Customer Testimonial Question
-
Hi All,
Over time we have provided our services to many clients big and small.
As part of my new website I'm looking to create a simple icon thumbnail slide show on the home page. The slide show will show new customers a icon image of the companies we have helped. My Question
Naturally, we have a full email audit of communication and works being completed for each client. Can I simply place the client icon my slide show without their permission?Regards Mark

Hi William and Jennifer,
Thank you for your words of wisdom.

I am a lawyer, but I am not going to provide you with legal advice. What I am going to provide you with is PR advice. It is always best to get permission. You don't want a client to contact you and ask you to remove it, or even worse write a review on Google+ or somewhere else stating how badly you treated it (even if you didn't treat it badly.)
You also can avoid any potential legal problems by getting permission first.
-
That would be helpful. Something along the lines of, "Any logos used on our client list are logos of companies we've directly worked for. If you represent one of these companies and would like your logo remove, please contact us at: blah"
It shows you're making a little more of an effort, but it still isn't ideal. Permission to use a logo is often just an email away, once you find the right person to email or call.

Hi William,
Interesting points ... Thank you.
In order to avoid the admin overhead trying to locate an authority within the company to sanction the use of there company icon, could I just do the following.
Within my T&C's state wording to the effect that allows me to use there company icon if we have carried out works for them. Additionally offer a removal request procedure by letter or email.
Regards Mark

If it's a major corporation, there should be a PR department or "Press" section of their site that should give you a good place to start your search. Most brands are fine with you using their logo like that, but double-checking is important. Some brands coughRealtorcough are insane with how you use their brand, so checking is recommended.
At the same time, if you can't get ahold of them and you still use their logo and they don't like it, you'll just receive a DMCA-esque letter asking you to remove it. I don't recommend doing it this way, but in the past, the worst I've seen is a take-down notice.

Hi Dean,
I think the article is a little overkill in my situation.
The article focuses on T&C's allowing the owner to intellectual property rights on any and all content.Thank you for the article.

Interesting article here: http://motionographer.com/2013/04/23/how-to-make-sure-you-can-show-work-in-your-portfolio/ Not exactly your question but in principle the same.

Hi Dean,
On occasions when dealing with blue chip companies, we help as a geo or branch level.
Additionally, Branch managers/ Area Managers or authors of the task don't necessarily have this level of authority. Trying to contact the most suitable person within the organisation is like a needle in a haystack.I look forward to further advice.

I'm no legal beagle but just because you have completed work for someone doesn't entitle you to use their logo. Why don't you just ask them, if you have done a great job I'm sure they won't have an issue with it.

Adding Google Reviews to Testimonials Page
Can anyone verify if it is allowable to add Google reviews to your testimonials page? I know you can't use schema on these reviews. If it is allowable, should these be images so that they don't get indexed and flag duplicate content? Thank you in advance for your help. Rita

Best process for asking customers to leave reviews?
This might be too off-topic for Moz, but I think many of us might face the same issue, so I thought I would ask. Love them or hate them, we get 90% of our business from being #1 on Trip Advisor. My biggest competition is trying very hard to take over that #1 spot, so we are working to keep it. Has anyone found a seamless way to ask customers for TripAdvisor reviews? We email, text, ask over the phone. But here the problem, Trip Advisor is not the easiest site to leave a review on. If you are on your phone, they want you download the app. Some people don't like to download apps. Or, if they have the app already and click "yes" to open the site in the app, it goes to the app store instead. There doesn't seem to be as much of an issue on the PC, but most people do everything from their phones now. And if something is a little bit hard, people are less likely to go out of their way to leave a review. So, here's my question. Has anyone found a better way? Maybe a form on my website? Or a process that seems to work better? This does have some SEO implications in that my Trip Advisor page does show up in search results quite a bit as well as much home page. Sometimes they are #2 and #3 together.

Customers can review business on New Google Plus
Google Plus for businesses has switched to a new Google+ page that does not have a "WRITE A REVIEW" button available for customers to leave a review for a business. This is preventing us from sending a link to our Google Plus business page directly to customers soliciting a review for our business. Has anyone else noticed this update migration and does anyone have a work around for how to send a link to our customers so they can leave a review on our Google+ business page?

Reusing reviews from other sites for branded rich snippet taken from brands testimonial page
Hi my customer has had a new website built for their custom home building company which has a testimonials page http://www.precisionhomes.com.au/testimonials.html This testimonials page has duplicate review content taken from another dedicated review site http://www.productreview.com.au/p/precision-homes.html My question is this, if I add review microdata to http://www.precisionhomes.com.au/testimonials.html will google recognize this in Rich snippets and the Brands Knowledge Graph or will it just consider it duplicate content?

Customer Reviews inputted by a single person
We send out a product review survey through an email after a purchase has been made. It is okay that we input those in manually ourselves when they are returned? They are legitimate reviews. I want to make sure it doesn't send a red flag to search engines since the same person inputs them from the same computer and IP address. Thanks in advance for your inputs.

Panda Question on Aggregated Testimonials - Need Input
Hello Moz Friends, I am investigating some online reputation management tools to help boost testimonials across the web for my various business locations. One thing I am finding is that many tools offer syndicated and aggregated content that can be displayed within our website for that location from various review sites across the web. My question is, will this type of aggregated content have a negative impact on our site, considering Google Panda is aggressively going after sites with thin content, aggregated content, etc.? I like the idea of showcasing positive testimonial from across the web on that business location's website testimonials page, but do not want to do it if it will ultimately lead to a penalty and site devaluing. Does anyone have any insight into whether or not aggregated testimonials on one page of our site will have a negative impact overall, a negative impact on just that one page's ranking ability, or should have no affect?

Yelp Review From My Customer Removed
Hi, A customer of mine told me she created a yelp account just to give me a review. She's a good customer and wanted to show me her appreciation. I thanked her for taking the trouble. About a week later, I see that her review was marked as "not recommended." This was a legitimate review made by a real customer. I'm angry that it was removed for no reason. I noticed a competitor of mine has 18 yelp reviews and all of them show up just fine. I also noticed that this same competitor is paying for ads from Yelp. A couple of years ago, another customer reviewed me on yelp and it was also labeled as "not recommended." So I now have 2 "not recommended" reviews on Yelp that, if you ask me, imply that my reviews are fake. After Yelp and Yahoo merged, I lost the 14 Yahoo reviews I had obtained from customers over the last six years. I have also noticed over the years, that whenever I need to sign into my Yelp business account to update the data, it's locked until some pushy sales person calls and asks to speak to me in order to try to sell me ads on Yelp. Anyone else hate Yelp? They're obviously not really interested in making sure reviews are "real," they're just interested in selling expensive ads.

SCHEMA Review Markup Check & Questions
Hi, I have a few questions about our SCHEMA for user-submitted business reviews. Here's what I have so far: User Review Reviewer Name Business Name

05/14/2014 5 1. Am I missing anything? 2. Is the itemReviewed tag necessary? 3. If a category/results page has multiple businesses listed and shows their ratings, is marking the businesses up as you would on their individual page okay? What about the ratings? I have a feeling marking the ratings would confuse Google, but the businesses themselves (NAP) should be alright, correct? 4. General Q: Is it alright to have multiple reviewBody tags within one review? For instance, if the review is split into 2 parts and additional code/content is between them that isn't part of the review, can we just add multiple reviewBody tags within the same main div tag? Thanks!0
