Best Way to Break Down Paginated Content?
-
(Sorry for my english)
I have lots of user reviews on my website and in some cases, there are more than a thousand reviews for a single product/service. I am looking for the best way to break down these reviews in several sub-pages.
Here are the options I thought of:
1. Break down reviews into multiple pages / URL
http://www.mysite.com/blue-widget-review-page1
http://www.mysite.com/blue-widget-review-page2
etc...In this case, each page would be indexed by search engines.
- Pros: all the reviews are getting indexed
- Cons: It will be harder to rank for "blue widget review" as their will be many similar pages
2. Break down reviews into multiple pages / URL with noindex + canonical tag
http://www.mysite.com/blue-widget-review-page1
http://www.mysite.com/blue-widget-review-page2
etc...In this case, each page would be set to noindex and the canonical tag would point to the first review page.
- Pros: only one URL can potentially rank for "blue widget review"
- Cons: Subpages are not indexed
3. Load all the reviews into one page and handle pagination using Javascript
reviews, reviews, reviews
more reviews, more reviews, more reviews
etc...Each page would be loaded in a different
which would be shown or hidden using Javascript when browsing through the pages. Could that be considered as cloaking?!?
- Pros: all the reviews are getting indexed
- Cons: large page size (kb) - maybe too large for search engines?
4. Load only the first page and load sub-pages dynamically using AJAX
Display only the first review page on initial load. I would use AJAX to load additional reviews into the
. It would be similar to some blog commenting systems where you have to click on "Load more comments" to see all the comments.
- Pros: Fast initial loading time + faster loading time for subpages = better user experience
- Cons: Only the first review page is indexed by search engines

My main competitor who's achieving great rankings (no black hat of course) is using technique #3.
What's your opinion?

I think you are forgetting that engines are capable of running Javascript just fine, and all the content that is brought via AJAX to be viewable to the user will also be indexed by search engines.
I would certainly go with option 4, it's a standard Today, but have a look at the "pushState", that and address manipulation, that way, your users will be able to access an exact review (say in page 3) by just typing the address: http://www.mysite.com/blue-widget-review-page3 and have by default the page 3 loaded.
If you go this route, you can also put a hidden (css'ed) NEXT PAGE button at the end to link to the next page.Hope that helps!

Check out these pages by Google that talk about Pagination: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/1663744?hl=en and http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2012/03/video-about-pagination-with-relnext-and.html
In your case, the best way would be to use rel="next" and rel="prev" tags.
Are you using wordpress? If so, the Yoast plugin will take care of this for you.

Is this duplicate content that I should be worried about?
Our product descriptions appear in two places and on one page they appear twice. The best way to illustrate that would be to link you to a search results page that features one product. My duplicate content concern refers to the following, When the customer clicks the product a pop-up is displayed that features the product description (first showing of content) When the customer clicks the 'VIEW PRODUCT' button the product description is shown below the buy buytton (second showing of content), this is to do with the template of the page and is why it is also shown in the pop-up. This product description is then also repeated further down in the tabs (third showing of content). My thoughts are that point 1 doesn't matter as the content isn't being shown from a dedicated URL and it relies on javascript. With regards to point 2, is the fact the same paragraph appears on the page twice a massive issue and a duplicate content problem? Thanks

Techniques for diagnosing duplicate content
Buonjourno from Wetherby UK 🙂 Diagnosing duplicate content is a classic SEO skill but I'm curious to know what techniques other people use. Personally i use webmaster tools as illustrated here: http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc53/zymurgy_bucket/webmaster-tools-duplicate.jpg but what other techniques are effective? Thanks,

Best way to handle indexed pages you don't want indexed
We've had a lot of pages indexed by google which we didn't want indexed. They relate to a ajax category filter module that works ok for front end customers but under the bonnet google has been following all of the links. I've put a rule in the robots.txt file to stop google from following any dynamic pages (with a ?) and also any ajax pages but the pages are still indexed on google. At the moment there is over 5000 pages which have been indexed which I don't want on there and I'm worried is causing issues with my rankings. Would a redirect rule work or could someone offer any advice? https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=site:outdoormegastore.co.uk+inurl:default&num=100&hl=en&safe=off&prmd=imvnsl&filter=0&biw=1600&bih=809#hl=en&safe=off&sclient=psy-ab&q=site:outdoormegastore.co.uk+inurl%3Aajax&oq=site:outdoormegastore.co.uk+inurl%3Aajax&gs_l=serp.3...194108.194626.0.194891.4.4.0.0.0.0.100.305.3j1.4.0.les%3B..0.0...1c.1.SDhuslImrLY&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&fp=ff301ef4d48490c5&biw=1920&bih=860

Client has 3 websites, for various locations & duplicate content is a big issue...Is my solution the best?
Hi guys, I have a client who has 3 websites all for different locations in the same state in Australia. Obviously this is not the best practice but in the meeting he said that each area is quite particular about where they do business. What he means is that people from one area want to do business with a website from that particular area. He has 3 domains and we have duplicate content issues. We are solving these at the moment with the canonical tag however they are redesigning the site soon. My suggestion is that we have 1 domain and sub domains for the other 2 areas. This way the people from that area will see the company is from their area. Also this way we have 1 domain to optimise and build domain authority for. Has anyone else come across this and is my solution the best for this? Thanks! Jon

Linking to unrelated content
Hi, Just wanted to know, linking to unrelated content will harm the site? I know linking to unrelated content is not good. But wanted to know weather any chances are there or not. I have a site related to health and the other one related to technology. The technology site is too good having PR 6 and very good strong backlinks. And the health related site has very much tough competition, So i wanted to know may be i could link this health site to technology site to get good link from it. Can you suggest me about it. waiting for your replies...

Company Name, My Name, A ficticious name that works for the company, or some other? Any Mozzers want to share thoughts or past strategies that have been successful?

Internal vs external blog and best way to set up
I have a client that has two domians registered - one uses www.keywordaustralia.com the other uses www.keywordaelaide.com He had already bought and used the first domain when he came to me I suggested the second as being worth buying as going for a more local keyword would be more appropriate. Now I have suggested to him that a blog would be a worthy use of the second domain and a way to build links to his site - however I am reading that as all links will be from the same site it wont be worth much in the long run and an internal blog is better as it means updated content on his site. should i use the second domain for blog, or just 301 the second domain to his first domain. Or is it viable to use the second domain as the blog and just set up an rss feed on his page ? Is there a way to have the second domain somehow 'linked' to his first domain with the blog so that google sees them as connected ? NOOBIE o_0

Forget Duplicate Content, What to do With Very Similar Content?
All, I operate a Wordpress blog site that focuses on one specific area of the law. Our contributors are attorneys from across the country who write about our niche topic. I've done away with syndicated posts, but we still have numerous articles addressing many of the same issues/topics. In some cases 15 posts might address the same issue. The content isn't duplicate but it is very similar, outlining the same rules of law etc. I've had an SEO I trust tell me I should 301 some of the similar posts to one authoritative post on the subject. Is this a good idea? Would I be better served implementing canonical tags pointing to the "best of breed" on each subject? Or would I be better off being grateful that I receive original content on my niche topic and not doing anything? Would really appreciate some feedback. John
