SEO issues with Magento
-
Hi Everyone,
We use Magento CMS for our site and we are having a frustrating time resolving our SEO issues. The site was very poorly managed in years past and in the past year I have redesigned and cleaned up many things. However we are recently having trouble with indexing and keyword ranking.
Issue #1:
Our main keyword ranking has dropped quite a bit while our other less important keywords have steadily risen. I suspect a very strict robots.txt implemented back in early January may have been the culprit. We have since been modifying it with out much luck. Many of our pages are still blocked.
12/05/12 : ranked 12th
1/09/13: ranked 19th
1/16/13: ranked 35th
Now: out of top 50 (52nd)
Issue #2:
Not a single image is being indexed. We are 0 for 582 according to Webmaster tools. Not sure why...
Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated as I have great determination and interest in learning the correct way to fix/do this.
Site: www.scojo.com
Thanks

Wow, I just spent some time trying to figure the footer links out and it is just a mess! I don't understand what Magento is trying to do but it sure isn't working. Thank you for pointing that out.

Hi Daniel,
Since I was looking
I put the site through Screaming Frog (http://www.screamingfrog.co.uk/seo-spider/) and there are a bunch of 404 errors being shown.
I think it must be the relative links you have in your footer. Weird thing is on chrome they work ok, but in firefox they return a page not found! Not sure if this is related in any way to your rankings drop, but even if just for user experience worth having a look and maybe even hard coding those footer links.
You can see an example if you go to http://www.scojo.com/mens-reading-glasses.html in firefox and then click on any of the left hand footer links to the other categories.
Good luck!

Thanks Lynn,
I see it now. I am not sure how to direct this to the actual image in Magento. I guess I have some investigating/research to do.
-
Hi Daniel,
For the images, if you download your sitemap here: http://www.scojo.com/sitemap/sitemap.xml and then search it for image:imageyou will find them. The first one for example lists this url: http://www.scojo.com/catalog/product/image/size/0x0/c/o/court_1133.jpg.jpg</image:image>
Which is a 404 (not pointing to a 404 page, just returning a 404 not found).
-
Hi Lynn,
At the time the layout hadn't been changed a bit. Most all of our competitors have stayed put and we seem to be the only one effected.
I have checked the sitemap XML but don't see where they are all pointing to the 404 page. Can you direct me to how you found that.
Again, thank you for your help!
-
Hi Daniel,
Maybe something else changed in the weeks prior to this that had an effect, like a template or layout change? Is it just you or have other sites fluctuated in the serps also? You have probably gone through this process, but worth mentioning since the robots.txt itself doesn't look very suspicious.
As for the image indexation, I think I have your culprit. In your existing sitemap http://www.scojo.com/sitemap/sitemap.xml there are 582 image urls and they seem to be all going to a 404 page.
Hope that helps!

Hi Lynn,
Thank you for the response. I personally don't think any of the pages I have blocked would really affect ranking but it was nearly immediate as soon as I uploaded the first one back in early January.
I don't believe I have ever submitted an image sitemap so I will be sure to do it.
I would really like to find a source for our ranking drop as it is driving me crazy. I fear I am missing something painfully obvious as I have looked at this site so much I may be over looking it.
-
Hi Daniel,
At first glance I'm not sure a robots.txt issue would be responsible for the rankings drop you describe. What pages are still blocked that you dont want blocked? Maybe something else is going on in regards the rankings?
For issue 2, have you submitted an image sitemap.xml? If so what is the address? I see plenty of your images in google image search, so some of them at least are being indexed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Website Redirection Issue
Hi All, Like to know is there any better way to do 301 redirection. My Client whose website name is Online Plants created with OpenCart. Over the period of time he added nearly 10,000's of products and now he is cleaning them ( by grouping similar attribute under one products) which is right way to do. For example , Product A with different size ( X,XL,XXL ) previously had 3 product entry ( A - X, A - XL, A - XXL ) , now he is moving all of them under one. So while moving he is deleting the other two entry. Now whats the best way to inform google . Putting a manual 301 redirection for each and every product is impossible as there are more products. Whats the best way to go ahead on this.

A new website issue
Hello everybody,
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | mtmaster
I have started a new website 22 days ago at the beginning of this month and i have long articles. I think this should make the site appear in search results for long tail keywords even if they are not very relevant but as you can see in the attached image from my webmaster tools the impression count has suddenly increased to 100 then significantly decreased again. Even when i cancel "filter" option. Is this normal for a 3 weeks old website? or there is something i have to check? thanks. cLMa04l.jpg0 -
SEO before Replatforming - Good Idea?
Hello, We are in the midst of a major replatforming of our current website, the process will take roughly six to nine more months to complete. We are completing revamping our site - the new site will be on the same domain, but almost everything is changing - from the category structure, hierarchy, architecture, different regions on separate URLs will not be on the same with a currency converter, URLs - you name it, we're changing it. There has been internal discussions for some time on whether we should hire an outside firm to help us with our SEO. I have a lot of experience in SEO but my role has changed recently and we have had trouble filling my previous role. We are not looking for help with the replatforming project, we have a great plan in place to preserve link equity, tags, etc. We are looking for general SEO help as if replatforming wasn't on the table. My question is, is this smart to do before replatforming? In my opinion, it's not. Our new site will have completely different URLs and will be so dramatically different. We could have someone do some keyword research, but we have already done the bulk of it. We have thought about and researched keywords for every new page we are creating. But from a technical SEO perspective, I don't see the point in getting someone. In addition, we just had a major SEO audit done last year and we completed the tasks from that audit on the current site; however, most of the changes were technical, not content based. Thoughts?

Ranking and Deindexing Issues
Hi We have a website www.advanced-tuning.co.uk which has been suffering since Penguin 2 in terms of SERPS drops and indexing of pages. There are several issues which I believe are impacting on rankings and indexing/ pages being removed from the index. 1) Unnatural links. Been through Cemper and 2% of back links are toxic , 71% suspicious. There has been some auto link building undertaken by previous SEO’ers which has resulted in a lot of very poor quality back links - .pl forum member links etc. I put together a link disavow doc and have now seen Average Link Detox Risk drop to moderate from high. There still a few dodgy links but I’m working my way through these. 2) “thin” content – the site has a lot of auto generated manufacturer / model web pages e.g. http://advanced-tuning.co.uk/model/chevrolet-captiva-2-0-d-vcdi-150/ http://advanced-tuning.co.uk/model/bmw-116i-115/ these pages are internally linked to each other In addition there's a series of geographically targeted web pages which tbh don't seem to have been hit (yet) e.g. http://advanced-tuning.co.uk/location/engine-remapping-huddersfield/ My question is should I; a) Look to remove these manufacturer / model pages completely b) Invest time in generating suitable content for the service /location pages? c) Remove both types of content and concentrate on creating suitable content and links for the top level manufacturer web pages Also If i do remove the manufacturer / model pages is it worth me 301'ing the pages that are still indexed? Thanks in advance, Ade

Temporary Redirects on Magento
I've recently taken over a client who uses the Magento platform and there was definitely a duplicate issue with his homepage. It redirected www to non www, however the canonical tag was setup wrong and pointing to the www version. When I looked at OSE for both versions the non www has only 7 linking domains and a page authority of 32. The www version has 24 linking domains and page authority of 39. As the domain is fairly new, I decided to redirect the non www to www and keep the canonical the same. (I changed the internal linking structure etc). When I run both URLs through this tool: http://www.ragepank.com/redirect-... it's returning a whole bunch of 302, rather than 301 redirects. What's the deal with that? Is that a Magento setting that I can fix or something a little harder? I'm not sure if it's proper etiquette to post the URL of a client, so if that would help and is OK, please let me know. Thanks
