Changing our homepage - what to bear in mind?
-
We're going to refresh our homepage by putting more content on it and a slightly different design.
Given that it's our highest authority page, I don't want to screw it up.
We're going to keep the titles / meta / copy the same during the transition, is there anything else I should bear in mind to avoid it plummeting down the rankings?
I ask as we have a 2nd smaller site and when I changed 1 word in the title of the homepage it lost 40 places on half its keywords. Lesson learned...
Thanks in advance for any tips

Hi Dan, wow 40 places for one word - that's harsh! I've seen a fairly common pattern on redesigns/content overhauls - rankings tend to drop immediately after major changes, but gradually rise back up (hopefully to higher than before) over the next few weeks.
Unfortunately it's very hard to predict how rankings will be affected, and given it's your home page that probably seems pretty scary. I would say:
- Change one element at a time and monitor the results. This will allow you to test exactly what's working and what;s not. So possibly add the content first, wait for any fluctuations to level out, then make the redesign.
- Run some user/AB testing to monitor the impact on visitors. This can give you some excellent data to give direction to the refresh. Even slightly different designs can have a huge impact on CTR and visitor behaviour.
Good luck with the refresh.

How to deal with URLs when changing shopping cart software to ensure SEO
NSFW ALERT (LINK BELOW) We are changing the shopping section of our website. Currently the products sit on our own website and when a user goes to checkout they are taken to Mals (a shopping cart site). This means our URL’s look like this. NSFWhttps://www.aprilnites.com.au/mascara_vibe.htmlThe new software is Ecwid and we are using this with a site created in RapidWeaver so the URLs will not be clean and will have all ? And # parameters. I’m wondering if this will hurt the SEO of our whole site or just the product pages. I’m also unsure of how best to deal with the current URLs. Should I use a 301 redirect on all of them to take the user back to the home page of the shop. For us the shop is more of a catalogue. Our main website is the most important part but I want to make sure we are following best practice when making this change. Hope someone can help. Many thanks

Changing Urls
Hi All, I have a question I hope someone can help me with. I ran a scan on a website and it has a stack of urls that are far too long. I am going through and changing the urls to shorter ones. But my question is regarding redirections. Wordpress seems to be automatically redirecting the old urls to the new ones, should i be adding a more solid 301 in as well or is the wordpress redirect enough? I ask as they dont all seem to stay redirecting Thanks in advance for the help

Changing URLs for SEO
Hi, Currently we have a page, /business, but we have shifted our strategy to optimize for this page for the keyword "enterprise" instead of "business". The page authority of this page is 18 and our domain authority is 35. I've already updated content and title tags to more of an enterprise focus. Would it be wise to move the page to /enterprise and create a 301 redirect from /business to /enterprise? Or is this too risky from an SEO standpoint? Thanks!

Should I change or redirect this URL?
Happy Friday everyone! I just noticed that one of our Attorney Profile's url's is wrong. We used to have someone named "Dana Fortugno" as our Family Law attorney, but when he left, (over two years ago) we hired "Scott Finelli." The person who setup the site, just changed the information on the page not url. So instead of it saying "http://www.kempruge.com/scott-finelli-jd-llm/;" it says "http://www.kempruge.com/dana-fortugno-jd-llm/." I'm considering taking all the content on the page with the wrong url, copying it to a new page with the correct URL and 301 redirecting (what would now be a blank page) to the new page with the correct URL. Is this the best way to handle this? Also, I don't believe there are many SEO concerns regarding the pages specifically. The profile pages aren't what we rank for in any of our Family Law related keywords. I am worried about having a completely blank page that just 301 redirects as looking bad to google, but not sure if it would? As always, thank you for your time and any assistance you can provide. Difference between changing sitename.com and sitename.com/ info?
my crawl is showing duplicate content between my sitename.com and sitename.com/ i remember the beginner's guide referencing that these are separate websites - but how do you modify their title info on a wordpress.org blog, and what's the difference between getting to these two sites? also, are there any wordpress.org plugins to mass fix meta descriptions, and not founds, retroactively? i have all in one seo, but not sure how to apply the changes retroactively. a new crawl shows too many to fix manually (89+) missing metas, mostly due to multiple pages on categories, etc. and other time consuming, tedious generations.. any help appreciated, thanks
