To avoid errors in our Moz crawl, we removed subdomains from our host. (First we tried 301 redirects, also listed as errors.) Now we have backlinks all over the web that are broken. How bad is this, from a pagerank standpoint?

Our MOZ crawl kept telling us we had duplicate page content even though our subdomains were redirected to our main site. (Pages from Wineracks.vigilantinc.com were 301 redirected to vigilantinc.com/wineracks.) Now, to solve that problem, we have removed the wineracks.vigilantinc.com subdomain. The error report is better, but now we have broken backlinks - thousands of them. Is this hurting us worse than the duplicate content problem?

We had a sitewide 301 redirect for the subdomain. This was tested and worked fine, but MOZ considered every page that was redirect as duplicate page content error. So then, we simply deleted the subdomain on the host server. Our error count went down dramatically.
Broken backlinks - which we found through Webmaster Tools - are still going to the subdomain, commercial.vigilantinc.com, and are broken because that no longer exists on our host server. I guess my question is, should we re-establish the subdomain with 301 redirects (which MOZ apparently doesn't recognize) or live with the broken links to our site?

So did commercial.vigilantinc.com/wine-refrigerators.php have a 301 redirect to vigilantinc.com/commercial/wine-refrigerators.php; or did you just have one redirect from commercial.vigilantinc.com to vigilantinc.com/commerical thinking it would also redirect all the subfolders?
If the latter is the case you need to put a 301 redirect on every subfolder of the subdomain, or place a site wide redirect on the subdomain.

What do you mean by a "broken backlink"? How do you know they are broken? Finally, can you provide an example of one?

Were the redirects tested and working? I'm confused why Moz would not be picking up the redirects. Do you have any specific examples of the pages that Moz was reporting as duplicate content?
Is it possible you just redirected the root of the subdomain, rather than every page on the subdomain?
I think it's something that should definitely be addressed. The massive amounts of broken links, and subsequent loss of link equity, could have a more negative impact on your site than the Moz errors that were being picked up.

Bloking pages in roborts.txt that are under a redirected subdomain
Hi Everyone, I have a lot of Marketo landing pages that I don't want to show in SERP. Adding the noindex meta tag for each page will be too much, I have thousands of pages. Blocking it in roborts.txt could have been an option, BUT, the subdomain homepage is redirected to my main domain (with a 302) so I may confuse search engines ( should they follow the redirect or should they block) marketo.mydomain.com is redirected to www.mydomain.com disallow: / (I think this will be confusing with the redirect) I don't have folders, all pages are under the subdomain, so I can't block folders in Robots.txt also Would anyone had this scenario or any suggestions? Impact of Medium blog hosted on my subdomain
I am using the Medium blogging platform to blog, but it is pointed to my site and appears at blog.mysite.com. Since the content is hosted on Medium and pointed to my subdomain via an A Record / CNAME / etc... 1. Will my domain get credit for backlinks to the blog content? 2. If Medium changes in the future and no longer points to my subdomain, will I lose all of the backlinks I've built up?

Automatic subdomain redirection programmed over a given period?
Hi all, I have a technical problem that is quite beyond my "expertise", and I'm wondering if someone can help me to find a way to handle this. My website automatically changes appearance and some content as well twice a year (summer and winter), and we also change the sub domain, like this: September to may > www.nameofmysite.com and june to august > summer.nameofmysite.com I know it's a bit tricky, and we're doing this with a 303 redirection and will also provide a possibility (via a button) to switch beetwen "seasons". To sum up, during the "summer" I've got: http://summer.nameofmysite.com/webzine/news/name-of-my-page.html and during the "winter": http://www.nameofmysite.com/webzine/news/name-of-my-page.html As you can see, it's the same content, with a temporary redirection 303. 301 Redirect From Dynamic Page To Static
I want to 301 redirect all "id" and "type" numbers from my page dynamic.php page (I have thousands of IDs and thousands of Types) all to a single URL. So for example the following.... www.mysite.com/dynamic.php?id=1&type=5 www.mysite.com/dynamic.php?id=2&type=5 www.mysite.com/dynamic.php?id=3&type=5 www.mysite.com/dynamic.php?id=1&type=6 www.mysite.com/dynamic.php?id=2&type=6 www.mysite.com/dynamic.php?id=3&type=6 ...would all be sent to: www.mysite.com/page.html How can this be done without doing a redirect for each ID/Type?

Rel=cannonical + 301 redirect
Hi All I am currently working on a DotNetNuke site. I have enabled friendly URL's which have changed the url structure from the default setting of TabId=x to whatever the page name is set as. I will use the following page as an example - www.notarealdomain./graphicdesign.aspx Now I would like to know if it would be worth my time to change this to "/graphic-design.aspx through the use of a 301 redirect and/or a rel=can. Looking for some help adding a 301 redirect for my Site
Hi there, I am trying to eliminate the 'www' using a 301 redirect script as I have duplicate page titles for both versions (with and without the 'www') I checked the page authority and found the pages without the 'www' to be ranked higher. For this reason I believe it would be wise to go for this option. I have an .htaccess file, all I need is the code and I should be ok 🙂 Thanks!

404 errors on a 301'd page
I current have a site that when run though a site map tool (screaming frog or xenu) returns a 404 error on a number of pages The pages are indexed in Google and when visited they do 301 to the correct page? why would the sitemap tool be giving me a different result? is it not reading the page correctly?
