Setting up addon domains properly (bonus duplicate content issue inside)
-
A new client of mine is using 1and1 hosting from back in the dark ages. Turns out, her primary domain and her main website (different domain) are exactly the same. She likes to have the domains names of her books, but her intention is to have it redirect to her main site. Unfortunately, 1and1's control panel is light years behind cpanel, so when she set up her new domains it just pointed everything to the same directory.
I just want to make sure I don't make this up, so please correct me if I'm wrong about something. I'm assuming this is a major duplicate content deal, so I plan to create a new directory for each add-on domain. Since her main site is an add-on itself, I'll have to move all the files into it's new home directory. Then I'll create an htaccess file for each domain and redirect it to her main site. Right so far?
My major concern is with the duplicate content. She's had two sites being exactly the same for years. Will there be any issues leftover after I set everything up properly? Is there anything else I need to do?
Thanks for the help guys! I'm fairly new to this community and love the opportunity to learn from the best!

Thanks a lot Chris, that definitely helped. Bit of a messy situation, but I'm glad that things should go a lot better once it's all cleaned up.

Mathew,
It sounds like you're on the right path. In cases where dupe sites have existed for a long time, there may be external links pointing to both sites, so you want to survey back links. If google analytics is installed on the domain(s) to be redirected, be sure to note which pages are bringing traffic from search. Redirect pages with back links and those getting search traffic to the appropriate domain.
Depending on the circumstances, after the settling-in period, you could see an increase in rankings for the main domain. If she's a local business and has all of her local citations set up, it would be good to make sure all of them reflect the proper domain name. Also, attempt to contact sites with links pointing to her old domain to see if they'll update the links.

Tags, Categories, & Duplicate Content
Looking for some advice on a duplicate content issue that we're having that definitely isn't unique to us. See, we are allowing all our tag and category pages, as well as our blog pagination be indexed and followed, but Moz is detecting that all as duplicate content, which is obvious since it is the same content that is on our blog posts. We've decided in the past to keep these pages the way they are as it hasn't seemed to hurt us specifically and we hoped it would help our overall ranking. We haven't seen positive or negative signals either way, just the warnings from Moz. We are wondering if we should noindex these pages and if that could cause a positive change, but we're worried it might cause a big negative change as well. Have you confronted this issue? What did you decide and what were the results? Thanks in advance!

Duplicate content issues arise 6 months after creation of website?!
Hi, I've had the same website for 6 months and fixed all original on-site issues a long time ago.Now this week I wake up and found 3 new errors: 3 of my pages have missing titles issues, missing meta description issues and also the Moz crawl says they all have duplicate content issues. All my rankings went down a lot as well. This site is static, doesn't even have a blog, everything is rel canonical and non-indexed. It's 100% original content as well. So how can those issues arise 6 months later? All my titles and descriptions are there and non-duplicate, and the content is original and not duplicate as well. Is this a wordpress bug or virus? Anyone had this happen to them and how to fix it? Thanks a lot for you help! -Marc

How different does content need to be to avoid a duplicate content penalty?
I'm implementing landing pages that are optimized for specific keywords. Some of them are substantially the same as another page (perhaps 10-15 words different). Are the landing pages likely to be identified by search engines as duplicate content? How different do two pages need to be to avoid the duplicate penalty?

Duplicate Content
Hi - We are due to launch a .com version of our site, with the ability to put prices into local currency, whereas our .co.uk site will be solely £. If the content on both the .com and .co.uk sites is the same (at product level mainly), will we be penalised? What is the best way to get around this?
