Multiple domains pointing to same site
-
Over the years, we have acquired a great number of variations of our domains, or industry-specific domains to protect our brand. Currently, the majority of those domains are parked at the registrars. Would we do any harm to our rankings if we pointed the dormant domains to our website (www.ellsworth.com)? If not, are there any recommendations as the best way to do this, or just point them to the same IP?

Do 301s need to be added to htaccess file? Sorry to be a little thick on this, but the only thing I've done in the past is point a single domain at the the registrar level to dns1 and 2, or IP addresses.
-
Do theses domains have links pointing to them? If not, 301ing them to your domain won't have any SEO benefit. There could be a traffic benefit if any of these urls get type in traffic.
If the domains had backlinks then yes, doing a 301 redirect will pass the majority of the link equity on to the main domain.

I would say the example you are referring to is the same.
americanflour.com
americanherb.comWe parked them and pay the yearly fee and 301 them to our actual site. Some of them actually had a site at sometime. As for ranking I saw no change but they still bring in a small amount of traffic

Sorry to be a little thick on this subject, but what I'm referring to is pointing domains like:
stickyglues.com
adhesivespro.com
industrialadhesives.net
glueadvisors.org
(these are example, not ours)from the registrar to our current main IP address. If this is a 301 redirect, please detail a bit more.
Thanks!

Yes, it was a strange situation. Lets say I was www.example.com and someone got on a blog and put the link www.example.org so there were links to it from several sites. We owned www.example.org so I just 301 it to our current site. I hope this is what you meant

What types of backlinks did the domains have? Yours were "dormant" as well - that is, parked at the registrars?
-
I had the same situation a few months ago and just pointed them to my site as some of them did have some backlinks

Does anyone know the linking of hashtags on Wix sites does it negatively or postively impact SEO. It is coming up as an error in site crawls 'Pages with 404 errors' Anyone got any experience please?
Does anyone know the linking of hashtags on Wix sites does it negatively or positively impact SEO. It is coming up as an error in site crawls 'Pages with 404 errors' Anyone got any experience please? For example at the bottom of this blog post https://www.poppyandperle.com/post/face-painting-a-global-language the hashtags are linked, but they don't go to a page, they go to search results of all other blogs using that hashtag. Seems a bit of a strange approach to me.

Why is the Dev site indexing and not my actual Domain
hi guys I had 2 word press sites built but since they went live a couple of things aren't working. 1.when I do a keyword search one of the sites comes back with the actual URL and when I do another keyword search for the same site the DEV site comes back indexed and not the actual URL. 2. The other site originally started indexing with the DEV site and not the URL and the developer tried to fix it and now it doesn't index at all. Its been long enough time for it to index. Both URL's are live when put into a browser. Any advice would be great Thanks Jamie

301 redirecting old content from one site to updated content on a different site
I have a client with two websites. Here are some details, sorry I can't be more specific! Their older site -- specific to one product -- has a very high DA and about 75K visits per month, 80% of which comes from search engines. Their newer site -- focused generally on the brand -- is their top priority. The content here is much better. The vast majority of visits are from referrals (mainly social channels and an email newsletter) and direct traffic. Search traffic is relatively low though. I really want to boost search traffic to site #2. And I'd like to piggy back off some of the search traffic from site #1. Here's my question: If a particular article on site #1 (that ranks very well) needs to be updated, what's the risk/reward of updating the content on site #2 instead and 301 redirecting the original post to the newer post on site #2? Part 2: There are dozens of posts on site #1 that can be improved and updated. Is there an extra risk (or diminishing returns) associated with doing this across many posts? Hope this makes sense. Thanks for your help!

Have my site been penalised ?
Hi, I recently hired a link builder (who works for a digital marketing agency and wanted to earn some extra cash ) to do some link building for me on keyword Carpet Cleaner Hire Basically , May my ranking for this work has moved from 29 up to 13 , then down to 500 + and now up to 67 ?. It's been all over the place and I am worried that maybe google thinks its unnatural or to many links etc. I looked at some of the work this chap did and there was a log of bookmarks done , apparently to increase social awareness and some articles on random forums I never heard of but the articles didn't look to good and in my eyes were a little spammy.. I don't have any messages in WMT saying I have been penalised or anything but I am naturally worried that this chap may have caused damaged and that I was manually penalised. I have since asked him to stop immediately.. does this sound normal for the ranking to be all over the place in this manner when link building ? How can I tell if I have been manually penalized in any way ? What;s the general consensus ?. Should I contact google or leave it and see what happens ? Other keywords seems to be okay though. Any advice much appreciated. thanks Sarah.
