Duplicate page content and Duplicate page title errors
-
Hi,
I'm new to SeoMoz and to this forum. I've started a new campaign on my site and got back loads of error.
Most of them are Duplicate page content and Duplicate page title errors. I know I have some duplicate titles but I don't have any duplicate content.
I'm not a web developer and not so expert but I have the impression that the crawler is following all my internal links (Infact I have also plenty of warnings saying "Too many on-page links".
Do you think this is the cause of my errors? Should I implement the nofollow on all internal links? I'm working with Joomla.
Thanks a lot for your help

Hi Marco,
I took a look at your page at http://www.beautifulpuglia.com/it/linea-costiera/isole-tremiti.html
Looks like you've got the canonical in place okay here. The next step is to add the canonical on every page that is a duplicate of this page. And you want to make sure to point to the right page. Let me be clear: Every page that is a duplicate of this page should have the same canonical. In this case:
<link rel=”canonical” href=[”http://www.beautifulpuglia.com/it/gargano/isole-tremiti.html”/](view-source:http://www.beautifulpuglia.com/linea-costiera/%E2%80%9Dhttp://www.beautifulpuglia.com/it/gargano/isole-tremiti.html%E2%80%9D/)>
You can find the other pages you need to add this tag to in your SEOmoz report. In each duplicated content report, it will list the number of other pages that are duplicates. Simply click on the number to see the URLs.
I'm not a Joomla expert, but webmasters I've talked to have expressed that other platforms such as Wordpress and Drupal are much more accommodating of these types of fixes. There are some various plugin modules you can use, but you'll have to select one appropriate to your configuration.
Here's a good resource from Dr. Pete: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/duplicate-content-in-a-post-panda-world
Hope this helps. Best of luck.

Elias,
I too have 'thousands' of duplicated errors in SEOmoz. Most of which are because it is returning
/abc.com as a different page to /ABC.com
Surely Google doesn't do that? Just because one URL is in capital and the other small case? I also have no idea where SEOmoz is picking that up from......possibly links internal to the page with the hyperlink using different case?
It seems to me this is too sensitive and for me to fix that would take WEEKS!!!! I fail to see if there would be any uplift if Google sees beyond that issue as its cosmetic and not functional.
Regards
Andy

It looks fine to me. You will need to do the same on all of your pages.
If you've just added the code you will need to wait up to a week for SEOmoz to re-crawl your website depending on when you're site crawl is scheduled.
Let me know how you get on.

Hi Elias, Hi Marisa,
thanks you both
you are right, in the meantime I had done this but I have the impression it is not working and I don't know what I'm doing wrong.
I'm attaching a link to a page of my site (I hope I can do this). Please have a look at the code, you will see the tag rel=”canonical” href=”http://www.beautifulpuglia.com/it/gargano/isole-tremiti.html”/> which is indicating the URL I want to use. However SeoMoz is still giving me the error. And this is happening for both the Italian and English version.
So far I've only added the tag to this page, I want to find the solution before modifying all pages currently affected.

Thanks a lot again

Hi Marco, as Marissa says - by putting the canonical tag on one page you are putting it on all of them as they are in fact the same page - they are just reached by different URLs.
-
www.site.com/ and www.site.com/index.html, site.com/index.html/, ect, are already the same page. So, there's only one page TO put the tag on. You're just telling the crawlers that you only want one of them to get the credit, and which version of the page you prefer to be displayed.
-
Hi Elias,
thanks a lot for your reply. I've read few posts about the canonical tag and Yes I'm going to try it.
Just couple of things:
-
Let's say I have 4 duplicate for one page, I presume I have to add the tag in the head of only one page right? Does it make any difference which one I pick?
-
Any idea on how this can be implemented in Joomla? It doesn't seem to be very straightforward.
Thanks a lot
Marco

Hi Marco,
It seems to me like you need to implement the canonical tag.
Site crawlers/bots will consider the following pages as different pages because of their URL and thus tell indicate to them that the content is duplicated on each page...
By implementing the following tag on each of your sites pages (changing the URL for each page) you will tell the crawler which page they should be indexing and to ignore the other.
Here's an example of a canonical tag (to be placed within the head tag of the page)
I think this will sort out your duplication issues.
You can find more information about canonical URLs here http://www.seomoz.org/blog/canonical-url-tag-the-most-important-advancement-in-seo-practices-since-sitemaps
I hope this helps!

Shall we add engaging and useful FAQ content in all our pages or rather not because of duplication and reduction of unique content?
We are considering to add at the end of alll our 1500 product pages answers to the 9 most frequently asked questions. These questions and answers will be 90% identical for all our products and personalizing them more is not an option and not so necessary since most questions are related to the process of reserving the product. We are convinced this will increase engagement of users with the page, time on page and it will be genuinely useful for the visitor as most visitors will not visit the seperate FAQ page. Also it will add more related keywords/topics to the page.

On the downside it will reduce the percentage of unique content per page and adds duplication. Any thoughts about wether in terms of google rankings we should go ahead and benefits in form of engagement may outweight downside of duplication of content?0 -

Duplicate content, the distrubutors are copying the content of the manufacturer
Hi everybody! While I was checking all points of the Technical Site Audit Checklist 2015 (great checklist!), I found that the distrubutors of my client are copying part of the content to add it in their websites. When I take a content snippet, and put it in quotes and search for it I get four or five sites that have copied the content. They are distributors of my client. The first result is still my client (the manufacturer), but... should I recommend any action to this situation. We don't want to bother the distributors with obstacles. This situation could be a problem or is it a common situation and Google knows perfectly where the content is comming from? Any recommendation? Thank you!

Glossary index and individual pages create duplicate content. How much might this hurt me?
I've got a glossary on my site with an index page for each letter of the alphabet that has a definition. So the M section lists every definition (the whole definition). But each definition also has its own individual page (and we link to those pages internally so the user doesn't have to hunt down the entire M page). So I definitely have duplicate content ... 112 instances (112 terms). Maybe it's not so bad because each definition is just a short paragraph(?) How much does this hurt my potential ranking for each definition? How much does it hurt my site overall? Am I better off making the individual pages no-index? or canonicalizing them?

Best method for blocking a subdomain with duplicated content
Hello Moz Community Hoping somebody can assist. We have a subdomain, used by our CMS, which is being indexed by Google.
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | KateWaite
http://www.naturalworldsafaris.com/
https://admin.naturalworldsafaris.com/ The page is the same so we can't add a no-index or no-follow.
I have both set up as separate properties in webmaster tools I understand the best method would be to update the robots.txt with a user disallow for the subdomain - but the robots text is only accessible on the main domain. http://www.naturalworldsafaris.com/robots.txt Will this work if we add the subdomain exclusion to this file? It means it won't be accessible on https://admin.naturalworldsafaris.com/robots.txt (where we can't create a file). Therefore won't be seen within that specific webmaster tools property. I've also asked the developer to add a password protection to the subdomain but this does not look possible. What approach would you recommend?0 -
Is This Considered Duplicate Content?
My site has entered SEO hell and I am not sure how to fix it. Up until 18 months ago I had tremendous success on Google and Bing and now my website appears below my Facebook page for the term "Direct Mail Raleigh." What makes it even more frustrating is my competitors have done no SEO and they are dominating this keyword. I thought that the issue was due to harmful inbound links and two months ago I disavowed ones that were clearly spam. Somehow my site has actually gone down! I have a blog that I have updated infrequently and I do not know if it I am getting punished for duplicate content. On Google Webmaster Tools it says I have 279 crawled and indexed pages. Yesterday when I ran the MOZ crawl check I was amazed to find 1150 different webpages on my site. Despite the fact that it does not appear on the webmaster tools I have three different webpages due to the format that the Wordpress blog was created: "http://www.marketplace-solutions.com/report/part2leadershi/", "http://www.marketplace-solutions.com/report/page/91/" and "http://www.marketplace-solutions.com/report/category/competent-leadership/page/3/" What does not make sense to me is why Google only indexed 279 webpages AND why MOZ did not identify these three webpages as duplicate content with the Crawl Test Tool. Does anyone have any ideas? Would it be as easy as creating a massive robot.txt file and just putting 2 of the 3 URLs in that file? Thank you for your help.

Duplicate Page Content Errors on Moz Crawl Report
Hi All, I seem to be losing a 'firefighting' battle with regards to various errors being reported on the Moz crawl report relating to; Duplicate Page Content Missing Page Title Missing Meta Duplicate Page Title While I acknowledge that some of the errors are valid (and we are working through them), I find some of them difficult to understand... Here is an example of a 'duplicate page content' error being reported; http://www.bolsovercruiseclub.com (which is obviously our homepage) Is reported to have 'duplicate page content' compared with the following pages; http://www.bolsovercruiseclub.com/guides/gratuities http://www.bolsovercruiseclub.com/cruise-deals/cruise-line-deals/holland-america-2014-offers/?order_by=brochure_lead_difference http://www.bolsovercruiseclub.com/about-us/meet-the-team/craig All 3 of those pages are completely different hence my confusion... This is just a solitary example, there are many more! I would be most interested to hear what people's opinions are... Many thanks Andy
