"Agents" Thanks very much for the answer and appreciate the help...
I think in the case of this site, since it is a very simple blog, swapping the tags and categories won't completely break the site or the SEO.
But for the sake of preventing any misunderstanding in general, categories and tags are fundamentally quite different. Many people do swap their use, and get away with doing so because the sites are simple.
First, refer to the "Categories vs. Tags" section in my post on the Moz blog
To reiterate the basic differences here:
Categories
- Can have a hierarchy (be nested as parents and children)
- Are used best as a "menu" - like if the entire website is a blog, the categories are designed to fit into your main menus - this is built right into the wordpress functionality. This menu can be the main menu at the top, or in the sidebar
- A category archive can be the homepage
- 5-8 categories (the main buckets of topics on your blog) is best. If you want more, you can nest them
- Categories always existed, from the beginning of wordpress
- When used in this proper fashion, the category archives should be indexed by engines.
Tags
- Tags have NO hierarchy (they can't be nested)
- They are not to be used in the menu of a site - the main menu or sidebar menu. You see them a lot as a "tag cloud" in the sidebar or at the bottom of posts. They work better as this type of navigation, if users want to find articles similar in a much more specific way.
- A tag archive can NOT be the homepage
- You can use as many tags as you want, but they should not be the same as categories. They should be more detailed than categories.
- Tags didn't always exist from the beginning of wordpress, they were added after.
- When used in this best practice way, I always advice to NOT index tags (at least at first). Tag pages will be thin, almost duplicate and of little use to the searcher. MUCH better landing on a category archive or better yet a post its self.

In my mind, categories and tags are kind of the same thing. Some people like to use categories for major groups, and tags for more fine tuned grouping within a larger category.
The main benefit of categories and tags are that they provide easier navigation to your older entries. If you don't have those, then the old posts can end up buried, 7 or 8 hops from the homepage, and they start to lose their ranking power.
If you go overboard and add lots of categories and tags, you end up creating excess pages on your site, which have very similar content, which tends to water down your ranking power.
I would recommend just sticking with tags, since it seems you're already setup with that. They work fine as 'categories'.
Also, one 'pro tip', would be to try to look for ways to link your new posts to your old posts. Like here, you have a post on dota maps - http://www.dota2club.com/dota-6-74c-ai-v2-7-fun-map-download/ - maybe you have older posts on a similar topic? Adding relevant internal links would definitely give your older posts a boost.

Use of "/" and using fractions in titles
We are a company that sells pipe and fittings. An example of a part that someone will search for is : 3/4" PVC Socket I am not sure how best to represent the fraction in the title of the page that has such a product. I am concerned that if I use the forward slash it will be misinterpreted by search engines (although it will be interpreted properly by users). A lot of folk search for the product by the fraction size and so it would be good to be able to represent it in the title, but I don't want to get "punished" by confusing search engines. I could replace the forward slash with a hyphen or pipe symbol, but then may look a bit weird to our users... Any recommendations? Bob

Using a Sub Domain as a Main Domain?
Hi, I'm working on a site at the moment and the sub domain is acting as the main domain. This occurred when the site was redesigned and built on a sub domain for testing but it was never moved to the main domain when it went live (a couple of years ago). So little or no pages are live on domain.com but all on sub.domain.com. It's a large company but they have very poor rankings. Would you recommend that they move the sub domain back into the root folder? Does this involve renaming/re-pointing URLs? Thanks Louise

Should I use **tags or h1/h2 tags for article titles on my homepage**
I recently had an seo consultant recommend using tags instead of h1/h2 tags for article titles on the homepage of my news website and category landing pages. I've only seen this done a handful of times on news/editorial websites. For example: http://www.muscleandfitness.com/ Can anyone weigh in on this?

Are pages with a canonical tag indexed?
Hello here, here are my questions for you related to the canonical tag: 1. If I put online a new webpage with a canonical tag pointing to a different page, will this new page be indexed by Google and will I be able to find it in the index? 2. If instead I apply the canonical tag to a page already in the index, will this page be removed from the index? Thank you in advance for any insights! Fabrizio

Easy way to change wordpress category titles. Currently categories are appearing with the same title?!
I'm working on a wordpress adult dating review site and have started to set up categories for each of my main keywords. I have also started to add sub categories by county and town and so far have done so for the counties of 'Lincolnshire' and 'Derbyshire'. The problem is though that for each of my subcategories the page titles are appearing the same. For example: www.mysite.com/category/online-dating/lincolnshire/spalding (root category online dating) shows the title as 'Spalding'. www.mysite.com/category/adult-dating/lincolnshire/spalding also has the title 'Spalding' even though it's root category is different (adult dating). It's probably easier to go to http://www.top-10-dating-reviews.com to see how it's set up. If you click in the category text in the top menu and navigate to dating/derbyshire/alfreton for example and then adult dating/derbyshire/alfreton you'll notice the page titles are the same. I use all in one SEO pack and have rewrite titles checked with category titles set to %category_title% | %blog_title%. I also use category SEO updater. In order to prevent duplicate content issues how can I simply make the title of each category category root title/category subtitle(county)/category subtitle 2(town). The title of each category page would then read for example Online Dating Lincolnshire Spalding.

Rel=canonical tag on original page?
Afternoon All,
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | Jellyfish-Agency
We are using Concrete5 as our CMS system, we are due to change but for the moment we have to play with what we have got. Part of the C5 system allows us to attribute our main page into other categories, via a page alaiser add-on. But what it also does is create several url paths and duplicate pages depending on how many times we take the original page and reference it in other categories. We have tried C5 canonical/SEO add-on's but they all seem to fall short. We have tried to address this issue in the most efficient way possible by using the rel=canonical tag. The only issue is the limitations of our cms system. We add the canonical tag to the original page header and this will automatically place this tag on all the duplicate pages and in turn fix the problem of duplicate content. The only problem is the canonical tag is on the original page as well, but it is referencing itself, effectively creating a tagging circle. Does anyone foresee a problem with the canonical tag being on the original page but in turn referencing itself? What we have done is try to simplify our duplicate content issues. We have over 2500 duplicate page issues because of this aliasing add-on and want to automate the canonical tag addition, rather than go to each individual page and manually add this tag, so the original reference page can remain the original. We have implemented this tag on one page at the moment with 9 duplicate pages/url's and are monitoring, but was curious if people had experienced this before or had any thoughts?0 -
Title tag showing in Google that we are not setting
Hello, We've noticed that when we do a specific search (print screen attached), that the business name and/or a completely different title is getting indexed into the search engine that we are not setting. Below is an example from the source code of how we're setting the title, this matches the 2nd listing circled in the attached image. The indexed title tag reflects "Animal Business Card Holders - Kyle Design" Any ideas or feedback on how this is happening? <title>Animal Business Card Cases in Pet, Insect and Wildlife Designstitle> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" /> <meta name="description" content="Eye-catching business card holder cases personalized with custom animal designs for humane professionals and pet owners.
