How to test a site for usability with hundreds users and get genuine feedback?
-
My question is twofold; firstly is there a recommended company that I could use to get feedback on my site usability. Ideally I would like this company to arrange a focus group of a couple hundred people that fit into the right demographic and organise a report on the opinions of the group and the issues faced.
Secondly an in-house understanding of usability
Now I would like to think that when I review a site for usability I am not biased in any way. But I believe that if I look at the page that I have created or even collaborated on that I will always miss usability issues as I frankly think my/our creation is amazing. I'm interested to know how people rank and check their site usability and what factors rank highest in their assessments i.e. the tools you use and how you use them.

Thanks for the suggestion I was hoping for something a bit more substantial. I suppose I was wondering how the Big Boys in the industry achieve usability test. I once read that Tesco spent some 40000 GBP on usability where would a corp that size get its focus group? Not that I have that kind of budget.

I've used feedbackarmy.com in the past.

If you just want to see a few users on your site you can try usertesting.com. I have gotten pretty good feedback from them that I hadn't considered before. But it is definitely not done on the scale you are talking about for the first part of your question.

Displaying different site content to users who have already visited your site
I've seen and heard about the concept of treating repeat site visitors differently, displaying different content based on behavior etc. Not sure what it's called buy Hubspot seems to offer something like this with their platform. Anyone know of a third party app (Wordpress perhaps) or tool that does this? How does this even work? Thanks for the help!!

When Googling site:mydomain.com what does listing order tell us?
To find all the pages on my site that are indexed by Google I can search using site:mydomain.com and it gives pages of results. But what does the order of results relate to? Is it page rank or strength? My list of pages doesn't appear to be in order of strength. And it's definitely not by age or alphabetical...

Getting Rid Of Bad Backlinks - should I pay?
I have had a sudden increase in "bad" incoming links to my site. And at the same time my ranking has taken a dive. I have not done any link building in the last few months, and I have used multiple tools to track incoming links, and they show a major increase in incoming links from "toxic" sites in the past couple of months. I have documented this entire process with reports and emails, and have contacted all the Sites concerned requesting that they kindly remove the links. Most have replied that we must pay them between $5 - $25 per link to be removed and some of the Sites have multiple links to us. I am not sure what we should do and am concerned that if we pay these companies to remove the link, they could create more links as it appears many are connected to multiple spam type directory Sites. On the other hand many Sites advise not to use the Disavow Tool unless you are sure you need to use it and that even if used the results may take a very long time. Our decline in our SEO ranking is really affecting our business and I would really appreciate advice as to what to do?

How to approach SEO for a large site that doesn't have specific keyword goals?
So, I have a project that has 10,000+ page of unique editorial content in a specific industry. They currently get about 500,000 pageviews a month and average just under 2 pages per visit. It has a 66 domain authority and has been doing "the basics" for SEO for about 7 years (headline is an H1, URL is custom while the headline is more "reader friendly", description is a snippet of the body copy a little into the first paragraph, nofollow in the comments). The crux is that it's an editorial publication so they're not targeting specific keywords, but a wide swath of keywords. Would it be best to just dive in and figure out some of the less competitive keywords for some of the articles that they could tailor some content to rank better for, then just move onto more and more? What are some ways to approach this if they just want to raise their general traffic and relevancy to the next level?

Two sites with different URLs
I help organize an ecommerce site for a company that is named after the state that the company was founded in (ex: Florida Pipes). Our programmer is thinking about creating a duplicate site that would have a name that was more location agnostic so people shopping on the site would not think that they may be ordering from far away hence incurring extra shipping charges. He said that the site would only have a different URLs, name and homepage but would link to all of the same stuff that is on the site that is up now. He said that there would be no way to tell (possibly for the layperson) that the two sites were related. Is this a good practice? Would we be penalized in search results for having two URLs linking to the same content? (We are a 30 year old company that ranks very high for our main keyword) Thank you for your input!

Testing Your Homepage Title Tag
It can be a scary thing to change your homepage title tag to get the best results in the SERP while also maintaining your rankings. You obviously want to be irresistible and clickworthy… so how much time do you give before changing it up to test again?
