How do you make short tail keyword determinations when combined with long tail when there is not enough search volume to provide info

Confusing question, allow me to elaborate
We have a few pages that target a particular doctor for example. One of those pages is about his backround.
His short tail is his name "Dr Irving Weiss" for example, low competition of course and already too low of search volume to show in Google keywords tool (which i know isn't the best tool)
so now one of his tab pages addresses info on his medical background (credentials, schools, awards, sanctions)
if you search for those single keywords alone you get something like this
hospitals 74,000
background 673,000
credentials 49,000
but that doesn't necessarily mean more people will search like
"dr irving weiss background"
than they will
"dr irving weiss credentials" just because background has more searches
"dr irving weiss background" and "dr irving weiss credentials are way too low search volume to have any data on, so how can you come to a proper keyword targeting conclusion when the data is not there?

thanks, i'm going with a combination of two.
one seems to be decent and also intuition tells me it's good, and other one has no other sites currently well optimized for it, so it actually MIGHT bring more traffic than the better one because it's an easy win with less competition.

Absolutely. It just seems that at the end of the day it's going to be a guess so the most data you can put towards it the better your chance are of choosing correctly, of course. I just hope that when you do make your decision it ends up being correct for at least the majority of the pages. Good luck - I have faith in ya!

This is so incredibly long tail - we're looking for a combination of the doctors actual name which is already long tail. Not just "Dr keyword", so it might not be that obvious.

Maybe instead of just the one word checks simply make it more broad? Like 'Dr credentials' and 'doctor background check"? Those would probably register and would be a bit more relevant to your campaign... maybe?

this is a one time change that would affect about 800,000 pages so we want to get it right the first time around and stick with that url.
my instinct would be to pick the best two and combine them in the url, then optimize for the best one out of those as primary target, and create a few instances of the secondary in the content as well in an attempt to capture both.
The question is which is the primary, do we go with search volume for that single broad keyword or use intuition which is quite often wrong hmmmmm stumped a bit

I suppose, for me, it would depend on the campaign. If it was going to be a long running client or if it was going to be my company's website I would pick one phrase and run with it for a few months and then change it up and run the other for a few months and compare the data to determine which one was the most successful.
If, however, it was a short running client like a 'one time' optimization (which I hate but they do happen) I would first rule out that I could in no way run them both together and if I couldn't and if I determined that they both carried equal relevancy to the page's subject I would take the one or two words that make the short tail phrases different (in this case 'background' and 'credentials') and I would find out which of those carried the most search volume and make an educated guess from there - I know you touched on that and I agree that it doesn't 'mean' much - but it does help with getting an idea, in my opinion.
You pose an interesting question and as I have taken your advice many times - and you certainly give excellent advice - I am quite curious as to how YOU or others here would approach this. I will be watching this thread closely.

If concepts are too similar when grouping keywords what do I do ?
I will summarise and then ty to explain : When I group keyword with the keyword explorer if concepts (grouping keywords) that I find are too similar to each other how do I go about it... Ldg me know explain. When google doesn't have enough data to rank a website with content does it only use links ? Let me give you an example. If I take "title tag" as a keyword people have a lots of questions that can be answered which will create numerous concepts. However, let's take "hiking tours Italy" for example. If I go through the keyword explorer or all the other tools existing out there people don't have questions. All I find are variations or synonyms of my keyword and I group by low lexical similarity all the words are going to be very similar. I know that each variation can be grouped and considered a different concepts but writing about various concepts that mean exactly the same thing because of lack of data not very smart and useful... So in that case what does google do, does it rank a website only based on links or schema ? see that it has no way to rank it based on good quality content because of a lack of data (questions that could be answers that would lead to concepts). What to do when on your keyword there are no questions ?
Let me give me you an example. For example for the keyword title tag (let's imagine) I would want to rank on that. I go to the keyword explorer or related searches at the bottom of google there are many questions people have.. I find expressions (with the same user intent) such as "title tag length", "title tags generator", " "why are title tag importants" (I found this one using the are questions drop down menu of the keyword explorer). With this in hand I can create a page where I answer all those questions. I would have all those expressions being an H2 and answer the questions using related phrases and context word that I will find with the keyword explorer in my paragraph below. Let now take one of my keyword "Sicily bike tours". If I type this expression int he keyword explorer...the only related phrases (with the same user intent) that I find are "Sicily bike tour", "Sicily cycling tours", "Sicily bike trips"... (first thing I noticed is that it is just variation of my main expression not really question...). If I look at questions I find "what is the highest elevation in Sicily" or "How safe is Sicily for tourists". I don't imagine on a page that sells bikes tours in Sicily having h2 tags that answers those questions... and this is not what people that rank do, they describe their tour and this is what is confusing to me. Let's now take a secondary related keyword to main keyword. Let' s take "Sicily cycling tours" (it is a secondary related keyword to "Sicily bike tours". Based on the keyword explorer, the secondary related phrases to "Sicily cycling tours" are "tour of Sicily". "trips to Sicily".... ( isn't that going to be boring and look unnatural to use all those expressions ? ). There are all synonyms of my expression but not really different which is my worry ? Or can I use an expression such as "Sicilian villages" or "Sicily maps" even though they don't have the same user intent) as my secondary related keyword "Sicily cycling tours". Thank you,

Search Causing Duplicate Content
I use Opencart and have found that a lot of my duplicate content (mainly from Products) which is caused by the Search function. Is there a simple way to tell Google to ignore the Search function pathway? Or is this particular action not recommended? Building "keyword" backlinks
Looking for some opinions here please. Been involved in seo for a couple of years mainly working on my websites and picking up the odd client here and there through word of mouth. I must admit that up until a few months back I was guilty of using some grey methods of link building - linkvana, unique article wizard and the such. While no penalties were handed out to my domains and some decent rankings gained, I got tired of always being on the lookout for what the next Google update will do to my results and which networks were being hit, and so I moved a lot more into the 'proper' way of seoing. These days my primary sources for backlinks are much more respectable... myblogguest bloggerlinkup postjoint Guest Blog Finder http://ultramarketer.com/guest-blogger-finder/ - not sure where i came across this resource but it's very handy I use these sources alongside industry only directories and general word of mouth. Ironically I have found that doing the word by hand not only leads to results I can happyily show people (content wise) but also it's much quicker and cheaper. The increased authority of the sites means far fewer links are needed. The one area I still am having a little issue with is that of building keyword based backlinks. I now find it fairly easy to get my content on a reasonable quality site - DA to 40 and above, however the vast majority of these sites will allow the backlink only as the company name or as a generic read more type thing. This is fine and it is improving my website performance and authority. The trouble I am finding is that while i am ranking for the title tag and some keywords in the page, I am struggling to get backlinks for other keywords. In an ideal world every page on the site would be optimised for a different keyword and you could then just the site name as anchor text to build the authority of that page and make it rank for it's content, but what about when you (or the client) wants to rank the home for a number of different keywords, some not featured on the page. The keywords are too similar to go to the trouble of making unique pages for, and that would also add no value to the site. My question really then, after a very long winded way of getting there, is are others finding it much more difficult to gain keyword based backlinks these days? The great thing about the grey seo tools, as mentioned above, is that it was super easy to get the backlinks with whatever anchor text you wanted - even if you needed hundreds of the thing to compensate for the low value of each!! How long for a 301 redirect to pass PR?
Hi, How long does it take for a 301 redirect to pass PR/Juice to the new domain it's redirecting to? From what I understand you tell Google in Webmaster tools this domain is now going to this domain and then setup a file on the old domains hosting to redirect to the new. And that's it! If that is correct how long does it take? 2 days, 2 weeks, months, maybe never??? Cheers

Local Searches done from outside of local area better than searches from within local area
Here's a strange one: I am working on a site for a local business and targeting local searches. The names have been changed to protect the innocent. Various keyword position tools show the site ranking very well for searches like "Anytown Widget Store". Doing the same Google search from a browser in Anytown, the site shows up much lower. So I tried changing the location in Google to other cities, using a variety of browsers and it comes up much higher out of town than in town. I have seen plenty of geographic discrepancies before, but usually they went the other way - searches from the actual local area did slightly better than the same searches done elsewhere, which would make sense. Any thoughts on why this would happen?
