Changing Structure of Links... Yay or Nay?
-
Hello there,
My site: MigrationLawyers.co.za was made with no sub structure.
It has no categories, and no child pages, all the pages are simply added to the end of the URL.
Sometimes this results in a rather lengthy URL like:
**/Immigration-Permanent-Residence-Work-Permit-South-**Africa
I was hoping to arrange the pages a bit into a logical, parented structure that looks more like:
**/Immigration/Permanent-Residence/Work-Permit-South-**Africa I would have parented pages, making up the same pretty much URLNow the Questions:
Is it worth it?
Will google read my parented URL with all the keywords, or only the page's keywords?
What should I expect to see from google?
Will my SERPs be all messed up?I will, without doubt, 301 redirect all the old URLs to the new parented ones.
Any advice would be great,
Thanks,
Nikita -
In my own experience, good category names are very, very important. Have you prioritized your top 10 or 20 keyword search phrases? Those should be worked into your top level categories. I have recently seen reasonable benefits from redesigning categories and subcategories, and of course 301 redirecting popular old ones to the new ones diligently.

I agree with Martijn and based on what I see from your examples you should do with this one: **/Immigration/Permanent-Residence/Work-Permit-South-**Africa
In regards to your questions:
Is it worth it? - yes it does
Will google read my parented URL with all the keywords, or only the page's keywords? - Google will take into higher consideration the folder that is closer to your domain name. With your new structure I suspect you would promote the page with the "Immigration" keywords which includes "permanent residence" as one of the many services your "immigration" page includes. Same goes for your work permit. This is how google will see it while at the moment it sees one authoritative page which includes the whole keyword. As Martjin said it really depends in how many pages/services you got.
What should I expect to see from google? - I have witness slight improvement in rankings (+2-3 positions) after I Implemented url re-structuring and schema but I have mainly worked in property related web sites so not sure if this an exception or rule. Someone with an e-commerce web site (where there url structure is a must) could give us his insights in terms of improvements as in every single e-commerce site I have worked, I always made sure the url was structured properly from scratch so I do not have an insight in terms of "improving" rankings.
Will my SERPs be all messed up? - Not messed up but you might end up with lots of 404. Make sure you set redirects from the old URLs to the new Ones. Again it depends the web site. From my experience I changed 4 in the past and only one popped loads of 404s but that was mainly due to a plug in that was displaying search results based on unique criteria, something I could not control.Hope this helps!

Hi Nikita,
How many pages we're talking about for this site? If it's not to many (<50-100) I would say leave it like this, it probably wouldn't be worth the hustle to redirect the old pages to the new ones. As also the page urls will stay the same based on keywords I wouldn't waste my time on this for small sites. If we're talking about hundreds/ thousand of pages than it's another problem and I would say it could hurt the way Google gives you crawl budget.

HTTPs to HTTP Links
Hi Mozers, I have a question about the news that Google Chrome will start blocking mixed content starting in December 2019. That starting in December 2019, users that are presented insecure content will be presented a toggle allowing those Chrome users to unblock the insure resources that Chrome is blocking. And in January 2020, Google will remove that toggle option an will just start blocking mixed content or insecure web pages. Not sure what this means. What are the implications of this for a HTTPS page that has an HTTP link? Thanks, Yael

Poor internal linking?
Hi guys, Have a large e-commerce site 10,000 pages as a client and they are currently not getting much organic traffic to their level 3 sub-category pages, the URLs are like: https://www.domain.com.au/category/s...-category-type These pages have been on-page optimised, category content added, yet hardly any traffic. However the site level 1, level 2 pages do quite well. So this suggests this might be an internal linking issue? The site is definitely not penalized and as enough authority for these level 3 pages to rank. Any ideas would be very much appreciated! Cheers.

Can links be hidden?
I was wondering if anyone can help me with some advice on agency work. We have just employed a new SEO agency to conduct work on one of our websites. I took a look on OSE and GWT to see if we had any new links since the agency started working (1 month ago) but there's was nothing new. When l asked for an update as to what link building efforts had been completed last month, l was told they don't give out a list of links as it could compromise the agencies techniques. They told me that they use software to hide links form link aggregators so that our competitors don't know what we are doing. Can anybody confirm that such software exists or is this agency just taking us for a ride? If there is such a software, could this not hinder what links the search engines could see? Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Subdomain Metrics Links??
I have been analysing my companies website against our competitors and we beat them hands down on everything apart from the total links in the subdomain metrics. Our competitor jumped above us a couple of months ago to grab the number one spot for our industries most valuable keyword. They have had a new website designed and after looking at the source code and running it through SEO MOZ in comparison to our site I can't see how they have manged to do it. We beat them hands down on all factors apart from subdomain metrics > Total links where they have twice as many. When it comes to Page Specific Metrics and Root Domain Metrics we easily beat them on all factors. Does anyone have any ideas what I need to do to improve the subdomain metrics? Thanks

What are your thoughts on using Dripable, VitaRank, or similar service to build URL links too dilute link profile???
One of my sites has a very spamy link profile, top 20 anchors are money keywords. What are your thoughts on using Dripable, VitaRank, or similar service to help dilute the link profile by building links with URLs, Click Here, more Info, etc. I have been building URL links already, but due to the site age(over 12 years) the amount of exact match anchor text links is just very large and would take forever to get diluted.
