Hide H1 tags on pages. Don't chuckle-Need assistance.
-
I redesigned my companies website and I am first and foremost an SEO person so I know the importance of a well laid out website. Furthermore, I know realistically you should NEVER hide text whether it's with WH or BH intentions but here is my problem.
For every page I have all the details taken care of except proper placement of H1 tags.
- My website is responsive designed
- VERY competitive industry
- I have to make sure it is properly developed both design wise and seo wise
- It's an INC 5000 company so NO BH intentions
On phones and tablet devices I have the header images hidden and in the place of header images I have the information as in location, service, etc of whatever that page may be. This makes it look good on desktops and serves up information quickly to people using phones and tablets.
My question is:
Would it be bad to turn that text seen on tablets and phones into an h1 tag as it's hidden on desktops with CSS but available on mobile devices. My problem is making the h1 tag's work with the desktop versions visually as placement doesn't make since.
Any opinions are appreciated.
Thanks

Tricky. Here is my take.
Google, as I am sure you know, recommends responsive design so all 'versions' of a website operate under the same URL. https://developers.google.com/webmasters/smartphone-sites/details
However, it is very clearly stated "...serving the same HTML to all devices and using just CSS to change how the page is rendered on the device"
I read that as "Don't hide anything" They want the SAME html being served so I take that to mean all of it - not some.
Could you compromise and make it an H2 or H3 and just set the CSS to show that particular tag as a small sub-header on the desktop version, but a bigger more prominent header on the other versions?

I would never hide H1 tags. I personally would start thinking about completely different templates for mobile and desktop devices and optimise each for their intended target rather than try and serve the same site to both and compromise each user's experience.

Should you 'noindex' Checkout Pages?
Today I was reviewing my Moz analytics and suddenly noticed 1,000 issues with pages without a meta description. I reviewed the list and learned it is 1,000 checkout pages. That's because my website has thousands of agency pages from which you can buy a product, and it reflects that difference on each version of the checkout. So, I was thinking about no-indexing (but continuing to 'follow') these checkout pages, but wondering if it has any knock-on effects I may be unaware of? Any assistance is much appreciated. Luke

Client rebranded with a new website but can't migrate now defunct franchise website to new website.
Hi everyone, My client is a chain of franchised restaurants with a local domain website named after the franchise. The franchise exited the market while the client stayed and built its own brand with a separate website. The franchise website (which is extremely popular) will be shut down soon but the client will not be able to redirect the franchise website to the new website for legal reasons. What can I do to ensure that we start ranking immediately for the franchise keyphrase as soon as the franchise website is shutdown. We currently have the new website and access to the old website (which we can't redirect) Thanks, T

Why isn't the Google change of address tool working for me?
Last night I switched my site from http to https. Both sites are verified in Webmaster Tools but when I try to use the change of address it says- Your account doesn't contain any sites we can use for a change of address. Add and verify the new site, then try again. How do I fix this?

Changing my pages URL name - HELP NEEDED FAST
Hello, I need to change the URL name for a few pages on my site. The site was launched just recently, so it has no obvious ranking and traffic. My question is, what is the best practice for changing/deleting the page name? after deleting the page, should I go to Google webmaster tool and use URL Removal and remove the old page? I know that I have to also create a new XML sitemap file, but not sure about the old pages in google search result Thanks!

My "Root Domains Linking to the Page" is higher than competitors ranked above me.
Yet I'm ranked 7th on google.
Even worse the 3rd place ranked URL has very poor page authority and linking. What is giving these poor sites such great rankings? Jxluy8Z.png0 -
What's the best way to check Google search results for all pages NOT linking to a domain?
I need to do a bit of link reclamation for some brand terms. From the little bit of searching I've done, there appear to be several thousand pages that meet the criteria, but I can already tell it's going to be impossible or extremely inefficient to save them all manually. Ideally, I need an exported list of all the pages mentioning brand terms not linking to my domain, and then I'll import them into BuzzStream for a link campaign. Anybody have any ideas about how to do that? Thanks! Jon

If you want to add both "noindex, follow" and "noopd" should you add two meta robots tags or is there a way to combine both into one?
