Page Titles... question about which is better
-
Hi,
I'm kind of a newbie and I'm working on an e commerce website.
I would love to be able to optimize the site so that the keyword "dog boutique" was ranking for the homepage.
B/C a lot of the pages call from php to create the meta data, most of generated page titles look like "Product Name, Category - Moondoggie Dog Boutique"
My question is would it be more helpful to just have Moondoggie Dog Boutique on the page title on the page I would like to rank for "dog boutique" and use Moondoggie Inc. or Just Moondoggie in it's place on all of the other pages?
Would this help or make it worse?
Thanks!
KristyO

1. Export all links from Open Site Explorer and additionally any other link profile tool like majestic SEO or anything else.
2. Review the links (depending on the numbers) and spot by domain names first the ones that are looking spammy.
3. Review as much as possibile all / other links from the profile to see if those make sense, if there are any "bad neighbors", sites that are delisted etc.
4. Make a "bad boys" list with the links that you don't like, ask someone else to review them to have a second opinion and if those are not targeting the home page move those urls if possibile and set the target pages to 404 and when that's not an opinion try at least to go after the removal of the links - it's a pain, it's hard work but better safe then sorry.
There are also some services online that can do that - lately those are popping up like mushrooms after rain.

fishy links? Can you help me and explain a little more?
The site was 7 years old before I took over and switched it from .asp to .php this past may. I know there's a lot of stuff that just fell through the cracks when they didn't have anyone working consistently on the site, I would love to know how to fix all of the problems.
Thank you so much!

They used to be more confussing with numbers and such. Plus I set up my google parameters for that cat sorts
#.UA6rr-51DRg gets put onto the end of all the URLs b/c of the "add this" sharing tools I put in, it tracks the social media stuff. Is that not good and hurting me?
again, thank you so much for your help

glad to be of help! I like your site by the way, nice and clean and easy to find the products. I'd just have a look at the URLs that are sometimes generated when clicking on the navigation. It adds some dynamic stuff such as ?cat=plush+toys#.UA6rr-51DRg that could lead to some canonicalization trouble (though it doesn't seem to be an issue at the moment, fixing this might increase rankings a bit more).

Some suggestions:
1. Title Tag: cut down a little from TT lenght. Starting with the KW is ok but do the overall TT shorter. ( as long as it make sense)
2. You have a big Title on the page: move (if it make sense) the KW in front or closer to the front. Don't make that title identical with the Title Tag.
3. You don't have enough incoming links with the KE in the anchor text to make Google know your site is about the KW (dog boutique). You have some, some brand + KW combination and that is ok but not enough.
Also you have some links from goldenlinks.com.ar - those are not really helpful.
4. Change your inner structure as far as links (anchor text) to link to the home page with that KW incorporated some how.
5. if you can afford it have some social signals with the KW incorporated some how that will point to that page. Some posts on third party articles sites / blogs about that topic with some links to the home page will surly help.
I would say it's a good start if you can focus on those.
Please make sure you manage your link profile - there are some fishy links there in my opinion. You need to pay attention to those especially now with all the fus about unnatural links and all.
Hope it helps.

Thanks soo much! you kinda confirmed what I was thinking. I appreciate the help!

Personally, I don't like using such keywords in sitewide page titles. I mostly stick to just adding the brand name at the end of titles. In terms of ranking, it doesn't help to have "dog boutique" on several pages, as only one will be ranking for this term. IMO your site looks quite okay, i.e. the home page will be ranking for your targeted term.
I think your other page titles look good too - if you added "Moondoggie Dog Boutique" on all page titles, those might lose some relevance for the specific keywords you want to target there.
In short, adding "Moondoggie" at the end of your titles seems a good choice.

Why isn't there a browser tab title AND meta title?
Personal opinion; as a user, it makes sense for me to want a full 50+ character meta title which displays in a search engine that helps me determine if I want to click that link AND a concise browser tab title that tells me which page and brand I have open. As a search engine, I would (possibly wrongly) suppose that having one more piece user-facing of information would be helpful in understanding a page and that page's relation to the rest of the website. Theoretical example Meta title: A great title for the website I've been dreaming of! | OurBrand Browser tab title: Home | OurBrand

What link would be better?
Hi Guys, Just wondering what would be better in this instance: finding an old post (with good authority) and getting a link from that old article or creating a brand new article and adding the link to that. Finding an old post (with good authority) and getting a link from that old article Creating a brand new article and adding the link to that. Both naturally link out to the page you want a link too. To me, number 1 as the page already has authority but then again number 2 since Google might place some weight to recency. Any thoughts? Cheers.

WordPress posts Title field inserts title into blog posts like a headline but doesn't ad H1 tag how to change?
I have a Wordpress website which is just using the Default theme, when I post in the blog, whatever I put in the "Title" field at the top of the editor is automatically is placed within the body of the blog post, like a headline, but it doesn't include any H1 tags that I can see. If I add my own headline within in the blog editor, it still inserts the Title like a headline. I am using the Yoast SEO Plugin and also write the meta title there, should I just leave the Wordpress title field blank so it doesn't insert into the blog post? Or is that inserted Title being recognized as an H1 even though I don't see h1 tags anywhere? Hope this isn't too confusing.

How to rank product pages?
Hi guys, Please advice me on something improving my product pages ranking. We are doing well for head terms, categories but not ranking for product pages. We have issues with product pages which I am think is hard to tackle. For instance we have duplicate products (different colors), duplicate content internally (colors) and from manufacturer websites. Product pages linked from sub-category i.e. Home > Category > Sub-Category (20 per page) using pagination for next 20 and so on. Product pages linked internally via widgets that says other Similar products, featured products etc. Another issue with our product pages is that we are using third party reviews platform and whenever users add reviews to product pages this platform creates an hyperlink to different anchors which is not relevant to product. Example - http://goo.gl/NUG652 Can somebody please give some advice on how to improve rankings for product pages. writing unique content for thousands of pages is not possible. Even our competitor not writing unique content.

Redirecting thin content city pages to the state page, 404s or 301s?
I have a large number of thin content city-level pages (possibly 20,000+) that I recently removed from a site. Currently, I have it set up to send a 404 header when any of these removed city-level pages are accessed. But I'm not sending the visitor (or search engine) to a site-wide 404 page. Instead, I'm using PHP to redirect the visitor to the corresponding state-level page for that removed city-level page. Something like: if (this city page should be removed) { header("HTTP/1.0 404 Not Found");
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | rriot
header("Location:http://example.com/state-level-page")
exit();
} Is it problematic to send a 404 header and still redirect to a category-level page like this? By doing this, I'm sending any visitors to removed pages to the next most relevant page. Does it make more sense to 301 all the removed city-level pages to the state-level page? Also, these removed city-level pages collectively have very little to none inbound links from other sites. I suspect that any inbound links to these removed pages are from low quality scraper-type sites anyway. Thanks in advance!2 -
Page not appearing in SERPs
I have a regional site that does fairly well for most towns in the area (top 10-20). However, one place that has always done OK and has great content is not anywhere within the first 200. Everything looks OK, canonical link is correct, I can find the page if I search for exact text, there aren't any higher ranking duplicate pages. Any ideas what may have happened and how I can confirm a penalty for example. TIA,

Better to re-direct to a completely un-related page or 404?
We have about 1000 pages we need to eliminate from our site (of about 18000 URLs). these URLs don't see a ton of traffic, but may have some valuable links. Would we be better to 404 these or re-direct them to our homepage? Could re-directing to our homepage hurt us?

Additional Pages in SERP
Hi Mozers, Can anybody help me with this. For "keyword phrase" SERP looks like this: 1. keyword.com/page1 2. keyword.com/page2 3. Mysite.com/page1 4. mysite.com/page2 ... 13. Mysite.com/page3 14. Mysite.com/page4 Is it possible to include Mysite.com/page3-4 both to the top 4th-5th, or better merge this pages and promote only one? Thanks.
