Affected by the Penguin 2.0...Lost Rankings!! Which one from the following causes did that?
-
Hi Moz Community,
we lost our rankings for almost all of our keywords due to penguin 2.0
I'm trying to rectify the situation by getting our rankings back and better. Here are the potential causes for our rankings drop.
1. My Company has the exact same site (in English) on different country-specific domains. companyname.com, companyname.ch, companyname.ca, companyname.nl etc..
We are using link rel="alternate" hreflang="en" href="http://companyname.com"
**Would this solve the duplicate content issue? **
2. All the international domains have footer links in the homepages, pointing to our main .com site. Google webmaster tools shows that every page on these international domains as a backlink source.
Would that be a problem? Should I ask our web designers to remove those footer links from the international domains?
3. In the past, our company had a partnership with forum...Like the forum promotes our company's services. I don't know how did that forum promoted our site, But Google webmaster tools shows that we have some 25K backlinks from that forum!!! But when I try to visit those backlinks, none of those pages have any links to our site....Could they be hidden? Or Some thing wrong with GWT?
I'd appreciate your valuable suggestions to help us understand the situation better...
Thank you.

Hey Chris,
Even I had the same reaction when I first started with this company, Why would you need all these sites...With the exact same content. They have different plans and ideas or probably misguided by some SEO guy!
Regarding the vast number of links from the forum, None of the backlink tools like OSE, Ahrefs is showing those links apart from GWT.
I'm thinking to Disavow that forum's domain. Hopefully, that should work!!
Thank for the response.

You must understand what Penguin is AntiWebSpam filter. You must control backlink profile of your site. Your profile must looking naturally. Not only your targeted keywords as anchor texts, not only backlinks on your homepage. For understanding structure of your backlink profile you can use Majestic SEO or Ahrefs (OSE on my opinion not perfect). And often after checking backlink profile I clearly understand what is wrong.

What's the purpose of having all those duplicate sites? Why not just 301 them and eliminate that as a possible cause of the problem--especially if some of them are showing up in the results? That would take care of #2, as well. As far as #3, have you tried any other tools to see if you can look at those links--OSE, MajesticSEO, or Ahrefs? Have you communicated with the webmaster there about them, documented it, and disavowed them?

Hi Tom,
First of all, thanks lot for your reply.
Funny thing is, Despite having the rel="alternate" included in our international domains. Some of them are ranking and in fact outranking our .com domain pages for some keywords.
How is that possible?
And your suggestion about putting a nofollow for the footer links is something I'm thinking to do.

Hi Eduard
First of all, if your site was effected by the Penguin 2.0 update, then your duplicate page content wouldn't have been the trigger. That has to do with the Panda algorithm (which is now part of the main algorithm), so if the drop came during the Penguin update, you could have a whole number of different problems with your site as well.
My advice would be to run your site through the Panguin tool: http://www.barracuda-digital.co.uk/panguin-tool/
This will line up your organic traffic with announced Google updates - see if your drop matches up with the Penguin update. If it does, then you have a whole number of things to check about the inbound links to your website.
To answer the questions you posted:

That should do the trick - the only problem is that by setting a canonical version you are instructing Google not to rank or consider any of the alternate versions. A more ideal solution in my opinion would be to rewrite the content for the other sites, ensuring no chance of a duplicate content penalty and giving the other sites a chance to rank.

I've seen this be a problem with Penguin before and every time I've seen it fixed the links have either been removed or have been made nofollow. You may want to limit the amount of pages the footer links appear (just core landing pages) and also make them nofollow.
Hope this helps

I'm doing a crawl analysis for a website and finding all these duplicate URLs with "null" being added to them and have no clue what could be causing this.
Does anyone know what could be causing this? Our dev team thinks it's caused by mobile pages they created a while ago but it is adding 1000's of additional URLs to the crawl report and being indexed by Google. They don't see it as a priority but I believe these could be very harmful to our site. examples from URL string:

Website rankings drop significantly after moving to new hosting provider
My website - www.isacleanse.co.nz has dropped from being top10 rankings for all of my keywords to not even being in top 50 after just checking now. It used to be hosted on: www.1stdomains.nz

It got migrated to Sitground servers about a month ago See attached screenshot - would moving hosting provider cause such a huge drop? Or would there be anything else I should be looking at ? J2ahi0 -
Are these doorway pages or not? Concerned due to Panda 4.0
For a new site we're building, the Products team wants the header (let's call this Product-Header) to have links to every subsection of every section on every page. Since this is a bad idea, I want Product-Header to be coded in such a way that it doesn't appear in the code or the links are nofollow, noindex. I want to instead create static versions of these pages without the Product-Header. The homepage links to the static URL section pages, those main section pages link to static subsection pages, and so on. It's one nice silo. I am concerned though that Google won't like this due to these static pages are being created specifically for search engines. Users could click through to this static parallel site from the homepage, or they could use the dynamic URL site. This is similar to what etsy.com is doing where you can search Google for "mermaid bridal" and get this page https://www.etsy.com/market/mermaid_bridal but the dynamic version of the page does not show up. However you can search on etsy.com for " mermaid bridal" and get https://www.etsy.com/search?q=mermaid bridal&ship_to=US. Could these static versions that show up in search engines be seen as doorway pages? I know ebay.com got spanked for doorway pages and I don't want to do anything that would get this site penalized.

How to make sure category pages rank higher than product pages?
Hi, This question is E-Commerce related. We have product categories dividing products by color. Let's say we have the category 'blue toy cars' and a product called 'blue toy car racer', both of these could rank for the keyword 'blue toy car'. How do we make sure the category 'blue toy cars' ranks above the product 'blue toy car racer'? Or is the category page automatically ranked higher because of the higher page authority of that page? 301 redirect on Windows IIS. HELP! (Part 2)
My webmaster's trying (but struggling) to 301-redirect the non.www version of my site to the www version. He's following these instructions given to me in a response to an SEOMoz Private Question (ah, the good old days!). So far he's 301-redirected the homepage but seems stuck on how to do the entire site. Any clues on what he should be doing?

Does Google follow links inside a <noscript>tag?</noscript>
I'm looking at making an embedable calculator and asking users to embed it to their website. I had the idea of using javascript to include the calculator which would also conatain a text link back to my site in order to gain some back links. If it's possible Google won't see the link (as they may not execute the javascript), is it safe to place the link in the <noscript>tag? If so, Will it be indexed and will Page Rank be passed?</span></p> <p>Thanks in advance for your answers. </p> <p>Anthony</p> <p><span style="color: #5e5e5e;"><br /></span></p></noscript>

Changing from Squarespace to Wordpress - Will I Lose My Rankings?
I have a friend who has a squarespace site that is giving him lots of trouble. For one, even though it is supposed to redirect to GreenSpaceConstruct.com...Bing and Yahoo don't seem to recognize this domain. Instead, they show greenlightconstruct.squarespace.com in the serp's. Oddly, Google shows the site as GreenSpaceConstruct.com. The site is ranking well for some terms. I'm afraid that converting to wordpress will hurt his rankings in the short term. If bing and yahoo are crawling this squarespace domain, and he moves it...is there a way not to just completely lose the rankings? Thanks for any thoughts. Much appreciated! Josh

How long will the 301 ranking swap-over take?
Hi all, I'm about to hit the crunch button and finalise the 301 setup for our website to redirect all traffic, and our old very nice ranking, to our new website. My only question is, how long will the ranking take to move to the new site? Once the 301 is in place what happens when someone searches my keywords? Currently when you search our preferred keywords we rank 1 and 2 depending on the wording. Once I've made the 301 happen, will you see the old site in Google rankings until they re-index it or will it swap straight away to the new site with its continued high rank (from the link juice) or will I have a blackspot period where I don't rank at all? I cannot afford to have a period of time, at this time of year, that I don't rank 1 or 2 - if this is even a vague possibility I might have to consider postponing my 301 till a less important time of year. Thanks for your help, Anthony
