What is the best approach to handling 404 errors?
-
Hello All - I'm a new here and working on the SEO on my site www.shoottokyo.com. When I am finding 4xx (Client Errors) what is the best way to deal with them? I am finding an error like this for example: http://shoottokyo.com/2010/11/28/technology-and-karma/ This may have been caused when I updated my permalinks from shoottokyo.com/2011/09/postname to shoottokyo.com/postname. I was using the plug in Permalinks moved permanently to fix them.
Sometimes I am able to find http://shoottokyo.com/a-very-long-week/www.newscafe.jp and I can tell that I simply have a bad link to News Cafe and I can go to the post and correct it but in the case of the first one I can't find out where the crawler even found the problem. I'm using Wordpress. Is it best to just use a plugin like 'Redirection' to move the rest that have errors where I cannot find the source of the issue?
Thanks
Dave

Hi Dave
404 errors will happen on website and you dont have to usually worry about them ( unless they are in alarmingly high numbers ) . You only want to worry about 301ing 404 pages when you are losing link juice with those.
I would use these 3 methods to find 404s on the site
-
Like Chris mentioned using Screaming Frog
-
Use your Analytics Package and search for traffic landing on the 404 page
-
Use Google Bing Webmaster Tools and see the 404 message warning ( in Crawl Stats area )
Form here you would want to 301 all valid 404 error pages to the close resembling pages ( that visitors will find useful ).

I haven't used that one but I just read up on it. It looks good.

Thanks for the fast response Chris. Is the best approach to 301 them using a PlugIn like Redirection? Is there a better approach or is there downsides to using a plug in to handle this?
-
Dave, you can use a tool like ScreamingFrog or Xenu's Lunk Sleuth to find links pointing to the 404 pages. You can leave the pages to 404 unless you can see in your stats that search was sending you traffic to those pages or you have external links going to them--in that case you'll want to 301 them.

Best method for tracking true keyword ranking overtime?
It seems as though week to week ranking monitoring can be very volatile, and comparing over the course of a month only takes into account the absolute change and not whether the rank has been jumping up and down in the 3 weeks between. What is a good method (Moz tool or not) for tracking a true change in average rank?

Multiple Countries, Same Language: Receiving Duplicate Page & Content Errors
Hello! I have a site that serves three English-speaking countries, and is using subfolders for each country version: United Kingdom: https://site.com/uk/ Canada: https://site.com/ca/ United States & other English-speaking countries: https://site.com/en/ The site displayed is dependent on where the user is located, and users can also change the country version by using a drop-down flag navigation element in the navigation bar. If a user switches versions using the flag, the first URL of the new language version includes a language parameter in the URL, like: https://site.com/uk/blog?language=en-gb In the Moz crawl diagnostics report, this site is getting dinged for lots of duplicate content because the crawler is finding both versions of each country's site, with and without the language parameter. However, the site has rel="canonical" tags set up on both URL versions and none of the URLs containing the "?language=" parameter are getting indexed. So...my questions: 1. Are the Duplicate Title and Content errors found by the Moz crawl diagnostic really an issue? 2. If they are, how can I best clean this up? Additional notes: the site currently has no sitemaps (XML or HTML), and is not yet using the hreflang tag. I intend to create sitemaps for each country version, like: .com/en/sitemap.xml .com/ca/sitemap.xml .com/uk/sitemap.xml I thought about putting a 'nofollow' tag on the flag navigation element, but since no sitemaps are in place I didn't want to accidentally cut off crawler access to alternate versions. Thanks for your help!

What's the best way to eliminate "429 : Received HTTP status 429" errors?
My company website is built on WordPress. It receives very few crawl errors, but it do regularly receive a few (typically 1-2 per crawl) "429 : Received HTTP status 429" errors through Moz. Based on my research, my understand is that my server is essentially telling Moz to cool it with the requests. That means it could be doing the same for search engines' bots and even visitors, right? This creates two questions for me, which I would greatly appreciate your help with: Are "429 : Received HTTP status 429" errors harmful for my SEO? I imagine the answer is "yes" because Moz flags them as high priority issues in my crawl report. What can I do to eliminate "429 : Received HTTP status 429" errors? Any insight you can offer is greatly appreciated! Thanks,

Duplicate Errors found in my search
I have run my 1st site check with SEOMOZ and have 4000+ errors. The "duplicate Page Content" culprit appears to be a extended url that keeps showing as duplicating. This is only a customer log-in and can be redirected back to the main cust log in page, but is there a short way of doing it (rather than 4000x 301's)? The format of the url is: http://www.????.com.au/default/customer/account/login/referer/aSR0cDovL3d3dy1234YWNiYW Thanks

Best Keyword Difficulty Tool?
Hi All, I'm a bit frustrated with the fact that I can only enter 5 words at a time into SEOmoz's keyword difficulty tool. Does anyone know of a better way (or tool) to analyze keyword difficulty for hundreds of keywords?

What is the best link building management tool ?
What is the best link building management tool that can automatically fill in content for submission for me, check whether my sites are submitted on other sites, propose new lists of submission sites, organize my link building (by date, anchor text, url, page rank, both back links, reciprocal, paid, etc), organize my social media profiles and connect them to each other ?

Are there errors in your PRO reports lately?
Working with a new client with large websites. On the competitive domain analysis the numbers for my client and 3 competitors was 48 | 52, 51, 55 For 2 whole weeks it jumped to 68 | 48, 43, 51 and there were some really odd supporting numbers such as total links moving from 107K originally to 806K. Just today, the numbers have reverted to the previous numbers. I am relatively new to moz and like the reports, but this is very unnerving. Is there an explanation? Anyone else seeing this? Added: Aargh. The numbers just jumped back to the previous high numbers. Help.
