Does the root domain hold more power then an inner page?
-
Question,
Lets say a new domain is launched, the root domain and an inner page target the same term.
Google comes along for the first time and indexes the website.
Does it see the target term on the homepage as more important then the inner page because you are putting it on the root?
I get the feeling terms connected directly with the root domain have a better chance of ranking then the term being on a inner page.
Any thoughts on this?
-
yes, this is what I choose to believe because as you know in the dynamic world of SEO, there is no such thing as ultimate answer.
-
So in your example, you believe from the homepage would have a slight benefit over an inner page when it comes to ranking?
-
Ok there has been some kind of confusion regarding my earlier statement. This was what I meant to say – Say a site -
http://www.example.com – main service is website design and the focus is on “Web Design”
http://www.example.com/webdesign.php - service page_Now, let us imagine for a second, we are not building any links. In that case, what I believe and I have observed that home is going to get a bit preference in the SERP. _

As Google starts to factor in user behavior, like CTR, this kind of thing may be even more important. I think it's a very small piece of the ranking puzzle right now, but I'd expect it to grow in the coming years. Google wants to rank the page that best answers the question, ultimately.
-
This is a very complex issue, but I think Jonathan's summed it up pretty well. Generally, home pages collect a lot of the "mass" of inbound links, and so they can overpower other pages. On the other hand, deep pages are easier to target to specific keywords and sometimes have targeted anchor text. I've seen cases where someone wanted the home-page to rank, but a deep page was ranking, and I've seen the opposite.
Rand wrote about that general problem here:
http://www.seomoz.org/blog/wrong-page-ranking-in-the-results-6-common-causes-5-solutions
While it's not exactly what you're asking, it covers the general logic of why one page might win over another.
-
I would say no, importance is related more to the content then the fact of a page being a home page or no.
I would even think that for stuff like keyword in url, an internal page could be much better to optimize then the homepage. The homepage should give an overall picture to describe your enterprise. main keyword here would be your branding keywords to make sure you're first for your brand name.
I would then use internal pages for better optimization of the text, and SEO for the various terms. This way your page would be about the term rather then just mentioning the term - should be more relevant to the user / reader.
-
Think of it this way - if you're a user, and you want to find out info about this page, what is the best page for you to land on? If it's a specific keyword relevant to a deep page full of content, then you'd want Google to target your inner page. If it's a general term, maybe your best page is the home page.
Take one example - electronic cigarettes.
If someone searches electronic cigarettes, then that's the head term, and pretty generic - there's lots of relevant subtopics - so you'd think the main page should be your home page. But if someone searches electronic cigarettes quit smoking, an inner page relevant to the uses and scientific proof / lack thereof about using ecigs to quit smoking would be more relevant.
Bottom line - Keep the user in mind when doing keyword targeting, and think what the best page for you to display the keyword would be.
-
Cheers,
But what I mean is if you forget about links for a moment, lets just say the website has no links coming in.
Does Google think your target term is more important if it's in the homepage title tag rather then an inner page title tag?
You could think if a website has this term on it's root domain it must be one of, if not the most important term this website wants to rank for.
-
_Definitely home page carries the most SEO weight. And what I believe is that chances are that home page of a website will has the maximum chances of earning links than internal pages unless you are offering some cool stuffs in the Internal pages. If you ask my opinion, I would be targeting the most competitive term in the Home page rather than an internal page. _
-
I think what they're talking about is possibly duplicate content. Meaning that you might have a title tag something similar to that where you stating that you have named let's say for example Domain example.com and your title tag is "tag1". Then you have an additional webpage that is not your homepage stating that he .example.com/tag1 The title tag of "tag1" webpage.com
-
Yes and no;
The root domain usually tends to get far more links then your inner pages, as any links about your website / brand usually come in here. Should you target keywords on the root; it would benefit from having the increased in-links.
The result would then depend on the level of on-page optimization that you are able to do on the home-page or internal page. Usually on internal pages you can control far more the content and thus make better on-page optimizations, should the levels of optimization be more or less the same I would safely assume that your home page (root) would take prominence.

How do the powerful links of an old domain help my new domain?
I recently purchased a domain with over twenty years age, a few .gov links and A LOT of .edu links. Of course, the domain is relevant to my site's content. I'm hosting the domain on my shared server and have setup 301 redirects for each page that had external links pointing to it via the htaccess file within the domain's root directory. These 301 redirects, of course, point to my new domain, which is on a dedicated server. Specifically, they point to a directory on my new domain. I've also verified the purchased domain and my new domain on Google Search Console/Webmaster Tools. Finally, I've completed a google site change request for the old site to point to my new site. My questions: Should I also list my old domain on the dedicated server over the shared server or does it matter? Will the backlinks of the old site show up in my new site's links via Google's search console, Open Site Explorer, etc.? Will the backlinks of the old site improve the authority of my domain? Also, keep in mind that I have the 301 redirects pointing to a directory on my new site, not the root page of the new domain. Will the backlinks of the old site help my new domain's authority? In the eyes of Moz I've read, NO. I understand it's just a MOZ metric but from what I understand it also correlates with Google's actual 'authority' metric/method of giving value to a particular domain over another based on the backlinks. How exactly do the backlinks of the old domain benefit my new domain and is there a way to measure this/see the relationship? Thank you for any help you're willing to give!

Page not Ranking I feel helpless!
Hi there 🙂 I have been working at SEO for quite some time and I am such a noob. I have even done an online course. I am at my wits end. My website is https://www.urbani.com.au. I changed to https about 1 month ago. I want to rank for "outdoor furniture perth". Recently my homepage has stopped ranking for this keyword, and a useless blog page started ranking instead (www.urbani.com.au/tag/outdoor-furniture-perth/), on page 5 of google. I got rid of that page and redirected it to my homepage. Do you know what the problem is? Why won't google rank my homepage for "outdoor furniture perth"? It is ranking for "outdoor wicker furniture perth", but for "outdoor furniture perth" it has disappeared from the face of this earth. Thank you so much, if I can get help for this it would save my business! Whitney

Bad Links to New Domain - Do I Disavow?
About 2 months ago a new client of mine bought a domain and we built him a nice new site; however, it appears the previous owner of the domain used some spammy SEO tactics. I've had to redirect about 30 pages and now I've found some spammy links. I've only discovered a few of them, but he doesn't have that many links yet so I'm wondering what kind of impact this will have. Is it worth disavowing a half dozen links? The sites are in Chinese and appear to be unmanaged link farms so getting the webmaster to remove them is unlikely. Also wondering what else is lurking out there that I haven't discovered yet... I suggested to the client we consider a different domain since the site is new, but he's become pretty attached to it. Any ideas?

Landing pages rank higher thank home page
Ive been tasked to work on several sites from a client that had some shady past seo work done for them. Weak content, tons of useless links all pointing to home page, etc. Ive gone through site and given a total re-write and worked on removing and dissavowing links. Majority of the sites home page ranked high on first page google. Now the sites are closer to 100 rank than first page, and the odd thing is that home page cant be found but pages like terms and conditions or disclaimer are ranking. These pages have hardly no content compared to home pages, and while they are still ranked 80 to 100 positions back they are ranking while the home page cant be found. We have tried changing anchor text to "click here", and "for more info" instead of keyword and nothing much changed yet. Competition still has pretty much keyword anchor text and worthless links and they still rank well. Am I wasting time with rewrites and link dissavows or should I continue and eventually get the sites home page to come back on the radar? We have added social media presence and a blog that we post to regularly and for 6 months of work have hardly seen a dent for improved rankings. Am I on the right page or spinning my wheels? Any advise is appreciated.

Pagerank and combining pages
I have a site where my homepage is a PR3. My main menu contains 6 links which are all PR1's. Example: Homepage, link1,link2,link3,link4,link5,link6 I have figured a way to make things easier for my users by combining 3 of those 6 links to my home page. So basically link1,link2 and link4 will now point to my homepage where it will contain the content and tools all in one. I will do the proper redirects on those links to point to my homepage again so google knows I moved them. My question is by moving 3 PR1 pages to my home page which is a PR3 will this increase my pagerank for my home page?

301 Redirect Domains with old links
I came across a nice discovery of about 20 old domain names that each have many root domains and a bit of DA. I want to know the best way to utilize them without any type of penalty. Currently, (as of an hour ago) I am 301 redirecting all of them to the most relative pages on a single domain. Will i get the majority of the link juice from the domains? I'm excited to see what will happen here. Thanks in advance, Daniel

Will building up the page rank of a page you have a inbound link bring any benefit?
Right then here we go You have a link in an article on a well known national newspaper site that points at your website. Is there any benefit of linking to the newspaper article in order to build up the PR of the article page and therefore passing over some link "juice"? Sub questions 1. Would it be more beneficial simply to gain links to your main website? 2. What are the chances of the article going into the archives and then at some stage being deleted? 3. If the article link points to a domain, which then forwards to a another domain will this pass on any "juice"? 4. If the article points to a domain that then 301's to another domain will this pass on any "juice"? 5. Does Google simply register the link and "juice" on the first pass or will it revisit and upgrade the "juice"? 6. What are the negatives? 7. What are the positives?
