Duplicate Content
-
Hi,
So I have my great content (that contains a link to our site) that I want to distribute to high quality relevant sites in my niche as part of a link building campaign. Can I distribute this to lots of sites? The reason I ask is that those sites will then have duplicate content to all the other sites I distribute the content to won;t they? I this duplication bad for them and\or us?
Thanks

Hi Studio,
Here's the thing:
Links to your site that are published on other websites can help your authority and your site's ranking potential when those links are published on sites that are themselves recognized as authorities and these days, it's fairly rare to find an authoritative site that publishes duplicated articles. This tactic was considered effective in the past, (and in some cases, may work today) but Google can now identify and eliminate this as a tool to help boost your rankings. Here's an interesting past Q&A on the topic. And here's another one. In answer to your question, yes, it's not good for you and neither is it good for them.
Moving forward, give the section on growing popularity and links on Moz's Guide to SEO a read to start giving you ideas about building your site's authority.

Hi, Studio33. Yes, promoting discussion and exchange of ideas on blogs is usually the purpose of a blog. Commenting on blogs was previously used to boost SEO, but now the value is found more in the discussion participation, reputation, and calling attention to your own work. Just like you would not boast and manipulate conversation at a party, you do not want to do so on a blog comment either. But if a comment is relevant to the post and readers are likely to have interest, it is great to share your information...and if you get some attention from it, that is a nice benefit.
Do not be afraid to market your brand. If you are marketing in a respectful way with readers' interests in mind, you will rarely go wrong.

Is "We also had to promote the content to encourage inbound links so we went to every blog and commented about the tutorial to give it visibility" ok to do still?

Hi Studio33,
I used to do the same thing about a year ago. I will tell you why my strategy.
1. Most bloggers or websites that accept content only receive original content. They do not want a duplicate.
2. Google does pick up that the content is duplicate and I cannot say for sure, but I am pretty sure that the incoming link does not have any worth. I do not know this for certain.
My link building strategy
When I bought my domain (keyword domain) it had a PR2 with lots of spammy links. I bought it 2 years ago.
1. I disavowed the spammy links
2. I did directory link building, and content link building to bring it up to a PR3. I was not showing up in SERPs because my PR was so low.
3. Now that I had a PR3, anything I wrote was showing up on the first page (SERPs)
4. Now I just write articles that attract the link I actively looked for and occasionally go out and look for links. If you write about topics which people are interested in (do your keyword research) and focus on niche issues and build great content with awesome graphics, you will attract links. If you go for big concepts, it is hard to get a link. Focus on the niche. You will rank high in SERPs.
5. I will give you a specific example. We wrote an article on SEO and Parallax Scrolling since most parallax scrolling websites do not do SEO architecture. We posted the info on our blog. Note the article focuses on a very niche concept. We also had to promote the content to encourage inbound links so we went to every blog and commented about the tutorial to give it visibility. All the comments gave us a nofollow links but it did promote the material which eventually encouraged a blogger to use it in one of his articles. http://www.posicionamientowebenbuscadores.com/blog/tutorial-seo-parallax-scrolling-espanol/ - my content

How do we avoid duplicate/thin content on +150,000 product pages?
Hey guys! We got a rather large product range (books) on our eCommerce site (+150,000 titles). We get book descriptions as meta data from our publishers, which we display on the product pages. This obviously is not unique, as many other sites display the same piece of description of the book. It is important for us to rank on those book titles, so my question to You is: How would you go about it? I mean, it seems like a rather unrealistic task to paraphrase +150,000 (and growing) book descriptions. As I see it, there are these options: 1. Don't display the descriptions on the product pages (however then those pages will get even thinner!)

2. Display the (duplicate) descriptions, but put no-index on those product pages in order not to punish the rest of the site (not really an option, though).
3. Hire student workers to produce unique product descriptions for all 150,000 products (seems like a huge and expensive task) But how would You solve such a challenge?
Thanks a lot! Cheers, Tommy.0 -
Best to Fix Duplicate Content Issues on Blog If URLs are Set to "No-Index"
Greetings Moz Community: I purchased a SEMrush subscription recently and used it to run a site audit. The audit detected 168 duplicate content issues mostly relating to blog posts tags. I suspect these issues may be due to canonical tags not being set up correctly. My developer claims that since these blog URLs are set to "no-index" these issues do not need to be corrected. My instinct would be to avoid any risk with potential duplicate content. To set up canonicalization correctly. In addition, even if these pages are set to "no-index" they are passing page rank. Further more I don't know why a reputable company like SEMrush would consider these errors if in fact they are not errors. So my question is, do we need to do anything with the error pages if they are already set to "no-index"? Incidentally the site URL is www.nyc-officespace-leader.com. I am attaching a copy of the SEMrush audit. Thanks, Alan BarjWaO SqVXYMy

Duplicate content question
Hi there, I work for a Theater news site. We have an issue where our system creates a chunk of duplicate content in Google's eyes and we're not sure how best to solve. When an editor produces a video, it simultaneously 1) creates a page with it's own static URL (e.g. http://www.theatermania.com/video/mary-louise-parker-tommy-tune-laura-osnes-and-more_668.html); and 2) displays said video on a public index page (http://www.theatermania.com/videos/). Since the content is very similar, Google sees them as duplicate. What should we do about this? We were thinking that one solution would to be dynamically canonicalize the index page to the static page whenever a new video is posted, but would Google frown on this? Alternatively, should we simply nofollow the index page? Lastly, are there any solutions we may have missed entirely?

If a website trades internationally and simply translates its online content from English to French, German, etc how can we ensure no duplicate content penalisations and still maintain SEO performance in each territory?
Most of the international sites are as below: example.com example.de example.fr But some countries are on unique domains such example123.rsa

Duplicate content reported on WMT for 301 redirected content
We had to 301 redirect a large number of URL's. Not Google WMT is telling me that we are having tons of duplicate page titles. When I looked into the specific URL's I realized that Google is listing an old URL's and the 301 redirected new URL as the source of the duplicate content. I confirmed the 301 redirect by using a server header tool to check the correct implementation of the 301 redirect from the old to the new URL. Question: Why is Google Webmaster Tool reporting duplicated content for these pages?

K3 duplicate page content and title tags
I'm running a Joomla site, have just installed k2 as our blogging platform. Our Crawl Report with SEOMOZ shows a good bit of duplicate content and duplicate title tags with our K2 blog. We've installed sh404SEF. Will I need to go into sh404SEF each time we generate a blog entry to point the titles to one URL? If there is something simpler please advise. Thank you, Don

Duplicate content throughout multiple URLs dilemma
We have a website with lots of categories and there are problems that some subcategories have identical content on them. So, is it enough to just add different text on those problematic subcategories or we need to use "canonical" tag to main category. Same dilemma is with our search system and duplicate content. For example, "/category/sports" URL would have similar to identical content with "/search/sports" and "/search/sports-fitness/" URLs. Ranking factors is important for all different categories and subcategories. Ranking factors is also important for search individual keywords. So, the question is, how to make them somehow unique/different to rank on all those pages well? Would love to hear advices how it can be solved using different methods and how it would affect our rankings. When we actually need to use "canonical" tag and when 301 redirect is better. Thanks!

Duplicate page content and Duplicate page title errors
Hi, I'm new to SeoMoz and to this forum. I've started a new campaign on my site and got back loads of error. Most of them are Duplicate page content and Duplicate page title errors. I know I have some duplicate titles but I don't have any duplicate content. I'm not a web developer and not so expert but I have the impression that the crawler is following all my internal links (Infact I have also plenty of warnings saying "Too many on-page links". Do you think this is the cause of my errors? Should I implement the nofollow on all internal links? I'm working with Joomla. Thanks a lot for your help Marco
