Best practice for Portfolio Links

I have a client with a really large project portfolio (over 500 project images), which causes their portfolio page to have well over the 100 links that are recommended. How can I reduce this without reducing the number of photos they can upload?

On top of creating a content page and organising the projects into various categories, you may want to consider featuring the best few projects in the main page. You would want to impress visitors the first thing upon arriving at the portfolio, and having over 100 project links of various types won't be a good idea.
Not to forget, don't overcram the main page with project images. As the saying goes, "less is more". A select few projects images will be enough to attract interested visitors and they would naturally delve deeper into the portfolio through the links and categories.

Yes, probably a good idea to use specific portfolio tags (like "portfolio cats", "portfolio dogs", etc.). That way it doesn't get mixed up with other content (unless you want it to, of course).
Then you could create a portfolio overview page where you link to your sub-topics.

That's a good idea, thank you for responding! I am already using tags for different topics but it's not affecting the link structure.. would I need to have separate portfolio pages? I am using a WP theme (canvas).

Split the portfolio up into various topics? This seems better for usability as well. Tag the various portfolios by category and make it nice and browseable. Does that make sense?

City and state link stuffing in footer
A competitor has links to every state in the U.S., every county in our state and nearby states, and every city in those nearby states. All with corresponding link text and titles that lead to pages with thin, duplicate content. They consistently rank high in the SERPS and have for years. What gives--I mean, isn't this something that should get you penalized?

How do I fix my portfolio causing duplicate content issues?
Hi, Im new to this whole duplicate content issue. I have a website, fatcatpaperie.com that I use the portofolio feature in Wordpress as my gallery for all my wedding invitations. I have a ton of duplicate content issues from this. I don't understand at all how to fix this. I'd appreciate any help! Below is an example of one duplicate content issue. They have slightly different names, different urls, different images and all have no text. But are coming up as duplicates. Would it be as easy as putting a different metadescription for each?? Navigation Links Causing Too Many Links Help?
Hello, I have read some SEOMOZ search results for this, but am still concerned that Google may see 4,500 Too Many Link warnings as a problem. This is caused primarily due to our header navigation, which is not intended to be keyword stuffing, but to provide all avenues for our breadth of content. site: crazymikesapps.com. Hello, I am an NLP health coach. I am starting to work with both life threatening illnesses and minor diagnoses. NLP is a type of personal development. I'm wondering what your opinion of the best domain would be, keeping in mind branding, SEO, and usability/rememberability. The term "NLP" is not well known. I will be doing both phone coaching and in-person coaching. My other website (BobWeikel.com) is not very strong because of the lack of keywords in the domain, but it's easy to remember.
