Product Documentation Causing 23-40K issues
-
One of my biggest hurdles at my company is our Product Documentation library, which houses thousands of pages of publicly accessible and indexed content on old and new versions of our product. Every time a product name changes the URL changes, causing a 404, so I typically have 100s of 404s every few months from this site. It's housed off our main domain. We have 23,000+ Duplicate Pages, 40,000 missing meta descriptions, and 38,000 due to this library. It is not built the same as our main content, with page titles and meta descriptions, so everything is defaulted and duplicate. I'm trying to make a case that this is an issue, especially as we migrate our site next year to a new CMS.
Does anyone have any suggestions for dealing with this issue in the short term and long term? Is it worth asking the owners of the section of content to develop page titles and meta descriptions on 40,000 pieces of content? They do not see the value of SEO and the issues this can cause.
It needs to be publicly accessible, but it's not highly ranked content. It's really for customers who want to know more about the product. But I worry it is hurting other parts of our site, with the absurd amount of duplicate content, meta, and page title issues.

Hi there,
As far as your platform goes, product name changes simply shouldn't be causing 404s and this can be (relatively) easily bypassed by introducing the product id to the end of the URL. The name can then change but the product id remains the identifier for the product to load on the page.
With regards to your 40K pages without meta titles or descriptions, it's going to be almost impossible to fix that manually. It sounds as though you need to establish a business case, which could be done by fixing a few hundred of them (based on the ones that get the most traffic) and seeing if it has any improvement. This might not have an impact though as it sounds as though they aren't doing well in SEO as it is, although I agree there's a chance that these poorly optimised pages might be hurting your overall rankings.
The challenge you face sounds like more political/strategic than technical though. Either SEO has actual/potential value to your business or it doesn't. If content producers aren't versed in SEO or focused on maintaining it or producing optimised pages and content then you probably have an uphill battle ahead of you to get them to focus on it.
Good luck,
George

Hi Caitlin,
Unfortunately, the site is structured in a way that anytime there is a change to a product version or name, a new path is created in our CMS (which is an old system called Vignette) and a new URL is created and the other is broken. Because there are 100s of these happening with each new product release, I get resistance from the web developers on my redirect requests. One reason being they'd have to do this manually each time, the other being site performance concerns. I had to really push to get the / vs non-trailing slash versions of the higher ranking pages on our site redirected and that wasn't nearly as many pages as this library.
I know my question is pretty broad. I'm just curious if someone out there has experienced similar issues and how they made the case that it needs to be fixed? Or if redirects is the only answer, will that many redirects negatively affect performance? Because we are moving to a new CMS where hopefully this won't be as big of an issue, is it best to take the hit now? As we migrate, all those links will eventually be broken. And trying to make the case to redirect 40,000 URLs might be even harder.
Because these are low-ranking pages, should I suggest removing this library from the website's root domain?

Hello!
Unfortunately it is difficult to give you a concrete answer without an understanding of your CMS and website structure. However, one thing did stand out to me. You mentioned above that you receive 100s of 404s every few months. Is there any reason why you are not implementing 301 redirects for these? When a 301 redirect is set up if a user where to try to navigate to a page that 404s they would be automatically redirected to another closely related page instead.

Product Code Error in Volusion
I started working with about 800+ 404 errors in September after we migrated our site to Volusion 13. There is a recurring 404 error that I can't trace inside of our source code or in our Sitemap. I don't know what is causing this error so I have no way of knowing how to fix it. Tech support at Volusion has been less than helpful so any feed back would be appreciated. | http://www.apelectric.com/Generac-6438-Guardian-Series-11kW-p/{1} | The error is seemingly starting with the product code. The addendum at the end of the URL "p/" should be followed by the product code. In this example, 6438. Instead, the code is being automatically populated with %7B1%7D Has anyone else this issue with Volusion or does this look familiar across any other platform?

Amazon Product Descriptions and our website's product descriptions
I am updating our product descriptions site-wide. I wanted to also update our amazon listings for those same products. Is that considered duplicate content if it would be on amazon and our site? Is there any reason why I wouldn't want to do that? Is google product ads also a problem?

Quantity of products
I have an e-commerce site that sells around 1,500 SKU's.. but there are some huge categories that we really never sell anything in. I'm thinking of deleting a lot of underselling products. When I put it like that of course, you'll probably agree - but I'm hesitant because I have to wonder what Google will think of my site going from (say) 1,000 products and unique URL's to 500.. or lower. Removing that many URL's, products and product categories worries me that we may be viewed as a smaller store and have a negative impact. What effect would you expect from removing a lot of products? Who has done this?

Old documents online as link juice
Each month I upload my auction catalog in different formats (word, pdf and rtf). I have about 9 years of catalogues online that have all been indexed by Google. In each catalog there is a link to my terms and conditions page (which has made the page authority for that page quite high in some unusual, but desired keywords), there is also many, many mentions of non-desired keywords in each of those documents and links to my domain. Is it worth updating all these old, previously indexed catalogues with better keyword juice and more relevant links ? Would they even get re-visited by google ? I suppose that leads to the next question... is it worth adding each of these pages to my sitemap ? To this point I have only added my major pages, not any of the subordinate pages etc.

Product Duplicate Content Issue with Google Shopping
I have a site with approx 20,000 products. These products are resold to hundreds of other companies and are fed from one database therefore the content is duplicated many many times. To overcome this, we are launching the site with noindex meta tags on all product pages. (In phase 2 we will begin adding unique content for every product eek) However, we still want them to appear in Google Shopping. Will this happen or will it have to wait until we remove the noindex tags?

Canonical Issues
Hi Guys, I have a technical question. Ive started optimising an ecommerce site for a client and come across some duplicate content issues:- This page: http://www.bracknelllamps.com/projector-manufacturer/SANYO/70 is actually indexed in Google as:- http://www.bracknelllamps.com/projector-lamps.php?make=SANYO Both pages have the same content and I'm guessing the indexed page refers to an old way of navigating the site. As I'm concerned about duplicate content issues, what's the best approach as this seems to be the case for all 'projector manufacturer' pages. would it be to 301 redirect each manufacturer url (this could take forever with 107) manufacturers or rel="canonical" tag? to show Google which page I want indexing? Kind Regards Neil

301 redirect Issues
my clients site is www.greenbayharvest.co.uk When you enter that URL it redirects to www.greenbayharvest.co.uk/shop, dont ask why, thats the way they set it up and thats what im stuck with. So, how do i resolve the 301 issue here. we want all things to point to www.greenbayharvest.co.uk, in terms of SEO but does the fact that there is a redirect going to /shop make this an issue? we appear to have: www.greenbayharvest.co.uk/shop www.greenbayharvest.co.uk greenbayharvest.co.uk greenbayharvest.co.uk/shop all these URL's go to the same same page so what is the best way to correct this? thanks for any help on this Lee
