URL Structure Change - 301 Redirect - on large website
-
Hi Guys,
I have a website which has approximately 15 million pages indexed. We are planning to change url structure of 99.99% of pages but it would remain on same domain.
eg: older url: xyz.com/nike-shoes; new url: xyx.com/shopping/nike-shoes
A benefit that we would get is adding a related and important keyword in url. We also achieve other technical benefits in identifying the page type before hand and can reduce time taken to serve the pages (as per our tech team).
For older URLs, we are planning to do a 301 redirect. While this seems to be the correct thing to do as per Google, we do see that there is a very large number of cases where people have suffered significantly on doing something like this :
Here are our questions:
- Will all page rank value will be passed to new url? (i.e. will there be a 100% passing of PR/link juice to the new URLs)
- Can it lower my rank for keywords? (currently we have pretty good rankings (1-5) on many keywords)
- If there is an impact on rankings - will it be only on specific keywords or will we see a sitewide impact?
- Assuming that we have taken a hit on traffic, How much time would it take to get the traffic back to normal? and if traffic goes down, by what percentage it may go down and for how much time. (best case, average case and worst case scenarios)
- Is there anything I should keep in mind while doing this?
I understand that there are no clear answers that can be given to these questions but we would like to evaluate a worst case/best case situation.
Just to give context : Even a 10 day downtime in terms of drops in rankings is extremely detrimental for our business.

PixelKicks gave a good answer.
In theory you shouldn't see much, if any, change in rankings, but in practice, any time you move pages, there is some risk. I don't know if you can do a slow migration or not, but if you can, I'd suggest you do the following.
Start small:
Move a portion of the pages (maybe a couple hundred thousand for your big site) first, track their traffic and ranking and see if there is any impact. I'd probably watch the pages for 3-4 weeks just to make sure. If you see a drop, you may want to keep watching them longer to see if it comes back on its own. This should give you an indication of what to expect for the other pages.Setup Canonical Tags First
If you are able, setup the new pages (or entire new site) and then add canonical tags to all the old pages, pointing to the new pages. This will actually start the transition process for Google and others and you may see the pages with canonical tags having been switched in Google in just a few days. After you have seen that most or all the pages have been switched in Google, then setup the 301 redirects. You can see Rand talking about this process in the video on this page: http://moz.com/blog/cross-domain-canonical-the-new-301-whiteboard-friday
How Long to Recover:
You may not see any drop in rankings. You may see a little shifting for a few days, but then everything settles back to where it was. If you do see a drop, it's likely that it will recover after a few weeks or months (as PixelKicks indicated). If, on the other hand, you see a drop and it doesn't self-correct after several weeks, then the recovery is a matter of having to rebuild some authority to your site. The time that will take will depend on how much work you put in to doing that and what your competition is like.Good luck. That's a huge site.

301's will pass "most" of the value, typically 90%, and you shouldn't see any long term impact from this. However you might notice a bit of short-term action from the changes, particuarly as you have around 15 million pages indexed. Whats the website? Will be interesting to take a look.
I don't think anyone can honestly say what the exact impact will be, but large sites do undergo changes such as what you mention, and you rarely hear reports of long-term pain. As long as you make sure that everything is correctly redirected then you probably won't notice much of a difference.
If you pushed for a definitive answer though I'd estimate within 3 months everything should be steady and back to normal again, and from then onwards you can judge whether the additional keywords have had any impact.
Cheers.

Same URL-Structure & the same number of URLs indexed on two different websites - can it lead to a Google penalty?
Hey guys. I've got a question about the url structure on two different websites with a similar topic (bith are job search websites). Although we are going to publish different content (texts) on these two websites and they will differ visually, the url structure (except for the domain name) remains exactly the same, as does the number of indexed landingpages on both pages. For example, www.yyy.com/jobs/mobile-developer & www.zzz.com/jobs/mobile-developer. In your opinion, can this lead to a Google penalty? Thanks in advance!

Our client has 4 ecommerce sites (Sites A, B, C & D) all selling the same products.
He wishes to to merge all 4 sites into a single site (Site A) Options
In order to maintain maximum SEO authority do we: A - Choose a single site (B, C, or D) with the most SEO authority/juice/power and 301 re-direct it into Site A
Or
B – 301 re-direct all 3 sites (B, C & D) into Site A Our experience says that 301’ing from a single site works well, but from multiple sites feels spammy and risky. Really keen too hear your thoughts.1 -

Tracking URLS and Redirects
We have a client with many archived newsletters links that contain tracking code at the end of the URL. These old URLs are pointing to pages that don't exist anymore. Is there a way to set up permanent redirects for these old URLs with tracking code? We have tried and it doesn't seem to work. Thank you!

301 Redirecting an Entire Site
I have a question which has had me thinking for hours..... If SITE A is ranking well on a number of search phrases and you 301 that site to another (SITE B). The site will change on the Google SERPs to the site which you've re-directed to... In this case SITE B. But how do you maintain the rankings of SITE A?. Do you keep the rankings of SITE A forever? Or will your rankings of SITE A (now SITE B) gradually slip as other sites rank higher? As you can no longer edit SITE A does Google take into consideration the content on SITE B and no longer take anything that SITE A had to offer into consideration? SITE B has simply replaced it in the SERPs??...... Please can anybody help? Thanks,

New website from scratch and redirects or maintaining domain?
Hi friends, I have to face a big challenge. My client has an online store with about 250 products. The store is based on a web service provider whose CMS gives critical duplicate content issues. My client is considering to rethink the store from scratch and choose a CMS that offers more guarantees. I have two options: Starting the store from scratch with new domain and make redirects (whole domain or page to page?) Maintaining the domain, careful to keep the current structure of the URL, which is currently pretty bad I hope you could help me. Thanks in advance.

Redirect Help - Domain Change and Website Redesign
Hi there, I've redesigned a website for a client, but we are also changing domains and I'm trying to figure out the best way to set up the redirects from their old domain to the new one. 95% of their search engine traffic originally came through brand related keywords that landed on their homepage, and most of the remaining 15% landed on 3 other pages. The new site has pages to replace these 3 main SEO pages, and I'm about to set 301 redirects from their old domain, but I can't figure out the quickest/best way to do it. Is it possible to set up a specific redirect for the 4 main pages (Home + plus the 3 others) then a "catch all" type of thing for the rest of the pages, that redirect either to the homepage, or some sort of "Check out our new Site" landing page. How do you do this, or is there a better way to set it up? Thanks!

Redirecting Canonical 301s and Magento Website
I have an issue with a client's website where it has 3700+ pages, but roughly half of them are duplicates. Thankfully, the only difference between the original and the duplictes is the "?print" at the end of each URL (I suppose this is Magento's way of making a printable page version of the same page. I don't know, I didn't build it.) My questions is, how can I get all the pages like this http://www.mycompany.com/blah.html?print to redirect to pages like this... http://www.mycompany.com/blah.html Also, do they NEED to be Canonical, or will a 301 redirect be sufficient. Also, after having done this, if anybody knows, is there a way I can turn that feature off in Magento, because we're expanding our product line, and I don't want to have to keep chasing after these "?print" pages after the fact.
