tunings of categories
- Categories and Tags are all different from one another
Hope this helps!

Thanks for the help.
By the way, who is the happy panda?

Someone is a happy Panda ^_^
If you have structured you site well and don't go overboard with Categories / Tags then by all means leave them to be indexed BUT make sure to add a Title and Description for each of those Categories and Tags.
With Media I find it useful to index them .. made sure you add a alt tag for you images and add relevant titles for them.
Author Archives : If it's a single person blog then I would suggest to avoid using them and add a noindex to author archives BUT since your wife contributes to the blog my advice is to leave them as indexable ( make sure you add a Title and Description for this as well)
Adding a NOFOLLOW will tell the bot not to follow any links from that page. I usually don't add that.

Google Indexing Stopped
Hello Team, A month ago, Google was indexing more than 2,35,000 pages, now has reduced to 11K. I have cross-checked almost everything including content, backlinks and schemas. Everything is looking fine, except the server response time, being a heavy website, or may be due to server issues, the website has an average loading time of 4 secs. Also, I would like to mention that I have been using same server since I have started working on the website, and as said above a month ago the indexing rate was more than 2.3 M, now reduced to 11K. nothing changed. As I have tried my level best on doing research for the same, so please if you had any such experiences, do share your valuable solutions to this problem.

Stock lists - follow of nofollow?
a bit of a catch 22 position here that i could use some advice on please! We look after a few Car dealership sites that have daily (some 3 times a day) stock feeds that add and remove cars form the site, which in turn removes/creates pages for each vehicle. We all know how much search engines like sites that have content that is updated regularly but the frequency it happens on our sites means we are left with lots of indexed pages that are no longer there. now my question is should i nofollow/disallow robots on all the pages that are for the details of the vehicles meaning the list pages will still be updated daily for "new content" or allow google to index everything and manage the errors to redirect to relevant pages? is there a "best practice" way to do this or is it really personal preference?

For an SAB (Service Area Business) with a hidden address - Can you have more then one listing? Can you use a free Google Voice number? Can you forward the number to a main number? Can the listing be in an office building? Such as a rented space... For a non SAB listing with the address visible - Can you use free Google voice numbers for each listing and forward them to one main number?
