Does linking to a div pass value to the base url?
-
hi,
because of how my site is laid out, in many cases, it makes sense from a user experience standpoint to link to a specific
id rather than to the base url (and the top of the page).
for internal links on my site, will linking to http://domain.com/page/#div pass the same link value as linking to http://domain.com/page/ ? or am i shooting myself in the foot with this approach?
thanks, Moz buddies!

All redirects lose link juice, Gregory is correct in what he says, but you would lose a bit of link juice in the redirect, better to use the anchor, it is ignored

Hi RealGoodsSolar,
My understanding is that using a self-referential canonical tag in the Head section will cause the link value for any version of that URL to accumulate for the base URL.
So for page www.mydomain.com/inner-page.html , using this tag in the head:
causes incoming links with tail-end variations like:
www.mydomain.com/inner-page.html#id2 or www.mydomain.com/inner-page.html?searchresult3
to all count towards www.mydomain.com/inner-page.html
Good luck!

I agree with Andy. I wouldn't expect any issues with an anchor. I'm pretty sure Google would ignore it. Although using a query string parameter (?) would not be good.
Anyway, Google Analytics allows you to track parameters using an anchor and some think that this is a good way of consolidating link juice and avoiding duplicate content issues.

I can't see how linking to a specific anchor on a page is going to lessen any link juice than linking just to the page itself, and even if it did, the user experience is always going to be important.
Perhaps someone has some actual testing or confirmation of this, but I can't say I have come across any issues.

Should we use URL parameters or plain URL's=
Hi, Me and the development team are having a heated discussion about one of the more important thing in life, i.e. URL structures on our site. Let's say we are creating a AirBNB clone, and we want to be found when people search for apartments new york. As we have both have houses and apartments in all cities in the U.S it would make sense for our url to at least include these, so clone.com/Appartments/New-York but the user are also able to filter on price and size. This isn't really relevant for google, and we all agree on clone.com/Apartments/New-York should be canonical for all apartment/New York searches. But how should the url look like for people having a price for max 300$ and 100 sqft? clone.com/Apartments/New-York?price=30&size=100 or (We are using Node.js so no problem) clone.com/Apartments/New-York/Price/30/Size/100 The developers hate url parameters with a vengeance, and think the last version is the preferable one and most user readable, and says that as long we use canonical on everything to clone.com/Apartments/New-York it won't matter for god old google. I think the url parameters are the way to go for two reasons. One is that google might by themselves figure out that the price parameter doesn't matter (https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/1235687?hl=en) and also it is possible in webmaster tools to actually tell google that you shouldn't worry about a parameter. We have agreed to disagree on this point, and let the wisdom of Moz decide what we ought to do. What do you all think?

How to link my websites with each other - to avoid google penalities and get some value
I have good high DA PA websites hosted on same IP, added in same google analytics and GWT account. So i think google knows that owner is the same. How should we link them with each other to get some value? Put nofollow? With what anchor (Money keyword or domain name)? But whats the point? We cannot make natural link building profile with our own website nofollow links, i assume they will not count. What can you suggest? Maybe it is better not to link at all?

Value of Newspaper Comment Links
Although most newspaper comment sections are a no-follow zone, I have noticed that some comments I have posted with links end up being followed. The comments are participatory and the links relevant and even add to the conversation. My theory is that some comments are monitored and if the editors are looking to encourage discussion and don't feel like your spamming, why not take the no follow off. I do plan on doing some testing with poor, spammy comments on the same papers but am encouraged and would like to know what other people have found.
