To 301 redirect or not...

Hi guys i'd like to get your opinion on this.
We currently have two sites, site A is the old one with PA44 and DA33. Site B is the new one which is going to replace site A it currently has PA37 and DA24
Our plan for the future is to shut down site A and redirect all pages using 301 to the relevant pages on side B. Currently we have some links in place for a couple of keywords on site A to site B which seems to be working great for our ranking.
Now i'm wondering if this is maybe a good option, to give back links from A to B or will i pass through more link juice when redirecting everything?
(ps. both are e commerce sites hosted and registred with different companies)

Yes site a was a victim of Penguin last december but has been cleaned up since. But i will de double checking before we 301 everything

Does Site A also have a clean Link profile? Doing a 301 will pass any bad links over to the new site. FYI

Hi,
A hit as in raise the authority. It's recommended that you 301 over time anyway so it sounds like you've got a plan that's going to work well. Hummingbird unfortunately isn't going to remove top spots as its not what its aim is. Penguin 2.1 may as its a bit more focused on spam removal.

Hi guys, thanks for your feedback. Site A is very similar to B as it sells the same products (same company). B is the brand name of the company so it's only logical to use that. Site B has a pretty clean linking profile with only few links at the moment. The link i pointed from site A pushed one of our main keywords to 4th place in page one hence i'm slightly reluctant to 301 everything right away
But i guess this wouldn't undo our results if done correctly. I'm also thinking some of the movement in ranking might have to do with hummingbird which might be finally taking down our competitors that where lucky enough to escape penguin.Also Chris, can you explain what you mean by "a bit of a hit on authority" do you mean a positive hit or do you recon it will go down first and then back up?

All though many argue total white hat not to interlink if you do redirect SITE A to site B you will find a bit of a hit on site B's authority. I've seen it done a few times and work well especially if the content it the same/similar. 301 is telling Google "this is the permanent new home of this page".
If you're planning on shutting down Site A and Site B is similar content I don't see why a 301 wouldn't work.
301 and links technically work about the same on passing link juice its more a case of what work better for the situation.
As touched on by Gary whilst this is great it can also have longer term problems though that's not a guarantee that your page will rank. It depends if you want to stay completely white hat or more a bit more grey though if you ask me there is no white hat only shades of grey..
As I always recommend lots of research and advice never hurt and once you've got it all you can then work on an informed choice.

Its not a great Idea to interlink in the first place and you can get a Google Penalty for that.
301 Redirecting can be very powerful as the links that point to Site A will now point to site B directly. Plus all the links that site B might already have.
One powerful site is better than two not getting full attention.
However as I have said many times, Google is on a rampage and it seems wise to have a backup site these days if you get hit by a penalty.

Forced Redirects/HTTP<>HTTPS 301 Question
Hi All, Sorry for what's about to be a long-ish question, but tl;dr: Has anyone else had experience with a 301 redirect at the server level between HTTP and HTTPS versions of a site in order to maintain accurate social media share counts? This is new to me and I'm wondering how common it is. I'm having issues with this forced redirect between HTTP/HTTPS as outlined below and am struggling to find any information that will help me to troubleshoot this or better understand the situation. If anyone has any recommendations for things to try or sources to read up on, I'd appreciate it. I'm especially concerned about any issues that this may be causing at the SEO level and the known-unknowns. A magazine I work for recently relaunched after switching platforms from Atavist to Newspack (which is run via WordPress). Since then, we've been having some issues with 301s, but they relate to new stories that are native to our new platform/CMS and have had zero URL changes. We've always used HTTPS. Basically, the preview for any post we make linking to the new site, including these new (non-migrated pages) on Facebook previews as a 301 in the title and with no image. This also overrides the social media metadata we set through Yoast Premium. I ran some of the links through the Facebook debugger and it appears that Facebook is reading these links to our site (using https) as redirects to http that then redirect to https. I was told by our tech support person on Newspack's team that this is intentional, so that Facebook will maintain accurate share counts versus separate share counts for http/https, however this forced redirect seems to be failing if we can't post our links with any metadata. (The only way to reliably fix is by adding a query parameter to each URL which, obviously, still gives us inaccurate share counts.) This is the first time I've encountered this intentional redirect thing and I've asked a few times for more information about how it's set up just for my own edification, but all I can get is that it’s something managed at the server level and is designed to prevent separate share counts for HTTP and HTTPS. Has anyone encountered this method before, and can anyone either explain it to me or point me in the direction of a resource where I can learn more about how it's configured as well as the pros and cons? I'm especially concerned about our SEO with this and how this may impact the way search engines read our site. So far, nothing's come up on scans, but I'd like to stay one step ahead of this. Hello Moz Community, I have a question regarding 301 redirecting a new domain that contains keywords relevant to my website. However, I do NOT want to change my current domain. My main question is, by just redirecting this new domain to my current website, will those keywords in the new domain help with ranking in anyway? Thanks in advance for any help!

Should I consolidate multiple domains to a single site with 301 redirects?
Our client wants all his sites to be re-designed and perhaps consolidated into one domain. What are the dangers of using 301s on all his already ranking and established domains to their new forward-slash location? If there are some good articles that describe this exact issue please post a link.

Creating a CSV file for uploading 301 redirect URL map
Hi if i'm bulk uploading 301 redirects whats needed to create a csv file? is it just a case of creating an excel spreadsheet & have the old urls in column A and new urls in column B and then just convert to csv and upload ? or do i need to put in other details or paremeters etc etc ? Cheers Dan

301 redirect problems on site not yet moved
I have re-designed one of my sites, the old site is all static pages on a Windows server, I have made the new sites and it is on a new server and is running on Wordpress. I have just finished testing it and so am nearly ready to switch over the nameservers to the new server, however I'm having some problems with 301 redirects. I have tried to set up a few 301 redirects on the new server to test before I change nameservers but they don't appear to be working. I would have imagined that they should (even though the actual page isn't hosted on the new server) or am I being very stupid here and I can't test a 301 redirect until the nameservers have been changed. Redirect 301 /magazines.htm http://.../~account/magazine-freebies Obviously the above with the stars (*) is the server address and route to my account.
