Wordpress Categories and Over-Optimization Question
-
I would like to switch my sidebar from listing Category Name with posts listed below each- to a concise custom menu.
This custom menu would list the top three products I am promoting first, and then go on to list the categories on my site.
Currently it looks like this (but with 6 categories, with between 7-10 items in each - this is on EVERY page)
Widgets
-Green Widget
-Blue WidgetGidwets
-Big Gidwet
-Small GidwetI rank well in google right now, but I am concerned that changing my sidebar will result in a penalty. Maybe for over-optimizing my top three products I promote, or possibly for trying to control the flow of link juice.
Can anyone chime in here who has adjusted their site structure within wordpress, and tell me what you found worked best? ** Before anyone asks**, this structure does work much better for the user. My sidebar now is massive, and is confusing even to me.

Never tried exactly what you are asking but with wordpress website i usually apply simple rules that are best from user as well as from SEO perspective...
- Never Confuse!
Let’s not get your visitor confused when visiting your website or else you will witness a good amount of bounce rate increase on your website. If you think adding a category will make the side bar more confusing then try to avoid it because this will impact your SEO as well as user reaction on the website is one of the important SEO factor.
2. Over Optimization
I have witness quite a few examples of over optimization and honestly speaking over optimization is simply addition of similar content and keywords again and again on the page that does not make any sense but if adding a word around 4 to 5 times and its making sense with the content then i think it won’t be counter as over optimization of keywords on the page...
3. Always think about Visitors
Think for visitors and search engine will follow you! This sounds ironic but true as visitors are the end point and as search engine is changing on frequent basis it is more bent towards how users (visitors) think and react to different designs, websites, niches and how much time it spend on each page.
I think not with this particular problem but with very on-page problem you should focus more on users (visitors) instead of search engine bots only.

De-indexing and SSL question
Few days ago Google indexed hundreds of my directories by mistake (error with plugins/host), my traffic dropped as a consequence. Anyway I fixed that and submitted a URL removal request. Now just waiting things to go back to normality. Meantime I was supposed to move my website to HTTPS this week. Question: Should I wait until this indexing error has been fixed or I may as well go ahead with the SSL move?

Questionable Referral Traffic
Hey SEOMozers, I'm working with a client that has a suspicious traffic pattern going on. In October, a referral domain called profitclicking.com started passing visits to the site. Almost, in parallel the overall visits decreased anywhere from 35 to 50%. After checking out profitclicking.com more, it promises more traffic "with no SEO knowledge". The client doesn't think that this service was signed up for internally. Regardless, it obviously smells pretty fishy, and I'm searching for a way I can disallow traffic from this site. Could I simply just write a simple disallow statement in the robots.txt and be done with it? Just wanted to see if anyone else had any other ideas before recommending a solution. Thanks!

Wordpress Archive pages
In the SEOMOZ site report a number of errors were found. One of which was no or duplicate meta desctions on certain blog pages. When I drilled down to find these i noticed thosepages are the wordpress autocreated archive pages. When I searched for these through the wordpress control panel through both pages and blogs they were nowhere to be found. Does anyone know how to find these pages or are they not something I need to worry about?

Wordpress categories causing too many links/duplicate content?
I've just added categories to my wordpress site and some of the posts show in several of the categories. Will this cause me duplicate content problems as I want the category pages to be indexed? Also as I add more categories I'm creating more links on the page. They can't be seen to the user as I have a plugin that creates drop down categories. When I go to 'view source' though all the links are there so google will see lots of links. How can I fix the too many links problem? And should I worry about duplicate content issue?

Questions about root domain setup
Hi There, I'm a recent addition to SEOmoz and over the past few weeks I've been trying to figure things out. This whole SEO process has been a bit of a brain burner but its slowly becoming a little more clearer. For awhile I noticed that I was unable to get Open Site Explorer to display information about my site. It mentioned that that there was not enough data for the URL. Too recent of a site, no links, etc. Eventually I changed the the URL to include "www." and it pulled up results. I also noticed that a few of my page warnings are because of duplicate page content. One page will be listed as http://enbphotos.com. The other will be listed as http://www.enbphotos.com. I guess I'm not sure what this all means and how to change it. I'm also not really sure what the terminology even is and something regarding root domain seemed appropriate but I'm not sure if it is accurate. Any help/suggestions/links would be appreciated! Thanks, Chris
