301'ing away from an exact match domain.
-
Hi Moz Community!
My website gets just over 50% of its traffic from ranking in the top 3 in over 10 countries for my exact match keyword domain. 80% + from keywords related to the exact match domain.
We are now looking at doing a to 301 re-direct to a new domain to start a fresh branding to the site to increase scope and expand. This would involve removing the keyword from the homepage and domain entirely . However. Considering all competitors ranking for our main keyword, have the keyword in their domain as either a subdomain to or in their root domain and in their homepage content, would this make ranking without the keyword in domain & content hard? I have found a very similar example that has done so, so I guess the answer to that question is no its not.
about 65-70% of our anchor text on our backlinks is for our domain keyword.
Can anyone advise how best to go about maintaining rankings after 301ing or how best to go about 301ing to make sure that we can maintain the rankings for our main keyword!
Any advise at all would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks.

Re-branding is great and 301ing from existing domain to the new one is also a good idea for this but always remember whenever you do a 301 from one domain to another domain there is always a small loss of link juice which might cause a fluctuation for few or many of your ranking position in Google.
In my opinion the idea is not bad but tries to plan a strategy that aloe you to gain some quick and high quality link in that case so that it can minimize the ranking loss due to 301redirection.
**do not go for subdomain
**As far as not using a keyword in the new domain..I would always recommend you to do some competitor analysis for this and do not remove the keyword from the domain if most of the competitors are sung it as I still have an observation that Google give less (but still a value) to domain that contain keyword in it!
Hope this helps!

I recommend to do two things. 1st follow your business objectives. If you really don't have any, then try writing it out. 2nd, and equally as important, optimize for your audience, not for Google. When I hear newbies talk about putting KWs in h1 tags and domains, they are thinking the wrong way. Don't be like me. I wasted time trying to optimize my website so much that it was over-optimized and unreadable.
I stand by my statement, KW in subdomains do not give a boost. If it did, all of us on MOZ would have done that years ago. It would have also created a lot of spam sites.
Do you have any comment on removing the keyword from the homepage content?
I don't know what your GA says. That's your call. If the keyword is not as relevant, then no. All the sites I have ever built had a home page that was about all the landing pages. Go to my site and study it (the shipping one).

Thanks for your response Francisco,
Do you have any comment on removing the keyword from the homepage content?
Also, I highly doubt that its an over 8 million exact search keyword. One or two competitors I would probably side with your argument, but everyone on the top page can't be wrong.
We would be 301'ing from domain.com to domain.com, not to a subdomain. That was just reference to the competitors on first page serps.

Sub domains do not give a ranking boost. While I was a subscriber at SEObook, Aaron Wall put it like this:
creditcards.com = boost
creditcards.example.com = crap
cardscredit.com = crap
Don't worry about KW in the domain. If you can't rank any other way than to rely on the KW being in your domain, you don't deserve to rank. If I were your competitor, then all I would need to do is get some real FB URL Likes and a couple okay external links.
If you are going to 301, make sure you have your .htaccess ready to go ahead of time. Also re-submit your old sitemap in GWT 1st so it crawls your site and notices the 301s. Then submit your new sitemap.

Multiple links from same domain (different pages) considered in credibility of backlinks?
Hi, Let's say there are multiple backlinks from different pages of same domain to different pages of other domain like below: Website A: Page 1 -----------> Website B: Page 1 Website A: Page 2 -----------> Website B: Page 2 Do the pages of Website B pages will get backlinks authority equally or they don't get much backlinks impact as they have multiple backlinks from same domain? There were old school stories that Google ignores second link from same domain.....etc... So, please suggest on this. Thank you. Note: The question is NOT about content relevancy or domain authority score of the backlinks.

EMD and dot CO domains
This may be a basic question for some. I would like to get opinion of SEO experts on EMD and .co domains. I understand from what I have read that exact match domains have less value nowadays but they still have some value, that's what I seem to be sensing from experts. So I wanted to know how .co domains are viewed in term of SEO. And can an exact match .co domain have a better opportunity against another domain which is not an EMD if all other things are equal?

What do you think of SearchMetrics' claim that there are no longer universal ranking factors?
I agree that Google's machine learning/AI means that Google is using a more dynamic set of factors to match searcher intent to content, but this claim feels like an overstatement: Let’s be quite clear: Except for important technical standards, there are no longer any specifc factors

or benchmark values that are universally valid for all online marketers and SEOs. Instead, there
are different ranking factors for every single industry, or even every single search query. And these
now change continuously. Keyword-relevant content, backlinks, etc. still seem to be ranking factors across pretty much all queries/industries. For example, I can't think of a single industry where it would be a good idea to try to rank for [keyword] without including [keyword] in the visible text of the page. Also, websites that rank without any backlinks are incredibly rare (unheard of for competitive terms). Doubtless some factors change (eg Google may favor webpages with images for a query like "best hairstyle for men" but not for another query), but other factors still seem to apply to all queries (or at least 95%+). Question: About Google's personalization of search results and its impact on monitoring ranking results
Given Google's personalization of search results for anyone who's logged into a Google property, how realistic and how actually meaningful/worthwhile is it to monitor one's ranking results for any keyword term these days?

Links from high Domain authority sites
I have a relatively uncompetitive niche ranking around number 6 for my keywords. Would getting a few links from some Moz DA 80-90 and DA 90-100 sites help my rankings a lot? Some of the pages linking to me from these sites might be deep in the site pretty far away from the home page with pagerank of "unranked" or a grayed out bar and these pages linking to me might not have many links at all other than from the internal links of the site itself and would have a Moz PA of 10 or 20. Would these pass much pagerank or authority to my site or would they not be worth going after? These links to my site would be in context on a blog. Thanks mozzers!

EMD and partial match
Hi guys, let's say we are looking to become the number one authority in widgets. We therefore want to acquire the domain widgets.com for rebranding and SEO purposes. I know the upside of this in terms of SEO is getting smaller, but it's still there. So we get a small boost when people search for "widgets", but would a domain like this also contribute to ranking for terms like "blue widgets" and "brandname widgets"? If so, would somethings like widgets.com/blue-widget.html be optimal? Thanks! 🙂

Changing in website design reduce traffic? I don't think so.
HI, Around the month of Nov I was working on the website. Due to some reasons I have to change the design of website. We are working on SEO area enough and try to recover from it. Your suggestion may be helpful for us.So I am looking forward for your answers. how i can over come with it. Thanks Regards

Google SERPS problem - "block all results from this domain - click here".
Anyone know what can be done about this when it happens to one of your own domains? On the Google SERPS page, underneath the Title, next to the Description, Google has added "Block all results from this domain?". I understand that this is a new "feature", aimed at allowing users to filter out results from low quality, pornograhphic or offensive sites. But the site in question is none of the above - any ideas how to tackle? Couldn't find anything yet by searching.
