301 redirect + new website copy
-
Hi There,
We are currently redeveloping our website and we're rewriting and optimising our many of our service pages.
I think I may already know the answer but should we apply 301 redirects from our old services pages to the new versions? The content subject matter will be the same on the new versions, they will just be completely reworded.
I would be interested to hear your views.
Thanks,
Stu

Sorry... I just had to jump in on this since the other members of the Roberts Tribe of Moz have chimed in. I agree completely with their assessment.

Good advice from Tom (no relation).
The only thoughts I'd add are:
1. Can you keep the URLs the same and just update the new page content and avoid the re-direct completely. (Unless of course you feel that optimising your URLs would deliver more benefit than retaining all the link equity)
2. Make sure you have an up to date list of your old pages and their URLs before you deploy the new site! Use this list to test!
3. Watch out for internal links in any old content and make sure these are up to date.
4. A good opportunity to look at your 404 page and see how you can improve that to help people find what they're looking for (not just telling them that the page can't be found)

Hi Stu,
I totally agree with Tom Roberts. Something to keep in mind as well. Redirects are absolutely necessary is you have incoming links to those pages. If you have a lot of pages you can get away with only doing redirects from the URL's that have incoming links.

Hi Stu
In general, yes - I would implement a 301 redirect here.
One thing to consider which might alter this decision are the links (if any) pointing to those pages at the moment. If you see any links going to those pages that you think may be spammy or against Google quality guidelines, it would be a good idea not to implement the 301 redirect - as then those bad links will no longer point to your site.
If you ever have a decision on whether to bulk redirect a large number of 301s - here's two things to consider:
-
Do those pages have any external links pointing towards it? If they don't, you're unlikely to get sustained 404 errors, as nothing will direct Google/Bing to visit those URLs (providing your on-site links and XML sitemap are updated too).
-
Have you had many page views for those pages? Hop into Google Analytics and look at the number of page views for the last 3 months. If it's a strong number, it would indicate people visit the page frequently and may have it bookmarked - in which case you'd want to redirect. If the value is low or nil, then it may not be an issue if you don't redirect.
The reason why you may not want to redirect a big number of URLs is that every redirection you add to the .htaccess file makes the file size bigger - and the bigger it is, theoretically the slower it may be. This is only a real concern when you have thousands of redirects to consider - so the above points are applicable then.
But if it's a small number, implement the 301s, update your onpage links and XML sitemap, and everything should be great!
Hope this helps

Setting Up A Website For Redirects
I've got an old defunct domain with a lot of backlinks to individual pages. I'd like to use these backlinks for link juice by redirecting them to individual pages on the new domain (both sites belong to the same company). What is the best way to set this up? I presume I need some kind of hosting & site, even if it's just a default Wordpress install, which I can then use to set up the redirects? Would it be best done using .htaccess file for 301 redirects or some other way?

301 Redirect non existant pages
Hi I have 100's of URL's appearing in Search Console for example: ?p=1_1 These go to on to 5_200 etc.. I have tried to do htaccess and the mod rewrite is on as I can redirect directories to the root i.e RewriteRule ^web_example(.*)$ /$1 [R=301,N,L] However I have tried all kinds of variations to redirect ?p= and either it doesn't work at all or it crashes the website. Can anyone point me in the right direction to fix this.

301 Redirect
Hello Moz Community, I have a question regarding 301 redirecting a new domain that contains keywords relevant to my website. However, I do NOT want to change my current domain. My main question is, by just redirecting this new domain to my current website, will those keywords in the new domain help with ranking in anyway? Thanks in advance for any help!

Will a timed 301 redirect work for Googlebot?
Our client is changing brand names and domain names. We know we need to 301 redirect the old domain, but for marketing reasons we want people to see a short message saying that the brand has changed and that they will be redirected. Example: | | Our concern is how, or if, Googlebot will intepret the redirect. Will this accomplish our SEO objective of moving the value of the page to the new domain, or do we need to do just a plain old fashioned 301 redirect and not even let the page load? Thanks for your help.

Website Redirects
Background information: We have a website (devicelock.com) which is currently our corporate website. The company use to operate under (ntutility.com) which is now being redirected to devicelock.com via a DNS Forward - 302 Redirect. The IT admin (a founder of the company) is reluctant to change it to a 301. The current flow is ntutility.com redirects to protect-me.com then redirects again to devicelock.com. When i search up Devicelock on google, it shows up as ntutlity.com. There is no devicelock.com homepage on google search. Question: Are there any negative implications about this? Is this hurting our SEO in any way? When i do link building, will this have any negative affects? Will my links for devicelock be attributed to devicelock.com?

Is 301 redirecting all old URLS after a new site redesign to the root domain bad for SEO?
After a new site redesign ...would it hinder our rankings if we 301 redirected all old URLS that are returning 404 error codes to the root domain (home page) ? Would this be a good temporary solution until we are able to redirect the pages to the appropriate corresponding page? Thanks so much!

301 Redirecting weird URLs with % in them
I've been working on redirecting links reported as 404 in Google webmaster tools. I've stumbled upon 41 URLs that Google is reporting as 404 that include a '%' in the URL, but I don't know how to redirect. Here is an example: URL: bond_information.htm%20Surety%20Bond%20Information,%20with%20FAQ Attempted redirect: redirect 301 /bond_information.htm%20Surety%20Bond%20Information,%20with%20FAQ http://www.mysite.com/ Unfortunately, after implementing the redirect, http://www.mysite.com/bond_information.htm%20Surety%20Bond%20Information,%20with%20FAQ still resolves a 404 error. Anyone successfully fix these errors using Apache .htaccess?
