When do I change out my meta tags after a full website revamp?
-
We're creating a new version of our entire website - look and feel is completely different, though core functionality and results are the same. Just cleaner, faster.. etc. We're doing a temp redirect to the temporary url for testing and to slow roll the release to some of our users for a more friendly approach. Eventually, the new look and feel will be under the original url.
I've researched best practices for the site transfer, including "make sure the meta tags for title and description are exactly the same".
The concern I have is that Moz Analytics is detecting a lot of errors in the existing meta tags. They're too long, have changed and become inconsistent after being passed through different hands, & some have some keyword stuffing in there.
I have plans to change them out and really clean them up... I'm just wondering, when is the best time to do that?
Since the tags are bad, should I just do it now but make sure that the old and new are matching? Or should I wait (and for how long?) after the new site is switched over and everything is on the original URL?

I totally misread that one. Need to lobby for better coffee in the Moz offices!

Thanks so much, everyone! Very helpful.
Yes-- @Ben, you were correct in your assumption. Keep them the same as the old site.
I started revamping the tags for the new site already, as you suggested, so I'll have those ready to go after everything is set and done and being indexed on the new site.
Thank you again!

Ben is correct in assuming that our advice around keeping meta and title tags the same means "from the old site to the new site" and not "as each other."
In general it's a best practice to leave as many things the same as you can when revamping your site. Since you're already changing a lot of stuff it is probably best to leave the meta tag changes until after the relaunch (although Ben's suggestion of beginning to write them now is a good one - that way you'll have the new tags ready to go when you are ready to switch them over).
Once the new site is launched I would wait until it is fully indexed and until you see the new pages from the site ranking instead of the old ones for their target keywords. Then, you might consider a gradual roll-out of the new tags so it's less disruptive while your site is still recovering from the relaunch. Start with pages that either don't rank well, or lost rankings when you switched - this might be a good little boost for those. Wait for those new tags to get cached, then target your high-ranking pages (being sure to retain keyword targeting in the tags even as you fix the errors). If all goes well you should see a positive impact from these changes. Hope that helps!

I was answering on the assumption that "exactly the same" meant "exactly the same as on my old site". Hope I got that assumption correct!

I'm not sure where you're seeing that the title tag and description should be exactly the same. They serve different purposes, and don't need to be the same. We have more information at http://moz.com/beginners-guide-to-seo/basics-of-search-engine-friendly-design-and-development that can help you out.

Working agency-side I've gone through a few of these exercises, and I'd advise doing them as soon as you have the copywriting started. META data takes a surprising length of time to create - a 65 character title tag sounds like it shouldn't take much to write, but precisely because you're so constrained it takes some thought. So when you have your sitemap and know the gist of each page, put together the META data for it.
If you're now onto deployment and its too late for that, I'd say leave it until after the roll out. You got where you are with the titles and descriptions you have - and you have plenty to worry about without adding META data!

Hi All, My website URL is https://thepeopeople.com and it is neither caching nor indexing in Google. Earlier the URL was https://peopeople.com. I have redirected it to https://thepeopeople.com by using 301 redirections. I have checked the redirection and everything else is fine and I have submitted all the URLs in search console also, still the website is not indexing. Its been more than 5 months now. Please suggest a solution for this. Thanks in Advance.

Duplicate content on charity website
Hi Mozers, We are working on a website for a UK charity – they are a hospice and have two distinct brands, one for their adult services and another for their children’s services. They currently have two different websites which have a large number of pages that contain identical text. We spoke with them and agreed that it would be better to combine the websites under one URL – that way a number of the duplicate pages could be reduced as they are relevant to both brands. What seamed like a good idea initially is beginning to not look so good now. We had planned to use CSS to load different style sheets for each brand – depending on the referring URL (adult / Child) the page would display the appropriate branding. This will will work well up to a point. What we can’t work out is how to style the page if it is the initial landing page – the brands are quite different and we need to get this right. It is not such an issue for the management type pages (board of trustees etc) as they govern both identities. The issue is the donation, fundraising pages – they need to be found, and we are concerned that users will be confused if one of those pages is the initial landing page and they are served the wrong brand. We have thought of making one page the main page and using rel canonical on the other one, but that will affect its ability to be found in the search engines. Really not sure what the best way to move forward would be, any suggestions / guidance would be much appreciated. Thanks Fraser .

My beta site (beta.website.com) has been inadvertently indexed. Its cached pages are taking traffic away from our real website (website.com). Should I just "NO INDEX" the entire beta site and if so, what's the best way to do this? Please advise.

How to display the full structure of website on Google serps
I have been searching around but unable to gather information as to how we can control or list top pages of a website on Google's first page , i.e. if we type seomoz in google , we can see the main listing with 6 subdomain listings , which link to Blog , Seo tool , Beginner Seo guide , Learn Seo , Pricing & Plans and login My question is can we control these listings i.e. what to display and what not , and if yes how can we make this type of visibility on first page , by using html or xml sitemaps or theirs something mostly websites are missing. Cause this type of data is coming up for very less websites and mostly websites are with single urls. c43Ki.jpg

Duplicate Title Tags and Meta Desc even with the correct Canonical Tag
I show a large/growing number of duplicate title tags and duplicate meta descriptions in my webmaster tools. I look at both pages Link 1 - http://www.thatsmytopper.com/wedding-cake-toppers/theme-cake-toppers/beach-theme-cake-toppers/where/color/petal-pink.html Link 2 - http://www.thatsmytopper.com/wedding-cake-toppers/theme-cake-toppers/beach-theme-cake-toppers/where/color/petal-pink/limit/16.html Both pages have the following canonical url: <link rel="<a class="attribute-value">canonical</a>" href="http://www.thatsmytopper.com/wedding-cake-toppers/theme-cake-toppers/beach-theme-cake-toppers.html" > Why does this show up as a duplicate title tag and description to Google still?

Use of Multiple Tags
Hi, I have been monitoring some of the authority sites and I noticed something with one of them. This high authority site suddenly started using multiple tags for each post. And I mean, loads of tags, not just three of four. I see that each post comes with at least 10-20 tags. And these tags don't always make sense either. Let's say there is a video for "Bourne Legacy", they list tags like bourne, bourney legacy, bourne series, bourne videos, videos, crime movies, movies, crime etc. They don't even seem to care about duplicate content issues. Let's say the movie is named The Dragon, they would inclue dragon and the-dragon in tags list and despite those two category pages(/dragon and /the-dragon) being exactly the same now, they still wouldn't mind listing both the tags underneath the article. And no they don't use canonical tag. (there isn't even a canonical meta on any page of that site) So I am curious. Do they just know they have a very high DA, they don't need to worry about duplicate content issues? or; I am missing something here? Maybe the extra tags are doing more good than harm?
