My sitemap in Google is coming back with an error
-
I submitted my xml sitemap to Google Webmaster tools. It is giving an error, not found. 404 Error. But I can't figure out why my site map is signaling a 404. Why?
-
It's always a good idea to include the directive in the robots.txt anyway, Courtney, so I'd say yes.
If typing the address in your browser works, but putting in that exact same address in GWT results in 404, then I'm stumped. Only thing i can figure is your WMT is experiencing a glitch and you might want o report it in the Google Webmaster forums.
If you want to send the site URL by personal message here I can take a last look.

The address does work in typed into the browser. And I did use an installed plugin to create the sitemap.
So if the address works, do you think my next step is to add the robots.txt?

Just because your site has a sitemap doesn't mean it's guaranteed to be located at www/yoursite.com/sitemap.xml, Courteney. What happens when you actually type www.yoursite.com/sitemap.xml in your browser's address bar? I'm betting you'll get a 404, which means your sitemap isn't located/named what you think it is.
Many WordPress plugins that automatically create xml sitemaps don't put them in the expected standard location with the standard file name! For example, Yoast's WordPress SEO plugin creates its xml sitemap at www.yourdomain.com/sitemap_index.xml. It looks close, but its not the same.
Double check the sitemap plugin you're using to confirm where it's writing the xml file and then use that address to submit it to both Google and Bing Webmaster Tools.
It's also best practice to add a directive to the robots.txt file at the root of your site pointing to the correct sitemap.xml location as well. Just add this line at the bottom:
Sitemap: http://www.yoursite.com/actualsitemapfilename.xml
That address'll be the same one that you were able to successfully submit to GWT.
Does all that make sense?
Paul
P.S. One extra thought, since you mention that this is your first WordPress build. WP doesn't automatically create an xml sitemap for you - you'll have to have installed a plugin or used a 3rd-party tool to do that for you. Sorry if that's obvious to you, but wanted to cover all the bases

I agree if the page is live in your browser (xml version) then Google should be able to crawl it.

Hi Courtney,
Are you suggesting that the sitemap itself is 404ing OR webmasters is in indicating your site has 404's of page that exist on your sitemap?
If it's the sitemap itself, can you navigate to it directly? Does it render in a browser?
If it's an error from a page on the sitemap, and the page currently renders there is a good chance it didn't at some stage. If that's the case you can ask google to recrawl it as an individual page, see;

Hope this helps.

It is the .xml. Any other ideas? Totally stuck....(first wordpress site I have built)
-
You have to submit the .XML version and it has to be live in your directory on your server.
on our site ie:
The page for users: http://www.boastingbiz.com/sitemap
The page for the Spiders: http://www.boastingbiz.com/sitemap.xml <--- Submit the .xml from wherever you place it on your server.
hope this helps.

Page disappeared from Google index. Google cache shows page is being redirected.
My URL is: http://shop.nordstrom.com/c/converse Hi. The week before last, my top Converse page went missing from the Google index. When I "fetch as Googlebot" I am able to get the page and "submit" it to the index. I have done this several times and still cannot get the page to show up. When I look at the Google cache of the page, it comes up with a different page. http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:http://shop.nordstrom.com/c/converse shows: http://shop.nordstrom.com/c/pop-in-olivia-kim Back story: As far as I know we have never redirected the Converse page to the Pop-In page. However the reverse may be true. We ran a Converse based Pop-In campaign but that used the Converse page and not the regular Pop-In page. Though the page comes back with a 200 status, it looks like Google thinks the page is being redirected. We were ranking #4 for "converse" - monthly searches = 550,000. My SEO traffic for the page has tanked since it has gone missing. Any help would be much appreciated. Stephan

How to rank in Google Places
Normally, I don't have a problem with local SEO (more of a multi-channel sort of online marketing guy) but this one has got me scratching my head. Look at https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=wedding+venues+in+essex Theres two websites there (fennes and quendon park) that both have a much more powerful DA but don't appear in the Google Places (Google + Business or whatever it's labeled as). Why are websites such as Boreham house ranking top in the map listings? Quendon Park has a Google places listing, it's full of content, the NAP all matches up. Its a stronger website. Boreham House isn't any closer to the centroid than Quendon Park Just got me struggling this one

Google Places, Google Plus, Oh my!
Ok - So I am in the position to try and clean up the current Google places nightmare for a company. Right now there is about 3 or 4 different google places listings for them that they have no control over. So here is what I did: 1. I took control of them all by verifying via phone and confirmed all of them. 2. I suspended all the listings but 1 3. I edited the one listing to be accurate and complete.

Then I waited, and waited... A month later, the old listings are still up and none of the changes to the one listing have been made. Today it gets a bit more complicated. Today I created a Google+ page for the business which seems like it may end up adding yet ANOTHER Google Places listing, is that correct? They are sending a post card to verify, but I have the page all set up ready to go and plan on tying it to the website. I am not exactly sure what my specific question is, but I am looking for any advice anyone has on the best way to go about this situation. Thank you in advance!0 -

Not ranking on Google
Hi all, I am optimising a site which is a hotel directory for a small island in the Mediterranean - Malta. The site is www.maltahotelsonline.com. I did a keyword research and optimised the page. However I am now at link building stage. Since we do not have many links the site is still not ranking very well for the desired keywords (ranking fine on Bing and Yahoo yet not on Google). As a result there isn't much traffic on the site. 1. Is there any particular issue that you can spot on this site that is not allowing it to rank well on Google? 2. Any suggestions on link-building please?
