Avoid Keyword Self-Cannibalization
-
I'm working on the SEO for a page on my website for using a specific keyword.
When I do the on page grader, It has unticked - 'Avoid Keyword Self-Cannibalization'.
What is the best way to sort this issue? I've noticed that the page is using 2 URLs - does this play a role with this and my ranking in Google?

Julian,
As TextureMediainc says keyword cannibalization occurs when you target the same keyword on multiple pages. It may also occur when different keywords/key phrases are very similar or share the same words, "67 mustang" and "67 ford mustang", for example or "pink wedding dresses" and "pink wedding dresses with straps"
Keep in mind, too, that the On-page Grader report you are looking at is specific to the keyword you entered into the keyword field when you run the report If you change the keyword, you may get a different result. For example, you may grade one of your category pages for the keyword "wedding dress" and find that it indicates you need to address cannibalization (and you get a grade of "A") but if you grade the same page for "pink wedding dress, you'll may find that it doesn't (but that you grade of "F").
Be sure to look at your site's keywords hierarchically, with your most competitive keywords toward the top of the hierarchy (homepage); that each category of the site has a specific keyword reason for being it's own category; and that the keywords of category sub pages fit logically and distinctly within the category.

Hi Julian,
Can you explain what you mean by "the page is using 2 URLs" ? Usually keyword cannibalization occurs when you target the same keyword on multiple pages. If Moz is showing this unticked box it is probably because it found an instance of this on your site.
I recommend limiting your keyword targeting to one page. If you want to build a lot of content around one keyword, do this carefully. Aim for long tail keywords, different variations, and support content. Example: I am targeting the keyword "dance shoes" for a page that sells "dance shoes." I want to create extra content to support this page, so I write a couple of blog posts about "how to keep your dance shoes clean" or "ways to extend the life of your dance shoes." etc.
Hope this helps.

Words order in keywords phrase
Hello, I read that Google can "read" in all directions a while ago. Does this mean that keyword quires "Santa Monica appliance repair" and "appliance repair Santa Monica" are the same? Would you track both of them, or tracking only one would be enough? Thank you!

Self Referencing Links - Good or Bad?
As an agency we get quite a few of our clients come to us saying "Ooo, this company just contacted me saying they've run an SEO report on my site and we need to improve on these following things" We had one come through the other day that had reported on something we had not seen in any others before. They called them self-referencing links and marked it as a point of action should be taken. They had stated that 100% of the pages on our clients website had self-referencing links. The definition of self-referencing is when there is a link on a page that is linking to the page you are currently on. So for example you're on the home page and there is a link in the nav bar at the top that says "Home" with a link to the home page, the page you are already currently on. Is it bad practice? And if so can we do anything about it as it would seem strange from a UI point of view not to have a consistent navigation. I have not heard anything about this before but I wanted to get confirmation before going back to our client and explaining. Thanks Mozzers!

Redesigning client website and will be losing a lot of landing pages. How to avoid tanking search traffic?
We are working with a client who is changing the direction of the company's marketing efforts. The current site includes many (approx 100) pages for each partner they work with (each partner has its own page). The new site will be losing many of these and we want to be sure we don't destroy organic traffic/rankings in the process. These landing pages don't directly garner the most traffic but it will definitely be a big change in the size of the site. Any advice for how to best handle the redesign is appreciated, thanks!

Does Google think My main keyword is my Company name due to over use in anchor text?
OK, i have recently noticed google is adding a keyword to my titles... I have attached an image which shows the results from a google site:mywebsite search... 8 out of the 10 results on the screen shot clearly have the keyword ( - CCTV Cameras) added to the end of the title. Now a lot of those pages are support pages i.e "Help & Support", "returns" etc etc.. nothing really to do with cctv cameras. The only thing i can think of, is the most common anchor text used on backlinks to my website (according to siteexplorer) is the keyword cctv cameras... (i am currently working on removing a load of the backlinks to my site due to what i think is some kind of google penalty as the anchor text is all keywords etc...) But it seems strange if google has started to discount these backlinks, that it then uses that keyword to add to my titles - unless of course, google thinks that it is my brand name... Any body have any thoughts on this? FqwooQY.gif

Using video transcripts v captions and avoiding duplicate content?
Part 1: After editing a You Tube transcript, I typically re-upload as a caption file (with time codes)...for SEO does it matter whether you upload as a transcript v. captions? Is one better than the other? Part 2: If you upload a transcript (or caption) to YouTube, then post that video/transcript in your blog, wouldn't you get pinged for duplicate content?

Title tag keyword prioritizing
It's widely accepted that in title tags, the first word ranks the highest, and each word after that contributes less than the one before. So a page with the title "Philadelphia Parks" will rank higher than "Parks in Philadelphia" for Philadelphia, but the second page will rank higher for Parks. With this in mind, which keywords should I put first in the title tags of my product pages? Brand name? Product SKU? Is it better to prioritze general words with higher search volume (more impressions) or more specific terms with lower search volume (stronger long tail)? Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks
