Am I doing SEO test properly?
-
Hello,
I just created a page for researching the impact of social signals on Google ranking (in Italy). Page was not optimized (one internal backlink, no other external/internal links, keyword repeated 4 or 5 + h1 h2, no alt tags), and only social signals are being stimulated (through votes).
The domain is 2 months old and is already positioned for few relevant keywords, but from 2 page down.
My question is: am I doing right? Is this a good way to proceed? And if not, what I should do instead?
Thank you for an advice.
Eugenio

thanks jesse,
You now got me right Sorry if I was unclear.. yes, i will try monitoring all changes.. nothing happened by now only with keywords, so Im trying to slowly implement more optimization (starting from internal links and external forward links). I hope I will get somewhere with results, and I ll be more than happy to share with all you mozzers
Thanks again.

OOOOH I get it this is an experiment. Well in that case how can we tell you if you are doing it right? Seeing as how it's an experiment, you are essentially responsible for setting the parameters of said experiment. So if this means that you are going to do on-site optimization as best you can and then nothing but social shares.. so be it. But it's up to you if you're doing it right or not.. ?
Am I understanding now? If so I think this is really cool and I'd love to hear the results of what you end up with.
Be sure to track the keywords you're targeting and how competitive they are from global/local monthly search totals to competitor profiles... That will be very important in this study.
Good luck!

Hello Jesse,
Thanks for your reply. Sorry if I was not clear. What I meant is that I am trying to do a test: on a not very optimized new url, where there s only explanation of the test, i would like to see if its possible to rank only (or almost only) with social signals (+1s likes tweets).
I asked if I am doing right or if the type of test I am trying to do is not done with the correct approach.
PS sorry I didnt mention before, url is http://socialengagement.it/seo-italia-test (sorry is in Italian, but with google translation its easy to understand the points)

I'm not sure I understand the question. Are you asking if your on-site optimization is okay? If so.. then yes, from what you've said it sounds decent enough. Hopefully it doesn't look or read too spammy as I'm afraid it might if this has been your focus.
Why aren't there any links pointing in? That's what you need.. Sorta. What you really need is awesome original content.
What you are describing is just a small little piece of the SEO/SEM pie. You need a marketing campaign: brand development, content generation, social presence, etc. Do some more research on what it means to be an SEO in today's markets. You can find a TON of information on this site. Read some blogs, search through the Q&A forums for topics that strike your fancy, read read read!

Site Category structure detrimental to SEO?
Hi Guys, I am hoping that you may be able to help with an internal debate on whether our currently category structuring could be damaging from an SEO point of view. Our site sells t shirts primarily and as such we have a large product base of around 7000+ products. Our category structure currently works like so: Mens/T-Shirts/Movie&TV/TV/ Which I think is fairly typical, though this where it gets interesting, within this end category of "/TV/" there are around 120 categories that are used from a filtration point of view to contain items for each specific show etc, IE Mens/T-Shirts/Movie&TV/TV/Breaking_Bad, Mens/T-Shirts/Movie&TV/TV/Game_of_Thrones. The vast majority of these categories have between 1 and 3 products within them and the rest higher. Multiply this by the large amount of categories that we have on site and these end level "Band Title" categories amount to around 13,000+ categories in the directory. If at this point we put the filtration element aside, what is the communities opinion of the benefits or drawbacks of having the category structure like this? Thanks in advance for any feedback.

One-Pager and SEO
We're building a page that is going to feature over 31 people as difference makers in their field. We're unveiling one a day for an entire month. The very early mockup of the page has name, pic, some bio info, and a link to open up a new window with the full bio. I would love to have all of the bio content for all of the people on the page (and indexable), but I'm not sure how to do that while still being able to hide the full bios until they are expanded. Anybody have any tips that are SEO-friendly and/or examples of a page that is built like this and ranks well. Thanks!

Is Disqus SEO friendly?
I like the look of Disqus for handling comments but I'm not sure if it is really SEO friendly. Any other more SEO friendly alternatives out there (other than blogging software)?

How to properly abandon mod rewrite?
Hi, We've done mod-rewrite to our .php files to show .htm files several years ago for SEO purposes. My question is, doing this has become a hassle for adding new pages, etc. and I'd like to make a clean break with the .htm and move to their real file names and or directories (e.g. company.htm --> /company/ ). What kind of ranking penalty am I looking at if we switch? We're a small company with billion dollar competitors so a rank loss would be fairly devastating. I assume I'd need to do 301 redirects for all of the old file names (obviously yes for the change from page to directories) but for each individual page? Thanks, Matt

SEO Tomfoolery
Oh Hai, I recently changed the permalink structure on my Wordpress based site, southwestbreaks.co.uk from the standard ?p=123 to a more SEO chummy /%postname%/. As a result, my site has completely dropped off the board for all my previously well ranked search phrases. Having since gotten into SEOmoz a bit more, I can see there are WP plugins available that apparently would've done this a lot more smoothly. I'd be most grateful if someone could explain if this drop off is just temporary, or have I somehow entered Google's shun book? The site has been like this for about 48 hours. Thanks, Tim

Ecommerce SEO with 130 keywords
Hello everyone, My name is Davys and I'm what you call a newbie...so the question may sound stupid....But where we go. In this campaign I will be targeting around 130 to 150 keywords to my store. So here is the technical question. What is the right way of indexing 150 keywords? Should I attempt to have all 150 going to www.mysite.com or should I break it down into smaller pages if I can put it that way. Like www.mysite.com/pages/bikiniwax for example. Even if I break it down, what is the right amount of keywords that I should SEO per page? Or do 150 pages? Please helppppppppppppppppppppp.... 🙂 Thanks a lot for your help.
