Making sense of MLB.com domain structure

Although the subject of subdomains has been discussed quite often on these boards, I never found a clear answer to something I am pondering.
I am about to launch a network of 8 to 10 related sites - all sharing a the same concept, layout, etc. but each site possessing unique content. My concept will be somewhat similar to how MLB.com (Major League Baseball) is set up. Each of the 30 teams in the league has it's unique content as a subdomain. My goal in the initial research was to try to find the answer to this question - **"Do the subdomains of a network contribute any increased value to the Root Domain? **
As I was trying to find the answer to my question and analyzing how MLB.com did it, I began to notice some structure that made very little sense to me and am hoping an expert can explain why they are doing it the way they are.
Let me try to illustrate:
Root Domain = http://mlb.com (actually redirects to: http://mlb.mlb.com/index.jsp)
This root domain serves universal content that appeals to all fans of the league and also as a portal to the other subdomains from the main navigation.
SubDomain Example = http://tampabay.rays.mlb.com/index.jsp
**Already there are a couple of questions. **
1. Why does MLB.com redirect to http://mlb.mlb.com/index.jsp ? - why the mlb subdomain?
2. - Why two subdomains for tampabay.rays.mlb.com/index.jsp.? Why not just make the subdomain "tampabayrays", "newyorkmets", "newyorkyankees" etc.
**Here is where things get a little more complicated and confusing for me. **
From the home page, if I click on an article about the San Francisco Giants, I was half expecting to be led to content hosted from the http://sanfrancisco.giants.mlb subdomain but instead the URL was:http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20121030&content_id=40129938&vkey=news_mlb&c_id=mlb
I can understand the breakdown of this URL
YMD = Year, Month, Date
Content ID = Identifying the content
VKey = news_MLB (clicked from the "news section found from the mlb subdomain.
c_id=mlb (?)Now, if I go to the San Francisco Giants page, I see a link to the same exact article but the URL is this:
It get's even stranger...when I went to the Chicago Cubs subdomain, the URL to the same exact article does not even link to the general mlb.mlb.com content, instead the URL looks like this:
http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20121030&content_id=40129938&vkey=news_mlb&c_id=mlb
When I looked at the header from the http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com ULR, I could see the OG:URL as: http://sanfrancisco.giants.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20121030&content_id=40129938&vkey=news_sf&c_id=sf but I did not see anything relating to rel=canonical
I am sure there is a logical answer to this as the content management for a site like MLB.COM must be a real challenge. However, it seems that they would have some major issues with duplicate content.
So aside from MLB's complex structure...I am also still searching for the answer to my initial question which is - **"Do the subdomains of a network contribute any increased value to the Root Domain?" For example, does http://tampabay.rays.mlb.com/index.jsp bring value to http://mlb.com? And what if the subdomain is marketed as http://raysbaseball.com and then redirected to the subdomain?

Awesome timing! Thank you for referring me to that link. That definitely makes me a little more comfortable with my original intentions. At the end of the day, it seems that in our case, the subdomain will ultimately produce the best user experience and in the end, that is probably what I should be focused on anyway.

Site migration/ CMS/domain site structure change-no access to search console
Hi everyone, We are migrating an old site under a bigger umbrella (our main domain). As mentioned in the title, We'll perform CMS migration, domain change, and site structure change. Now, the major problem is that we can't get into google search console for the old site. The site still has old GA code, so google search console verification using this method is not possible, also there is no way developers will be able to add GTM or edit DNS setting (not to bother you with the reason why). Now, my dilemma is : 1. Do we need access to old search console to notify Google about the domain name change or this could be done from our main site (old site will become a part of) search console 2. We are setting up 301 redirects from old to the new domain (not perfect 1:1 redirect ). Once migration is done does anything else needs to be done with the old domain (it will become obsolete)? 3.The main site, Site-map... Should I create a new sitemap with newly added pages or update the current one. 4. if you have anything else please add:) Thank you!

URL structure with dash or slash
Hi, everyone Basically I am editing my website page's URL for SEO Optimisation and I am not sure which URL structure is best for SEO. The main different is the sign ( dash or slash ) before the product-code. HERE ARE TWO EXAMPLE www.example.com/long-tail-keyword-product-code www.example.com/long-tail-keyword/product-code To get more idea of my page, here is one of the product from my website : http://www.okeus.co.uk/pro_view-3.html My website is selling my own product, as a result the only keyword can be found was the name of the product and I separated different design by different code. Should we host our magazine on a subdomain of E-com site or its own domain?
We host a online fashion magazine on a subdomain of our e-commerce site. Currently we host the blog which is word press based on a subdomain ex: stylemag.xxxxxxx.com First question is are all the links from our blog considered internal links? They do not show in the back links profile. Also would it be better to host this on its own domain? Second question Is my main URL getting credit for the unique content published to the blog on the subdomain and if so is it helping the overall SEO of my website more then if it and the links were hosted on its own wordpress.com

Complementary Domain
Hi guys, I have the following situation I would like some help. Because my client is in Brazil, I will make up fictional names so it's easier to understand. My client is a shoe store whose domain is mangabeira.com. That is the brand name and will always be the main domain and reference of the website. We were offered the domain shoes.com. There is no intention of changing the brand name or anything, but there would be a redirect that would send the user who to mangabeira.com. My question is how much impact would that complementary domain do to my SEO performance and how that redirect must be handled. Thanks.

Is it safe to 301 redirect old domain to new domain after a manual unnatural links penalty?
I have recently taken on a client that has been manually penalised for spammy link building by two previous SEOs. Having just read this excellent discussion, http://www.seomoz.org/blog/lifting-a-manual-penalty-given-by-google-personal-experience I am weighing up the odds of whether it's better to cut losses and recommend moving domains. I had thought under these circumstances it was important not to 301 the old domain to the new domain but the author (Lewis Sellers) comments on 3/4/13 that he is aware of forwards having been implemented without transferring the penalty to the new domain. http://www.seomoz.org/blog/lifting-a-manual-penalty-given-by-google-personal-experience#jtc216689 Is it safe to 301? What's the latest thinking?

URL Structure for Directory Site
We have a directory that we're building and we're not sure if we should try to make each page an extension of the root domain or utilize sub-directories as users narrow down their selection. What is the best practice here for maximizing your SERP authority? Choice #1 - Hyphenated Architecture (no sub-folders): State Page /state/ City Page /city-state/ Business Page /business-city-state/

What to do with keyword specific domains
I have a few domain names with the keywords I'm trying to target for my website. My website currently has been in operations for a couple years, and while not hugely authoritative, has built some value. Now, are these domain names with keywords any use to me? Is there any point to forward them to my site? Do I try to build up a page (or a few of content) and then have a link to my main site? Any insight would be mucho appreciated! Thanks!
