Duplicate content
-
I run about 10 sites and most of them seemed to fall foul of the penguin update and even though I have never sought inorganic links I have been frantically searching for a link based answer since April.
However since asking a question here I have been pointed in another direction by one of your contributors. It seems At least 6 of my sites have duplicate content issues.
If you search Google for "We have selected nearly 200 pictures of short haircuts and hair styles in 16 galleries" which is the first bit of text from the site short-hairstyles.com about 30000 results appear. I don't know where they're from nor why anyone would want to do this. I presume its automated since there is so much of it.
I have decided to redo the content. So I guess (hope) at some point in the future the duplicate nature will be flushed from Google's index?
But how do I prevent it happening again? It's impractical to redo the content every month or so.
For example if you search for "This facility is written in Flash
to use it you need to have Flash
installed." from another of my sites that I coincidently uploaded a new page to a couple of days ago, only the duplicate content shows up not my original site. So whoever is doing this is finding new stuff on my site and getting it indexed on google before even google sees it on my site!
Thanks,
Ian

I don't have any experience with Cloudflare so I can't offer an opinion on their services. And without a proper audit of your site and link profile, there is no honest way to know exactly what the core issues are on the site. Short of a proper audit, it's all a guess. That's the bigger concern.
Maybe it's links. Maybe its duplicate content perception. Maybe it's a dozen seemingly insignificant issues that accumulated to the breaking point with a trigger event like Penguin.
Unfortunately that's the reality of SEO in 2012.

ok, maybe I'm not getting something or not explaining myself properly.
When I say things like "30000 times", "every page" and "it is the majority of the content" in the context that I have in my head I'm saying its not a trivial thing and I have looked into it at length.
If you thought there was some verification needed to answer the question the information is there to have a look.
Complex things are made up of lots of uncomplex things.
How strong is this site? Up until April I'd say very strong, it came in at number 1 for several high volume keywords (still does in bing and yahoo)
As I said in the original question I have decided to redo most of the content on this site anyway so whether this whole issue is an issue or not isn't an issue.
The original question was how do you prevent it happening again? Is rel author rel-publisher and g+ the answer?
or what about this? http://www.cloudflare.com/plans

"it is the majority of my content". that's what I asked originally - if it is the majority of content on individual pages. If that's true, it could be a cause of problems, however SEO is an extremely complex process with multiple algorithms so unfortunately, without a detailed review of the site, it's dangerous to assume that specific issue is the cause of your problems.
How strong is your site in other regards? Do you implement rel-author or rel-publisher code and tie it to a Google+ account to communicate you're the original source? Do you have enough other trust signals in place? There are many other similar questions that need to be answered before anyone can confidently make serious recommendations.
-
1. Google doesn't seem to know this and has penalised my sites for something.
2. It is the majority of the content. Its pretty much all of it, upto 30000 times.
3. I've lost 70% of my traffic via recent Google updates. That is THE over whelming concern which is why I came and joined this site.
I arrived at this point by asking this question http://www.seomoz.org/q/penguin-issues if you disagree with the track I got sent on can you suggest a different one?
-
1. you're not generating the duplicate content so there's nothing you can logically do about on any kind of a scalable frequency, let alone prevent.
2. If it's not the majority of content on a page, it's not a serious problem. In fact, it's common to the internet.
3. Don't allow non-issues become an overwhelming concern. Focus on what you can do something about, and things that are more important and really do have a negative impact on your SEO that are within you control.

OK but the snippet is an exact match (in speech marks) and there's 30000 of them that's not just monkeys typing Shakespeare. Every page (300 or so) on that site has unique content and more or less each page has upto 30000 duplicates, most a lot less that 30000 but a lot more that 1, which it should be. If there was a couple of coincidences, fine, but there's not.
-
Just finding a snippet that's as short as the examples you gave is not a reason to be concerned about duplicate content in itself. A typical page should have hundreds of words and rank for whatever phrase or phrases you care about, not for a single sentence within the content.
If, on the other hand, you have the overwhelming majority of the content from one of your pages duplicated, that's a reason to be concerned.
So - how much content do you have on YOUR site on the page(s) in question? And have you checked to find out if the majority is duplicated? That's where the focus needs to be.

Country Code Top Level Domains & Duplicate Content
Hi looking to launch in a new market, currently we have a .com.au domain which is geo-targeted to Australia. We want to launch in New Zealand which is ends with .co.nz If i duplicate the Australian based site completely on the new .co.nz domain name, would i face duplicate content issues from a SEO standpoint?

Even though it's on a completely separate country code. Or is it still advised tosetup hreflang tag across both of the domains? Cheers.0 -
Internal Duplicate Content - Classifieds (Panda)
I've been wondering for a while now, how Google treats internal duplicate content within classified sites. It's quite a big issue, with customers creating their ads twice.. I'd guess to avoid the price of renewing, or perhaps to put themselves back to the top of the results. Out of 10,000 pages crawled and tested, 250 (2.5%) were duplicate adverts. Similarly, in terms of the search results pages, where the site structure allows the same advert(s) to appear under several unique URLs. A prime example would be in this example. Notice, on this page we have already filtered down to 1 result, but the left hand side filters all return that same 1 advert. Using tools like Siteliner and Moz Analytics just highlights these as urgent high priority issues, but I've always been sceptical. On a large scale, would this count as Panda food in your opinion, or does Google understand the nature of classifieds is different, and treat it as such? Appreciate thoughts. Thanks.

How bad is duplicate content for ecommerce sites?
We have multiple eCommerce sites which not only share products across domains but also across categories within a single domain. Examples: http://www.artisancraftedhome.com/sinks-tubs/kitchen-sinks/two-tone-sinks/medium-rounded-front-farmhouse-sink-two-tone-scroll http://www.coppersinksonline.com/copper-kitchen-and-farmhouse-sinks/two-tone-kitchen-farmhouse-sinks/medium-rounded-front-farmhouse-sink-two-tone-scroll http://www.coppersinksonline.com/copper-sinks-on-sale/medium-rounded-front-farmhouse-sink-two-tone-scroll We have selected canonical links for each domain but I need to know if this practice is having a negative impact on my SEO.

Galleries and duplicate content
Hi! I am now studing a website, and I have detected that they are maybe generating duplicate content because of image galleries. When they want to show details of some of their products, they link to a gallery url
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | teconsite
something like this www.domain.com/en/gallery/slide/101 where you can find the logotype, a full image and a small description. There is a next and a prev button over the slider. The next goes to the next picture www.domain.com/en/gallery/slide/102 and so on. But the next picture is in a different URL!!!! The problem is that they are generating lots of urls with very thin content inside.
The pictures have very good resolution, and they are perfect for google images searchers, so we don't want to use the noindex tag. I thought that maybe it would be best to work with a single url with the whole gallery inside it (for example, the 6 pictures working with a slideshow in the same url ), but as the pictures are very big, the page weight would be greater than 7 Mb. If we keep the pictures working that way (different urls per picture), we will be generating duplicate content each time they want to create a gallery. What is your recommendation? Thank you!0 -

Duplicate content for hotel websites - the usual nightmare? is there any solution other than producing unique content?
Hiya Mozzers I often work for hotels. A common scenario is the hotel / resort has worked with their Property Management System to distribute their booking availability around the web... to third party booking sites - with the inventory goes duplicate page descriptions sent to these "partner" websites. I was just checking duplication on a room description - 20 loads of duplicate descriptions for that page alone - there are 200 rooms - so I'm probably looking at 4,000 loads of duplicate content that need rewriting to prevent duplicate content penalties, which will cost a huge amount of money. Is there any other solution? Perhaps ask booking sites to block relevant pages from search engines?

How to Remove Joomla Canonical and Duplicate Page Content
I've attempted to follow advice from the Q&A section. Currently on the site www.cherrycreekspine.com, I've edited the .htaccess file to help with 301s - all pages redirect to www.cherrycreekspine.com. Secondly, I'd added the canonical statement in the header of the web pages. I have cut the Duplicate Page Content in half ... now I have a remaining 40 pages to fix up. This is my practice site to try and understand what SEOmoz can do for me. I've looked at some of your videos on Youtube ... I feel like I'm scrambling around to the Q&A and the internet to understand this product. I'm reading the beginners guide.... any other resources would be helpful.

What is the best way to allow content to be used on other sites for syndication without taking the chance of duplicate content filters
Cookstr appears to be syndicating content to shape.com and mensfitness.com a) They integrate their data into partner sites with an attribution back to their site and skinned it with the partners look. b) they link the image back to their image hosted on cookstr c) The page does not have microformats or as much data as their own page does so their own page is better SEO. Is this the best strategy or is there something better they could be doing to safely allow others to use our content, we don't want to share the content if we're going to get hit for a duplicate content filter or have another site out rank us with our own data. Thanks for your help in advance! their original content page: http://www.cookstr.com/recipes/sauteacuteed-escarole-with-pancetta their syndicated content pages: http://www.shape.com/healthy-eating/healthy-recipes/recipe/sauteacuteed-escarole-with-pancetta
