What are the best ways to fix 404 errors?
-
I recently changed the url of my main blog and now have about 100 404 errors. I did a redirect from the old url to the new one however still have errors.
1. Should I do a 301 redirect from each old blog post url to the new blog post url?
2. Should I just delete the old blog post (url) and rewrite the blog post?
I"m not concerned about links to the old posts as a lot of them do not have many links.

Thanks Andy. I made this change........domain.com/blue-blog to domain.com/blog using a rewriterule. It seemed to work.

I did change the structure domain.com/blue-blog to domain.com/blog. So I did a rewrite rule in the .htaccess file. That fixed a lot of things however there are still 100 or so 404's. They are old blog posts and not really that important.

As tom says 404 errors are not the end of the world.
if you are concerned then as long as the relative urls have remained the same and the root directory is all that has changes a 301 in bulk should work, though if you've changed categories or something it may not work so well as a single entity and 100 would be the way to go.
Something that you should do, if you've not already, is within webmaster tools make sure you tell Google you've changed your url (configuration > change address) - it also has a mini guide on the steps you should be taking, including to register your new domain on webmaster tools.
But again, as tom says, if it's not destroying the user experience and isn't a huge annoyance for visitors don't worry too much about it.

Just for your reference a full url redirect (aka changing say abc.com to abc.net - moving all directories and urls in one go) would look like
RedirectMatch 301 ^(.*)$ http://www.abc.net

Are we talking about a structural change (i.e. domain.com/blog to domain.com/myblog) or a TLD change (domain.com to domain2.com)? If you kept the same blog structure otherwise, I would write a .htaccess file to make sure you just blanket redirect all URLs. It's easy to do that way but not everyone has access to that.
I recommend 301s just because they avoid the sloppiness problem. I mean, you wrote the content for people to find, right? If they hit a 404 it just frustrates them. It doesn't matter whether or not you need the SEO, I like it when a 301 takes me where I really need to go. it shows someone cared enough to make sure I could get to what they had done. It's a pride of authorship thing.

Hi Nathan
If you're not concerned about passing the links/link equity of the old posts to a new page, or if you don't think there are any users visiting the URL directly, then I would simply leave the page as a 404 error.
404s are a natural part of the course and Google recognises this - check out this webmaster blog post. 100 404s isn't an awful lot, so I wouldn't worry about them unless they're interrupting a user journey (which you'll be able to check in analytics).
If you really want to get rid of them, then a 301 would be the way to go in my opinion. 100 301s will not slow down your .htaccess file by any noticeable margin. But overall, I'd let the 404s be 404s.

Should remove 404 page
Hello, I upload a new website with new web addresses and my current addresses don't work anymore. I don't want to do redirects. Should I just remove the old address from google index using their tool or let google do it on its own. Thank you,

All urls seem to exist (no 404 errors) but they don't.
Hello I am doing a SEO auditing for a website which only has a few pages. I have no cPanel credentials, no FTP no Wordpress admin account, just watching it from the outside. The site works, the Moz crawler didn't report any problem, I can reach every page from the menu. The problem is that - except for the few actual pages - no matter what you type after the domain name, you always reach the home page and don't get any 404 error. I.E. Http://domain.com/oiuxyxyzbpoyob/ (there is no such a page, but i don't get 404 error, the home is displayed and the url in the browser remains Http://domain.com/oiubpoyob/, so it's not a 301 redirect). Http://domain.com/WhatEverYouType/ (same) Could this be an important SEO issue (i.e. resulting in infinite amount of duplicate content pages )? Do you think I should require the owner to prevent this from happening? Should I look into the .htaccess file to fix it ? Thank you Mozers!

What is the best way to take advantage of this keyword?
Hi SEO's! I've been checking out webmaster tools (screenshot attached) and noticed that we're getting loads of long tail searches around a search query 'arterial and venous leg ulcers' - on a side note we're a nursing organisation so excuse the content of the search!!! The trouble is that google is indexing a PDF page which we give out as a freebie:

http://www.nursesfornurses.com.au/admin/uploads/5DifferencesBetweenVenousAndArterialLegUlcers1.pdf This PDF is a couple of years old and needs updating but its got a few links pointing to it. Ok so down to the nitty gritty, we've just launched a blog:
http://news.nursesfornurses.com.au/Nursing-news/ We have a whole wound care category in which this content belongs, and i'm trying to find the best way to take advantage of the search, so I was thinking: Create an article of about 1000 words Update the PDF and re-upload it to the main domain (not the sub domain news.nursesfornurses.com.au) Attach the PDF to the article on the blog OR would it be better to host this on the blog, and setup a 301 redirect to this page? I just need some advice on how best to take advantage of this opportunity, our blog isn't getting much search traffic at the moment (despite having 300+ articles!!) and i'm looking into how we can change that. I look forward to your response and suggestions. Thanks! qtY64B10 -
Best Practices
Okay this would be a piece of cake for most of you out there.. What are the best practices once you add a page or piece of content on your website with a new keyword that you have never used before but plan to use it with every relevant new page you add. How do you ensure that Google will crawl that page? Secondly, if you add the new keyword in the old pieces of content/ pages you have already published by editing the content to suit that keyword, how would you ensure that it gets crawled my Google. Thanks in advance

Best Way to Incorporate FAQs into Every Page - Duplicate Content?
Hi Mozzers, We want to incorporate a 'Dictionary' of terms onto quite a few pages on our site, similar to an FAQ system. The 'Dictionary' has 285 terms in it, with about 1 sentence of content for each one (approximately 5,000 words total). The content is unique to our site and not keyword stuffed, but I am unsure what Google will think about us having all this shared content on these pages. I have a few ideas about how we can build this, but my higher-ups really want the entire dictionary on every page. Thoughts? Image of what we're thinking here - http://screencast.com/t/GkhOktwC4I Thanks!

Best way to migrate to a new URL structure
Hello everyone, We’re changing our URL structure from something like this: example.com/index.php?language=English To something like this: example.com**/english/**index.php The change is implemented with mod_rewrite so all the old URLs can still work We have hundreds of thousands of pages that are currently indexed with the old URL structure What’s the best way to get Google to rapidly update its index and to maintain as much ranking as possible? 301 redirect all the old URLs to the new equivalent format? If we detect that the URL is in an old format, render the page with a canonical tag pointing to the new equivalent format as well as adding a noindex, nofollow tag? Something else? Thanks for your input!
