Should I bother disavowing nofollow backlinks?
-
Hello!
I am about to go through the list of backlinks in our profile and sort out what we want to disavow. A question I had is, should I both disavowing nofollow backlinks, even if they look spammy? Or should I just focus on cleaning up the dofollow's?
Thanks!

Some great responses here and although I agree with contacting webmasters first and requesting manual removal of links, I think its good to mention what to do if you are hit with a negative SEO blast where all the new links are from spammy blog networks and de-indexed domains etc where conveniently, there are no contact details on site or with WHOIS.
In this case, its probably better going down the disavow route using caution and common sense before submitting final disavow file.

Actually, the Rmoov tool is great for automatically pulling WHOIS data and managing the email process.
It is important to understand Rmoov is a tool for 1 part of the process. You still need to compile a comprehensive list of all your site's links, and then carefully identify those links. Rmoov is designed to automate a portion of the webmaster outreach phase, but there is still manual work to be done as well.

Great point Ryan, the WHOIS lookup is a perfect tool to start your manual removal process.
Ryan, here is a link to GoDaddy's WHOIS search: http://who.godaddy.com/whoischeck.aspx

Thanks for the responses guys. I understand the disavow tool is supposed to be a last resort and I really think we're there. We were hit with penguin and have done anything possible to date to recover our rankings and have gotten no where.
I am going to compile a list of links I think need to be removed and then I might find someone who offers a service to review them.
Thanks!

Both Luis and MJ are correct.
Should I bother disavowing nofollow backlinks?
No. You also do not need to disavow any links which are 302 redirected to your site.
The Disavow tool is only to be used as a very last resort. There seems to be a lot of confused webmasters who have a difficult time accepting this idea.
As MJ shared, you need to make every effort to remove the links first. Webmasters should be contacted via their WHOIS email address, any email address found on the website, and their Contact Form (if available) prior to using the Disavow tool.

Since the disavow tool basically tells Google to nofollow the links, I would recommend first focusing on the bad dofollow links in your back link profile.
Also, as a fist measure, I would not use the Google disavow tool. Instead, I would reach out to all of the websites containing bad dofollow links and request them to be removed. I would give each link at least three attempts before considering the disavow tool.
I suggest manual attempts before using the disavow tool because using the disavow tool is basically like telling on yourself. Your are turning your website into Google for having a spamming back link profile. I do realize that the disavow tool is a much better option then getting hit with a penalty, but I am a fan of at least trying to take care of it yourself before turning a website over to the mercy of Google.

I think this tool puts the nofollow attribute so would not need to use it in that kind of link.

Google Disavow File Format and MOZ Spam Score Updates
Hi, Is there a defined file format for Google disavow file name? Does it has to be disavowlinks.txt or can we do this like domain-name-date.txt ? Also, since Google does not share their data with Moz, how does MOz updates its spam score after we disavow the bad links? Do we need to connect Google search console with Moz?

Disavow backlinks
Is there any benefit in requesting manual removal over using the Google disavow file? Or is it just extra work for little result. I.e. is it better to just disavow straightaway and not mess around? Thanks

Submitted a Disavow BUT can't send in a RECONSIDERATION, WHY?
Hi Community! 2 weeks ago, i sent in our first/HUGE disavow list to Google. Out of the 2700 domains we submitted, 1300 of them we successfully removed, but we have nothing to show Google. Reason is because on our reconsideration request page, we can't submit anything because we didn't receive a message from Google (please see screenshot). I know for a FACT we got hit by an ALGORITHM penalty back in March2013. So, I have this wonderful Gdoc to prove that we worked LONG AND HARD to add and remove links in the past year, but we can't seem to message Google and tell them our story on why we should be reconsidered. How do we tell Google our success of removals? It's been 2 weeks, how much longer until we see a change in traffic? Or do we have to wait for the next update of algorithms by google aka REFRESH to see a change? Let me know and thank you so much in advance! Shawn cYGKLVR

Will Nofollow in Nav Cause a Problem?
I have seen conflicting information regarding the use of rel=nofollow on internal links, but the gist of it seems to be that it's not a good idea. The top linked page on a particular site is a consultation page. Contact is not far behind. Both are linked from the header and footer or sidebar. At first, I thought no-following them would be the perfect solution. After what I've read, it seems I need to remove some of the instances of linking instead of nofollowing. Any e firsthand experience or feedback?

Incoming affiliate links: is it better to follow or nofollow?
Hello here, this question is from a merchant stand point, and here is a typical scenario: this merchant has thousand of affiliate incoming links. Affiliates link to specific product pages with their affiliate ID passed as a parameter as: http://www.merchantsite.com/products/product_page/?affid=[affiliate_id] and users get 301 redirected to a clean URL like: http://www.merchantsite.com/products/product_page/ after that a cookie is stored into the user's browser for tracking purposes. Now, my question is the following: is for the merchant more convenient to have its affiliates linking with follow or nofollow links? Is that actually relevant? What are the pros and cons? Thank you in advance for any insights!

Should I remove all rel=nofollow links?
I have a 60 page site that had some nofollow links sprinkled throughout, 50% of which are probably on its mailto: email links. Should I remove all nofollows all in one go, or just the mailto links first, and later the others? Or has anyone had any negative effects in 2012 from this?

I have one another internal page with Patio Umbrellas text link. http://www.vistapatioumbrellas.com/21/patio-umbrellas.html I assume that, Google have confusion to give rank for my keyword during Patio Umbrellas keyword. I want to set NOFOLLOW attribute or NOINDEX FOLLOW meta for this page. Will it help me to rank high for Patio Umbrellas keyword. My ultimate goal is to reduce confusion for Patio Umbrellas keyword.
