ECommerce Products substantially similar but with important differences?

Hi eCommerce gurus,
We sell a number of products, electrical in nature where the unit is from a group (sub-model is probably a good description) but each has important different physical properties. An example description is:
#1 Clipsal C-Bus Wireless Plug Adapter 1 Channel Leading Edge Dimmer, 3A
C-Bus Wireless Plug Adaptors allow mains GPO operated equipment to be controlled as part of a C-Bus Wireless network. The buttons on a C-Bus Wireless Plug Adaptor are able to control a load connected directly to the unit and control loads connected to other C-Bus Wireless units. Also, buttons on C-Bus Wireless Wall Switches can control a load connected to a Plug Adaptor.Each button can be programmed to function as an on/off, dimmer or scene control, as well as a number of other options.
The other 2 in this group are:
#2 Clipsal C-Bus Wireless Plug Adapter 1 Channel Trailing Edge Dimmer, 2A
#3 Clipsal C-Bus Wireless Plug Adapter 1 Channel Relay, 10A
but the item description details are really the same as #1.
This trips Roger's duplicate content error and so probably Google's as well.
I can consolidate into one product with 'options' but then can't list the three products discretely on Google shopping etc, and currently the 'Category' is a much wider 'Wireless Automation Products' which I don't really want to sub-categorise into 'C-Bus Wireless Plug Adapters' with three items in it making it harder for people to find.
I can 'Spin' the description but this seem stupid and even more so for other items I have that have 12 different derivations of the same basic product
Any Suggestions?

Thanks for that answer, unfortunately what I expected. I am currently just rel=canonical-ing to one of the items like the good ol' Google 'Green T Shirt' example.
If I reduce the item detail to the differences between the items, it then becomes 'thin content' in the template, so it's bad both directions. Looks like 'Spun' individual item descriptions seems the preferred method, but there is only so much you can say about what is essentially the same unit with just different types of output controller but otherwise with identical features. IMHO a situation many will have that Google just doesn't understand (or perhaps want to understand ).

I'm afraid it will have to be a case of one or the other - either create unique content for the pages or consolidate them into one listing.
You've nailed the reasons already, so I'll offer a bit of advice into making the decision of which option to choose. I'd look at your analytics data and see how many times those individual product pages have had users entering the website from them, which you could also break down further to see which users have entered via google shopping.
If there's a substantial amount that you believe has led to conversions, then unique content might be the way forward. If not, then I don't think it losing the other two listings from Google shopping would be much of a sacrifice.

Combining Two Sites With Similar Domain Authority
Hello, We run two sites with the same product, product descriptions and url structure. Essentially, the two sites are the same except for domain name and minor differences on the home pages. We've run this way for quite a few years. Both sites have a domain authority of 48 and there are not a large number of duplicate incoming links. I understand the "book" to say we should combine the sites with 301's to the similar pages. I am concerned about doing this because "site 2" still does about 20% of our business. We have been losing organic traffic for a number of years. I think this mainly has to do with a more competitive environment. However, where google used to serve both our sites for a search term it now will only show one. How much organic benefit should we see if we combine. Will it be significant enough to merge the two sites. Understandably, I realize the future can't be predicted but I would like to know if anyone has had a similar experience or opinion Thanks

Importance of Unique Content Location in Source Code
How much does Google value placement of unique content in the source code vs where it is visually displayed? I have a case where my unqiue content visually displays high on page for the user, but in the source code the unique quality content is below duplicate type content that appear across many other domains (think e-commerce category thumbs on left side of screen and 80% right side of screen unique stuff). I have the impression I am at a disadvantage because these pages have the unique / quality content lower in source code. Any thoughts on this?

Different rankings for same keyword in different geo locations
I am listed at # 11 in google.com.pk for a same keyword but listed 4th when I use &gl=us in the same query or use a US ip address. Could this be because google's recent update and maybe they are taking time to push the update towards other countries or something else? In any case I see decent rankings when I use the query in google.com or when I use gl=us, but lower quality results in google.com.pk so please guide what is going on. Thanks in advance for guidance (y)

Furniture company with 1 website or a few different ones?
Hello everyone. We are a furniture company, selling sofas, mattress, outdoor furniture, many BBQ's in the future - Separate things, but all related in a way. I was thinking it would make us look like an 'authority' to have a separate website for everything and be more specialised and also look more specialised. What would be better for SEO?? Also (sneeking in a second question!), I have around 50 sofa designs - is it ok if the Meta description is the same for each one or should I change a word or 2 around? Many thanks!!

Duplicate content on yearly product models.
TL;DR - Is creating a page that has 80% of duplicated content from the past year's product model where 20% is about the new model changes going to be detrimental to duplicate content issues. Is there a better way to update minor yearly model changes and not have duplicated content? Full Question - We create landing pages for yearly products. Some years the models change drastically and other years there are only a few minor changes. The years where the product features change significantly is not an issue, it's when there isn't much of a change to the product description & I want to still rank on the new year searches. Since I don't want duplicate content by just adding the last year's model content to a new page and just changing the year (2013 to 2014) because there isn't much change with the model, I thought perhaps we could write a small paragraph describing the changes & then including the last year's description of the product. Since 80% of the content on the page will be duplicated from the last year's model, how detrimental do you think this would be for a duplicate content issue? The reason I'm leaving the old model up is to maintain the authority that page has and to still rank on the old model which is still sold. Does anyone else have any other better idea other than re-writing the same information over again in a different way with the few minor changes to the product added in.

Outreach to bloggers for product reviews. All at once or stretched over time?
We have identified about 150 bloggers in our niche worldwide and want to send them a free product sample for a review on their blog. From former similar promotion we know that actually the vast majority will accept. Would you send the proposal at once to all bloggers or just contact lets say 5 per week over 6 months? Do you think it is better to vary the products to be reviewed instead of sending all the exact same product model? Not sure how bloggers will like it if they notice that we made the same proposal to every blogger and that on all blogs in our niche about the same time suddenly reviews of same products appear? Any thoughts?

Two Sites Similar content?
I just started working at this company last month. We started to add new content to pages like http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/t/49/-/181/1137/Bridgestone-Motorcycle-Tires. This is their main site. Then i realized it also put the new content on their sister site http://www.jakewilson.com/t/52/-/343/1137/Bridgestone-Motorcycle-Tires. the first site is the main site and I think will get credit for the unique new content. The second one I do not think will get credit and will more than likely be counted as duplicate content. We are changing this so it will no longer be the same. However, I am curious to see ways people think we could fix this issues? Also is it effecting both sits for just the second one?

Rich Snippits - Product Data showing in serps
Google "halloween costumes", see the yandy listing that shows product data and pricing under their listing? How did they do this? I realize its a rich snippit of some kind but i don't see in the code how or where this is. I've yet to see anyone but Amazon influence the SERPS yet with rich snippits. Pretty interesting
