Slug redirect
-
Hi All,
I'm facing a small yet big problem on one of my sites that I'll try to explain:
I have a site with thousands of URL's, all with an odd link structure, like index.php/modules?=name=Video , etc I want to build a proper link structure and for that I'll have to replace that links. My question is:
1. Will I have any relevant SEO problem to do 301 redirects from the old links to the new?
2. Should I do it all at the same time or do it by parts?
3. What options do I have to avoid give not found errors / redirects for the old links? Thanks for the help.

Hi Antoine,
Since this is a really big project, you may want to consider outsourcing it. The biggest part of the project is creating a database (or spreadsheet) of all the old page URLs and their new corresponding page URLs. That work doesn't require much skill. So, you may be able to save tons of time hiring a contractor through odesk (or some other site) and it wouldn't have to cost a lot.

Hi,
Thanks for your feedback.
It's going to be a little hard to redirect all at the same time because the structure is really, really big, however we will proceed accordingly.Cheers!

Ditto on those points.

I agree with Lesley for all three.

Hi answers to questions below:
1. Will I have any relevant SEO problem to do 301 redirects from the old links to the new?
- If you using 301 redirects to new URLs you should not have any issues, its time consuming and no easy work around since you need to point old urls to new ones but definitely wont loose any rankings.
2. Should I do it all at the same time or do it by parts?
- If you are changing all the urls then do it at once.
3. What options do I have to avoid give not found errors / redirects for the old links?
- Use webmaster tools to assist you with not found errors. I have switched from a static html php site to Wordpress about 2 years ago with approx 2000 pages indexed. Im still receiving not found errors therefore its a good idea to monitor this daily and fix asap.

Redirect and ranking issue
Hi there - was wondering whether someone might be able to help. For a period of a day and a half, all the traffic to our website's blog articles were mistakenly being redirected to our homepage. A number of these articles ranked in the top 5 in Google worldwide for their targeted keywords, so this was a considerable amount of organic traffic that was instantly being redirected. It was a strange site glitch and our web team rectified the error, but now all these articles have disappeared from Google rankings (not visible anywhere in the first five pages). I'm presuming this must be linked to this redirect issue - we've been advised to wait and see whether Google restores these rankings, but I'm still concerned as to whether this represents a more serious problem? We have re-indexed the pages we are most concerned about, but am not sure whether there is anything else obvious we should think to do. If anyone has any thoughts, I'd be happy to hear them!

.htaccess redirects
I've done some research but can't find a good answer to this question. Here's my situation: Site redirects from example.com to www.example.com just fine. However, it doesn't work so well for internal pages. My site incorrectly redirects (non-www) example.com/page2 to www.example.com when it should instead go to www.example.com/page2 So I need a method to redirect non-www internal pages to www versions. Currently I have this in my .htaccess - do I need to modify the rules? RewriteEngine on

301 redirect from Blogger
Hello, I have a client with a Wordpress network of blogs, each blog is owned by a different blogger. Many of them were migrated time ago from Blogger. I have seen that the way used to redirect them is a meta refresh, so no authority is being passed. I cannot find any reliable way of making a 301 from Blogger, There are some plugins, but I'm afraid of using them. Any of you have experience with this situation please? I have even thought about placing a global rel canonical before the meta refresh, but I think that here the problem is the meta refresh itself.... Thank you in advance

What do I need to do to fix this?

301 redirect issues
Hi all, I'm hoping someone will be able to help me with an extermley frustrating problem with 301 redirects in .htaccess. Basically I'm trying to redirect some old pages (from our old website) that stil rank to the new equivilent. For example - old url = www.domain.com/frames/news/company-news/news-reader.php?newsStoryID=395 New www.domain.com/news/article-title I've tried the simple redirect 301 /frames/news/company-news/news-reader.php?newsStoryID=395 http://www.domain.com/news/article-title But this doesnt work. I've also tried - RewriteEngine on
Technical SEO | | EclipseLegal
RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} ^newsStoryID=395$
RewriteRule ^/news-reader.php$ http://www.domain.com/news/article-title/? [L,R=301] Could anyone help? I've followed lots of tutorials that all match the above but it just doesn't work! The only other thing within the htaccess file is from wordpress for pretty permalinks - BEGIN WordPress <ifmodule mod_rewrite.c="">RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^index.php$ - [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /index.php [L]</ifmodule> END WordPress Many thanks in advance!0 -

Redirecting /default to domain ??
Google analytics shows me that this: http://www.quicklearn.com/default.aspx is my "top content page" This page doesn't redirect to my root domain: http://www.quicklearn.com IT tells me that "/default.aspx" can not redirect to my domain. I am told: "You can only redirect deeper into the site." We have had an ongoing issue with duplicate content (that we are in the process of correcting). Anyone with experience in redirecting that can help? Any advice welcome
