Using (duplicate) content in different contexts
-
I have three distinct hosting products, each solving three different problems. While these three products have different features in terms of functionality, they are all built on the same platform. Now, in terms of marketing some features of the platform, f.ex. High Availability, is significant to all of the products. How do I go about to include information about this feature on all product pages without getting penalized for duplicate content?
Is there a way to tell Google that parts of the content on the pages for product 1-3 is duplicated with intent, or duplicated from f.ex. a page that explains the technical aspects of the platform?
-
I guess it might depend a bit on what are the most important features of each product. Are the differences most important or the generic (but important) features across all products more important? If the first then separate pages makes sense, if the second then maybe consolidating onto one page makes more sense. You could also try giving a full feature rundown on your most important/visible product page and then give a shortened version on the other two referencing the first one with a "for a complete rundown of all features" type link.
-
Agreed, but the point isn't that it's hard to create enough unique content; I got unique content up the yingyang My point is that I'm unable to elaborate on (important) key features of a product - on the product page - just because other products share those features. And that's just stupid
-
I know it can be tough but even in the car example I don't think it is so difficult to get unique content. Different cars = different target groups with different interests, needs etc. It forces you to try to get inside the mind of your various target audiences, but that is a good thing right?! I wouldnt often consider trying to hide the content with javascript etc, I am sure you can get enough unique content to make it non duplicate with a bit of brainstorming about what each product means to each group.
-
I've come to the same conclusion myself, but I still find it to be a huge drawback. Consider three different cars, all using the same fantastic engine technology; you won't be able to elaborate on the different landing pages because Google find it to be duplicate content. You would have to link to it, and thus leading the customer to another page, with the engine technology as topic. You'll lose focus, risk losing interest and sales and would have to put a lot of work into maintaining a positive and selling experience just because you want to use key engine features in the content on the actual product page.
A plausible workaround is using an IFRAME and/or JavaScript, but that is not a very nice approach. When Google is measuring (ranking) pages they also skew the web in how we design pages, layouts, content, and IMHO the absence of something like rel canonical for content sections is fueling bad approaches in webdesign. (Read it and weep, Matt)

Hi,
If the 3 products are aimed at solving three different problems then I would think you could write enough unique content for each page that you wont have a problem. Explain what each product is good for, how it differs from the others, what kind of customer it is aimed at etc. As long as you dont have just one unique sentence at the top of each page and then a massive list of features duplicated across the pages you should be ok.

Can forwarding users from one domain to a different domain damage rank and authority of first domain?
Preliminary Explanation: We launched a new website a couple months back but haven't had much luck in Google taking notice. One of the main attractions to our site is an old flash app that was made nearly a decade ago. As the original developer has long ago moved on and we are unable to figure out how to integrate it with our new site, we've been stuck hosting the flash app on a different domain. As such, users who come to our site and want to use the app must immediately navigate away from our site to this other domain. This has caused our primary domain's bounce rate and average site time to plummet while raising it for the other domain. My question: is this damaging our search rank and page authority with Google for this primary domain/site and counter-acting any other positive SEO changes we can make? How much weight does Google give towards bounce rate/average site time spent by users in its overall calculations for search rank and page authority? Our average site time for this primary domain is resting currently at 50-60 seconds, while for the secondary domain that hosts the old flash app it is 4-5 minutes.

Duplicate Content Issue: Mobile vs. Desktop View
Setting aside my personal issue with Google's favoritism for Responsive websites, which I believe doesn't always provide the best user experience, I have a question regarding duplicate content... I created a section of a Wordpress web page (using Visual Composer) that shows differently on mobile than it does on desktop view. This section has the same content for both views, but is formatted differently to give a better user experience on mobile devices. I did this by creating two different text elements, formatted differently, but containing the same content. The problem is that both sections appear in the source code of the page. According to Google, does that mean I have duplicate content on this page?

What do you use for test rendering your dev site?
I'm redesigning our company ecommerce site and need to test render an infinite scroller to ensure that it is as SEO friendly as possible. My problem is that I cannot view it in Webmaster Tools since I am blocking the site from crawlers using robots.txt. I know I could simply unblock Google temporarily but I really would rather not make my dev site available to search engine crawlers.

How much does on-site duplicated content affect SERPs?
Hi, We've recently gotten into Moz, with our E-commerce websites, and discovered that it's crawler takes note of about 2500 pages which it thinks are the same (duplicated). We've now begun to completely rewrite every description of every product (including Meta Title/Description) so that this number may be reduced. Since this is the biggest issue Moz spots I'm wondering what the effect of fixing it will be on our position in the SERP (mainly Google). Does anybody have some stories or experience about this topic? Thanks in Advance! 🙂 Alexander

Using H1 in a carousel
Hi, I have a homepage with a carousel rotator that has text in it. My question is what's the best practice in using H1 tags within the carousel. Will placing H1 tags in each be considered excessive H1 use and if so can this still cause SEO problems? Thank you

Hi Everybody. I have a large site that is made up of the main site then a large support site. The support site has a lot of overlapping content and similar titles. Would it be beneficial to separate the two? Thank you. All answers appreciated.

Duplicate content on mobile sites
Hi Guys We are launching a mobile webshop later this year and have decided to use a subdomain for this. (m.domainname.xx). The content will be more or less identical with the one on the standard desktop site (domainname.xx), but im struggeling to find out if this will create dipplicate content between the mobile and desktop site. Does anyone have a solid answer for this one?
