How do I "301 or Rel Canonical" a link.
-
I'm watching the webinar, Link Building w/ Open Site Explorer. One of the slide pages is 301/Rel Canonicaling Overlapping Content. Can you explain how this is done?
-
Thanks for the help. I'll take a look at my site config and make sure everything is as it should be.

Hi,
301 Redirection and Canonicaling are 2 different methods. But both can help you to avoid duplicating contents.
Hope you need to know how to do those, right?
301 redirection is using to direct one url to another url permanently. That means if you will redirect http;//www.yourdomain.com/images.php to http://www.yourdomain.com/images/ using 301 redirection, all the search engines will understand your page have permanently moved to a new location. So search engines will index your new page instead of the old page. And about 95% of link juice on old url will be redirected to new page.
301 redirection can be initiated by using .htaccess in linux servers and also in server side script in your page. If you have a plan to redirect using .htaccess file maybe this guide will help you.
If you are planing to redirect using the server side scripting this guide will help you.
Rel Canonical is a different way than redirection. It will not direct you to another location. As an example just imagine you have two pages with two different urls, first is http://www.yourdomain.com/page1.php and second page is http://www.yourdomain.com/page2.php but you have used same contents on both pages. So in this point you have a duplicate content issue. Now you have to select which page you need to be indexed by search engines. So, if you need to index the first page you the following Rel Canonical link between tags.
When using this canonical link users can visit both pages. It will not redirect. But search engines will understand the second page is just a duplicate page of first page.
Mostly this Rel Canonical link is so helpful to ignore the unwanted suffixes from url. Here is an example about that.
http://www.yourdomain.com/index.php
http://www.yourdomain.com/?refferer=some_refferer
http://www.yourdomain.com/index.php?sessid=a6yda7dafdd
Above url types (also more) can be indexed in search engines because of many reasons. But really those 3 urls will show you the contents of http://www.yourdomain.com/ So in this case there are 3 duplicate pages of http://www.yourdomain.com/ and search engines will also index those 3 duplicate pages and you will get duplicate content issue.
So, if you have used Rel Canonical tag to your home page as
then no problem there will generate how many kind of duplicates made of your home page. Search engines will ignore those and will not indexed and will not have any duplicate content issues.
Hope this will help you and ask for more help if there anything else you confusing.
Regards
Prasad

There are a few ways of doing this and it depends on how your website is set up, for example, you could do a 301 redirect in your htaccess file something like:
Standard 301 Redirect for Permanent Changes
redirect 301 /old-page.html http://www.example.com/newpage.html
You can add a canonical link in your head like:
If you're using wordpress it makes doing this a lot easier.

Google showing different links in SERPs
Google search results are showing my site links in both URLs, "mydomain.com" and "https://mydomain.com". However the one with https is showing a favicon, and the other one is not. So i wanna keep the https one and remove the other one. I went to GSC to submit "mydomain.com" for removal and it said that URL will be deleted in ALL of its variations. So how do i delete the "mydomain.com" links? Should i just index the ones with https again? Would that work? Someone suggested me to do 301 redirect on all pages that are being displayed twice. But i am not sure if i need to do that since i am using squarespace, and both of the links lead to the same page?

Site "Internal" Search Full-Text Indexing vs. Manual Tagging
I’m looking for recommendations on how to power site search in an efficient way. Ideally, I would like to get recommendations on platforms, tools, trends, technology and resources. This discussion does not really refer to SEO or site search optimization. It is more related to the technology used to power site search. I would like to get an idea on the differences between full-text indexing site search and site search that requires manual tagging.

"&" in search for site:domain.com
Hi, a few days ago we talked to a seo agency. They told us something about the "site:" search, that we hadn't heard before.

As they told us, a search for "site:domain.com/&" would give you the number of relevant pages that Google indexed for your domain. We tested this search with some domains. Lots of the results showed up to 25% less indexed pages, than the search for site:domain.com/ Has anyone heard of this before, or is it just a sales gimmick?0 -
Avvo.com: Are links in the contribution area bad for SEO?
Hello all and thank you for taking the time to read my question. I am struggling with a client of mine. I have done just about everything that I can think of that has worked on other sites. Banging my head up against the wall here. He is VERY active in the contribution area of Avvo.com (answering questions and making guides). His site use to rank very well but now it can't be found at all. One of the things that caught my attention is the way he would leave his citation in his answers for AVVO. He would leave a direct link to his website. Since his rankings have dropped I have advised him to stop. Do you think Google is treating them as spam? His link profile is small >1000 links but half of them are from AVVO I was wondering if anyone else any experience with this? Thanks in advance

Best way to prevent "Duplicate Content" for different links
We are working on job portal domain. As we know jobs going to be expired day by day. I will give you my question by example. Example: I have two links [mysite.com/Jobs-In-Cincinnati and mysite.com/Jobs-In-Atlanta]. Before month I had too many jobs on both the links. Jobs were expired one by one after two/three months I don't have any jobs on both the links. So I got same page content on both the links like "please refine search". Google consider these two pages as duplicate content issue. Will you please suggest which is the best way to come out from it? Thanks in advance.

Why would so many links be appearing in the source code of this page - but not on the page itself?
Hi everyone, Have a look at the source code of this page: http://www.daleproaudio.com/c-332-mixers.aspx Notice the numerous links in the source code that do not appear on the page. Is this cloaking? Or is it a by-product of their use of Nextopia? Bonus points if anyone knows what platform this site is running on 🙂 Thanks!

Link building concept (Croslink different mediums sites for seo purposes)
Hello all. This is my first post to seomoz.
SERP Trends | | nikosvasilakos
A large News Media Group has a News Vortal and 3 magazines (for kids, health, fashion)
All those different mediums have their content in independant websites (since the branding of all 5 Medium is very strong).
My question is how to croslink them editorially for seo purposes?
Is it ok if i put a news box at every magazine site?
Should i create links to news articles or to news categories or both?
Do links from unrelated sites dilute your rankings for your key phrases ? Thanks in advance0
